Convicted Cop Killer Tries to Make a Deal

The penalty hearing for two convicted Philadelphia cop killers was delayed this morning by several developments including an eleventh-hour attempt at a plea deal by one of the defendants.

KYW's Tony Hanson reports that prosecutors, who are seeking the death penalty (see previous story), quickly rejected a possible deal for defendant Levon Warner, who sought a life term in exchange for dropping any future appeals.

Warner and co-defendant Eric Floyd were convicted last week of the first-degree murder of Philadelphia police sergeant Stephen Liczbinski (see previous story), setting the stage for today's death penalty hearing.

And Floyd, who has been watching the trial on television in a cell adjoining the courtroom since he punched his attorney during jury selection (see related story), has told the court he does not want to be in court during the penalty phase. He has not indicated whether he wants to address the jury.
