Top Abstract Art Exhibits In Philadelphia

Abstract art tells a story with the use of colors and imagery which is a departure from what is thought of as reality. Many abstract artists use shapes and geometrical patterns to express a feeling or subject which in turn may lead to a wider variety of interpretations. Some famous Abstract artists are Jackson Pollack and Philadelphian studied Frank Kline. You can find their work or work that is influenced by them in Philly as well as much more which is unique and inspiring in its own right. Here are the top five places to view and or purchase abstract art in Philly.

The Museum of Art is one of the best places to visit for a wide variety of art. The museum is sprawling and has tours, different types of performances and traveling exhibits on a regular basis. Here, you can view Jackson Pollock's "Male and Female." The museum also has on display Arthur Garfield Dove paintings and sculptures by Constantin Brancusi (Bird in Space and Newborn). On Wednesday nights from 5 - 8:45 p.m., the Art Museum offers its guests to pay what you wish for those who are on tighter budgets.

The Off the wall Gallery is a more unusual choice to view art, but is a well-liked place for its accessibility and that it's part of a bar; Dirty Frank's dates back to prohibition days. The works of local artists are shown regularly in the gallery, and different events happen throughout the year. Abstract work from artist's such as Erica Harney, Cynthia Harvey and Lois Schlachter are showing their pieces here. The museum is free and the cash-only bar has popular beers such as Black & Tan, Blue Moon to Yuengling on tap.

At Absolute Abstract, you can find all the abstract art your eyes can handle in their gallery. Besides being able to view what the gallery has to show, you can purchase many items such as prints on tin, posters and what is referred to as "Art Wood Blocks" for decorative purposes. All of their products are made in the USA and use repurposed wood. Absolute Abstracted has been opening eyes since 2006 and has free admission.

The Paradigm Gallery and Studio showcases visual and performing arts. Many local artists are welcome and showcased here including the abstract work by Hanna Stouffer and Hilary white "Ingress- Egress." This Gallery is also notable as a PHL 17 "Hot list winner" for 2014 for "Best Art Gallery."

This gallery was established in 1978 as an artist's cooperative. They feature abstract art as well as conceptual and representational forms. The Gallery is fairly small without an overabundance of décor to distract you from the art itself. Due to the nature of it being an Artist's Cooperative, the work regularly changes so you never know what you will see. Some abstract artists work shown here includes Deann Mills, Diane Lachman and Raywood.
