2-Year-Old Killed In Bella Vista Hit-Run

PHILADELPHIA (CBS3/KYW 1060) - Philadelphia police are searching for a car involved in a hit and run accident that claimed the life of a 2-year-old child Saturday evening.

According to police, a woman and her young child were struck by a silver colored Mercedes Benz near the intersection of 6th and Washington Avenues in the city's Bella Vista section.

Witnesses say the 20-year-old woman was holding her 2-year-old son's hand as they crossed the street near 6th and Washington Avenue. Police say that's when a car came around the corner and struck them.

One witness told police he saw the car's brake lights come on, but then the car sped up and turned onto another street. Police say the woman was returning from a trip to the grocery store when the hit and run happened.

There is no word on the condition of the mother who was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The 2-year-old was initially taken to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in extremely critical condition; he later died of his injuries.

The identity of the victims has not yet been released.

Police believe the vehicle is a newer model with tinted windows and is expected to have sustained substantial front end damage.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Philadelphia Police Department.
