Top Brew-Pubs In Philadelphia

Breweries and brewpubs have been springing up all over Philadelphia and Pennsylvania the past few years. In fact, there are more than 100 breweries in the state alone. A brewpub typically makes its own beer on site while also offering a selection of food that pairs perfectly with its house-made brew. See below for some of the top brewpubs in Philadelphia.

The newest brewpub on this list, Bar Hygge, opened its doors early this year in Spring Garden. The pub, pronounced "huu-guh," features cozy furniture and booths, house-made brew and an American menu full of waffle wings, salads, and meals like quinoa veggie sliders and seared scallops. Its main food attraction, however, its Hygge boards, which you can design yourself by selecting your own meat, vegetables, and cheese. The beer made on site is unique and is sure to satisfy all pallets, but Bar Hygge also serves creative cocktails and wine.

Crime & Punishment is located in the Brewerytown section of Philadelphia. Opened last year, Crime & Punishment serves unique beers and Russian-influenced fare. Sip interestingly named brews, such as the Indecent Exposure or Bad Haircut, as you dine on Russian literature inspired snacks and meals like housemade dumplings, pickle and cheese plates, and kielbasa sandwiches. Crime & Punishment hosts First Friday evenings of music, art and beer, as well as fundraisers and other events.

Dock Street is Philadelphia's first brewpub having opened in 1985. Today, it's located in a converted firehouse in West Philadelphia in which 1/3 is dedicated to its semi-production brewery and the rest to its restaurant. The kitchen serves wood-fired pizza, char-grilled burgers, salads, wraps and small bites such as fries. The brewpub has six rotating beers on tap and one in cask featuring popular classics like the Rye IPA, as well as seasonal brews. Dock Street Brewery features musical guests, artists, parties, and charity events throughout the year including the rare beer for school supplies where you bring $10 worth of school supplies every third Wednesday of the month and receive a 70 oz. pour of a rare beer as a thank you.

At 2nd Story Brewing Company in Old City, you can witness the beer being brewed for yourself on the second floor while you enjoy a draft or bite. 2nd Story features five rotating drafts brewed on site including a Vienna lager, Fritzie's Lager, and a Munich Helles, Root Cellar Helles. For food, 2nd Story Brewing serves lunch, dinner, and small bites including an adult grilled cheese (with apples, cheeses, and bacon), burgers, pizzas, and healthy soup and salads.

Tired Hands Brewing Company is located in Ardmore and has two locations within two blocks of each other, both of which are a brewery and restaurant. The Brew Café sources all of its food locally and makes its bread in-house. Here, you'll be able to enjoy sandwiches, cheese and charcuterie plates and pickles. Fermentaria is located in an old trolley repair shop and has a more eclectic menu of grilled octopus, beet-cured salmon, tacos, and burgers. The pub can seat 180 people and has 12 beers on tap, all brewed on site. Both restaurants offer specials including taco Mondays and 50% off pints HopHands and SaisonHands during happy hour.
