BLOG: Eagles Tackle Breast Cancer

By Steve Trevelise

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and as you've probably seen by all the pink at the games, the NFL is doing everything possible to make us aware.

We became aware in my family when my wife, Deneen, had a post partum checkup after giving birth to our sons, Lennon and Albert, and they found a lump in her left breast.

This was followed by eight weeks of chemotherapy where she lost all of her hair, 16 weeks of radiation where she lost a lot of weight and energy and a drug called tomoxophen, which she still takes for two more years, all while raising new born twin boys. Did I mention she also works as a physical therapist?

There is so much more to this disease than pink ribbons. It robs you of so much while it scares you with the possibility that it could take more.

I applaud the NFL for taking it on and I applaud the Eagles for being the first to do so with their Eagles Tackle Breast Cancer program. As a man, you feel so helpless watching this happen to someone you love and want to protect.

People always ask, "Is there anything I can do?" The only thing we really can do is give the people who can find a cure the money they need to do so. The Eagles make it easy, and the NFL has caught on. Bravo!
