You'll Dig the Fruits and Veggies You Can Grow

by KYW's Phran Novelli

Well, look at that -- baby watermelons!

It's amazing what you can grow in a tiny backyard garden. These are all the more surprising since they're growing in less than full sun, in rocky suburban soil that includes a ground-out tree stump mixed with bagged topsoil. Through this droughty summer, although it wasn't ignored, this garden wasn't heavily watered either. Yet, there they are - two baby watermelons growing on quite a healthy plant. They're next to a few peppers, alongside some struggling tomatoes, and even a row each of fennel and Swiss chard that managed to grow from seeds sprinkled there.

With even more attention and watering and fertilizing and mulching, there might have even been a bumper crop of it all – including who knows how many melons. But how many watermelons can you eat, anyway? The point is, you don't have to do very much to grow all kinds of fun and tasty stuff in your own yard. Even a watermelon or two.
