Holiday Safety Tips For Your Pets

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Holidays are a busy time with plenty of things to do. But what you don't need is an unexpected trip to your vet's office over the holiday weekend. Here are a few tips to help you avoid just that and to keep your pets healthy, safe and comfortable.

First, remember to keep your pets on their usual daily schedule. Keep their everyday routine as structured as possible to avoid any undue stress. Walk and feed your pet on time to eliminate excess hunger and curtail begging around the holiday table.

Instruct your guests not to offer table scraps as dogs and cats cannot properly digest the food we consume. Ingestion can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea and possibly pancreatitis, which can be severe. Bones can always present a serious choking hazard as well. Many foods such as onions, grapes, garlic, caffeine and alcohol, among others, are extremely toxic to your pets.

Make sure that any containers of leftovers as well as trash bags are kept out of reach as these can become too tempting for a dog when left unsupervised.

And finally, provide a comfortable safe haven in a quiet area for your pets along with their favorite toys, so that they can take refuge if there is extra activity in your home.
