Eastern State Penitentiary was in operation from 1829 to 1971. The penitentiary was a state-of-the-art facility as a solitary confinement institution. The penitentiary's principles were based on reforming the inmates as opposed to punishment. The prison is a U.S National Historic Landmark and is located in the Fairmount neighborhood of Philadelphia. Celebrate Franklin Square's 10th birthday this Spring with the first ever Philadelphia Chinese Lantern Festival. It's the perfect first-time date for many reasons. Enjoy the celebration of light and culture with over 25 giant light displays including flowers, a three-story pagoda, and a 200-foot dragon to name a few. The experience is sure to be colorful and bright and the perfect way to welcome Spring. The show will run daily from six to 10 p.m and every Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m.
