New Survey On Gays In The Armed Forces

(CBS) - A new CBS survey is out with a look at the always hot issue of gays in the armed forces.

The survey says that Americans by almost 70 percent feel that gays and lesbians should be allowed to serve in the armed forces. However, only 56 percent feel they should be allowed to serve openly instead of the 'Don't ask, don't tell' policy.

The most interesting aspect of this survey is the broad range of support. The survey says that 44 percent of Republicans, 65 percent of Democrats and 55 percent of Independents are all for it.

This is a dramatic departure of polls back in the 80's which showed a majority opposed to the service of gays in the fighting forces.
