Philly Theatre Review: A Wacky "Week That Is"
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The troupe that bills itself as "Philadelphia's all-comedy theatre company" has a new treatment of its annual holiday treat titled "This Is the Week That Is."
This brand-new installment of political satire is written and performed by a collection of talented area artists.
The holiday show has returned for its fifth season -- a look back at local, national, and world events that have made headlines in twelve crowded months. However, there's a lot more here.
There are references in Act I to increased bridge tolls, unemployment, and earthquakes, although there's an emphasis on history and entertainment remarkably captured by an amazing rear-screen projection system.
It remains for the second act to get down to topical matters -- politics and politicians, President Obama and Sarah Palin among them. And witness Jews celebrating Christmas and the mayor of Philadelphia collecting peanuts to market as "Nutter Butter."
There's a wealth of silliness mixed with history and politics. Perhaps a bit too much of the former, especially in the first act.
Even audience members are called upon to lend their talents in the show, a wacky balance of writing and performance.
"This Is The Week That Is," from 1812 Productions, is set to run through December 31st at Plays & Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey Street, in center city Philadelphia.
