Mayor Nutter Urges Residents To Use City Parks

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The new Parks and Recreation Department has been busy restoring Philadelphia's parks over the past few years, and at an event on Saturday, Mayor Nutter told residents it's time to start using them.

Years of neglect and crime scared many people away from city parks like Cobbs Creek in West Philadelphia, but Mayor Nutter says time are changing thanks to lots of hard work:

"This is a fantastic area of the city. The city recently merged its park and recreation systems and we're giving them a highlight today -- with young people out, with those who are young at heart -- and just demonstrating some of the beauty of what we have here."

Parks employees gave visitors a guided tour of a new nature trail at Cobbs Creek for walking or biking.

Philadelphia has more than 9,400 acres of parks both big and small. Nutter says the onus is on everyone to keep these assets safe, clean, and enjoyable for generations to come.
