A West Chester, Pa. family is grieving the loss of their son, a high school senior who died tragically during a family vacation in California.
KYW’s Michelle Durham reports that 17-year-old Andrew Hicks was killed in a fall Monday afternoon while on a hike with family members at Muir Beach, near the Golden Gate Bridge.
West Chester Area School District spokesman Rob Partridge says the family told him that Andrew and his younger brother Kyle had moved ahead when the accident occurred:
“Looking down the ledge, he didn’t feel comfortable standing, so he actually began to sit down. And as he sat and had his hands on the ground, he lost his balance and slipped off that side.”

Partridge says Kyle ran back to his parents for help and the father made his way down to where Andrew had fallen, but it was too late.
“This seems to be a young man who had a very level head. He was a National Honor Society student, played varsity ice hockey and soccer for B. Reed Henderson High School. He was being cautious, but you can’t always control the circumstances and the environment.”
The school district has arranged for grief counseling for anyone who needs it and will post memorial service information on their web site, www.wcasd.net.
