Vandals Spray Acid On 56 Vehicles In South Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police are searching for vandals who damaged dozens of vehicles by throwing an acid-like substance on them in South Philadelphia.

Residents near 3rd and Wolf Streets woke up to find their vehicles splashed with a corrosive chemical early Tuesday morning.

Police say at least 56 vehicles were vandalized during the incident. The chemical bubbled up the paint on the cars and clumped to windows.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance cameras from businesses in the neighborhood to assist in their search for the culprits.

Neighbors told Eyewitness News that the acid attack is latest act fueling tensions in the neighborhood.

On October 20, Anthony DeMarco, 20, was shot and killed during a robbery on nearby Jackson Street. DeMarco's murder remains unsolved. His funeral was held Tuesday morning on Wolf Street and cars near the shooting scene, church and funeral home were vandalized.

Police say a mobile police unit was placed on Jackson Street after the shooting, but the officer on-duty early Tuesday morning did not see the acid attack.
