Pa. Family Of 5 Charged With Beating 'Cheating' Husband

BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) -- Five members of one family are behind bars in Bucks County, accused of assaulting a man whom they believe was cheating on his wife.

Bensalem police say the man's wife, her three brothers and father are all charged with robbery, conspiracy, and simple assault, although that could be upgraded to aggravated assault as the investigation continues.

Police say the woman went to a motel on Old Lincoln Highway to confront her husband, and began beating him.

Bensalem public safety director Fred Harran says the man's efforts on his own behalf then went wrong.

"The husband thought it would be a good idea to call her brother, to kind of calm her down," Harran says, "and of course that was the wrong phone call. Not only did the brother show up, but he had a bunch of relatives, and they began to beat him silly."

The husband was also pistol whipped.

Added Harran: "I guess this is a family that took till-death-do-us-part seriously."

Five members of the Awad family of Bensalem were sent to the Bucks County prison in lieu of $75,000 cash bail each.

The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated for serious injuries.
