Last week it was lacrosse, this week it’s hockey; naturally, you’re a bit worried about laying out big bucks when next week’s fancy might be fencing. Save time, money and aggravation by outfitting your future Olympian in pre-owned athletic gear. These are some of the best of the best when it comes to used sporting goods stores in the Philadelphia area.
Liberty Bell Bicycles
7741 Frankford Ave.
Price: $75 to $150 for used bikes
Put the pedal to the metal and head on down to one of Liberty Bell Bicycles’ two Philadelphia locations for pre-owned bikes. In addition to selling new items, the two shops are full of brand-name, recycled, kid and adult road and mountain bikes. They even stock a handful of classics, including banana-seat bikes! If used is not your thing, trade in your old wheels toward the purchase of a spanking new Subrosa, Schwinn, Haro, Kink or CT two-wheeler.
Play It Again Sports
1004 Lancaster Ave.
Berwyn, PA 19312
Located just 30 minutes from Philadelphia, Play It Again Sports features new and quality pre-owned athletic equipment for just about every sport imaginable. It offers great deals on starter packages for your beginner lacrosse player, too. Open daily, the shop boasts a huge selection of recycled in-line skates, baseball bats, football cleats and skateboards. When your Pele progeny has outgrown her gear, trade it in for an upgrade or opt for cash on the spot.
Sunrise Surf and Skateboard Shop
259 Marlton Pike East
Cherry HIll, NJ 08034
Surfers will be stoked to find a large selection of used surfboards at Sunrise Surf Shop. Situated less than 10 miles from Center City, the store also carries new boards, wetsuits, apparel and a ton of other surfing gear. It’s got a great rep for repairing dings and cracks in your old board and refurbishing vintage models. On Sundays and Mondays, the sales dudes hang 10, but they’re open the rest of the week.
1004 Ridge Pike
Conshohocken, PA 19428
Free up your finances and get fit at the same time with pre-owned exercise equipment at Fitness Exchange. This warehouse full of reconditioned elliptical trainers, treadmills and steppers is located in Conshohocken, just a 20-minute drive from downtown Philadelphia. Gyms and private individuals can upgrade here to get their refurbished gear at discounts of 50 to 70 percent off retail prices. Small items such as barbells and free weights are stocked, and the big stuff is even delivered and set up in your home.
Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation
3601 S. Broad St.
Philadelphia, PA 19148
Hockey equipment does not come cheap, so if you’re struggling, contact Ed Snider’s Youth Hockey Foundation. While it’s a charity organization and not a store, the foundation aims to provide Philadelphia and Camden inner-city youth with the skills, coaching, ice time and the equipment necessary to play the otherwise expensive sport of ice hockey. After school, weekend, school day and girls programs are offered at no-cost to the student. Community members may help by donating time, cash or used equipment. College students may even apply for a hockey operations, development or finance internship to help keep the free gear flowing.
