Proposed Gun Business Draws Opposition In Upper Darby

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Residents in an Upper Darby neighborhood are signing petitions, vowing to oppose a plan by a neighbor to run a firearms business from his home in the 700 block of Derwyn Road.

A zoning variance petition submitted by the resident indicates he hopes to "make use of the basement or garage ... to house a home based business of firearms that will perform limited gunsmithing and internet and tradeshow sales for niche market of competition shoot teams."

The neighbor seeking the zoning change was not immediately available to comment or provide additional details. Attempts to contact him by phone, email and at his home were not successful.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says the department supports efforts by neighbors to keep the firearms business off their residential block.

Chitwood says he plans to meet with concerned neighbors Monday and to attend a meeting of the Zoning Board Thursday night, where a decision on the proposal is expected.
