Top Chicken Fried Steak In Philadelphia

Philadelphia is known for its cheese steaks and soft pretzels, but it is gaining a reputation for chicken fried steak. This tradition of the south is beginning to make its delicious taste known in the City of Brotherly Love. Delectably referred to as the London Broil of the South, chicken fried steak is a mouth-watering meal for breakfast, lunch or dinner and has everything to do with steak and little to do with chicken.

Ever since co-owner Jeb Woody stepped off a Greyhound bus in Philadelphia in 2000, he craved a staple of his childhood. Tired of freezer-to-fryer imitations, he embarked on a mission to bring real Southern chicken fried steak to Philadelphia. After meeting Ellen Mogell, a veteran of the Philly restaurant scene, the couple fell in love, opened a place a few blocks from where they lived and the rest they say is culinary history. Jeb says he only uses flour, salt, pepper, egg and steak to serve up his pancake-sized delicacy of the south.

Don't judge an eatery by its name. Because if you do, you are likely to miss out on classic menu items like homemade meatloaf or chicken croquettes. But it is the chicken friend steak that is a must-have when you sit down in a booth or a table at the Trolley Car Diner. You will have to look long and hard, but you will find it on page eight of their menu. Fresh hand pounded sirloin steak is dipped in seasoned flour, fried golden brown and topped with sage sausage gravy, then completed with mashed potatoes and choice of vegetables.
