Rafiqa Abdul Rasheed is a social gerontologist who is the leader of the Jewels of Islam, an organization of women over the age of 50.

The 80 or so women meet once a month to talk about issues of aging, health care, and religion.

“The sisters really find it uplifting to be together and to have a program like that where they can dialogue with each other.”

Rasheed has been called an encouragement and an inspiration.

“Older people really need housing, and especially we’re finding that our Muslim population is in need of this.  So that is a goal that we’re trying to work on at present.”
