Q: Hi Tim. Welcome to Defend Your Ride Philly. Where did you get your car from?
A: I got this car by trading in my old 2003 Toyota Corolla, and taking advantage of a huge discount I got from being part of the 2010 Fiesta Movement Chapter 2, a social media ambassador program.
Q: Where did you buy it?
A: I bought my car at Garnet Ford in Chadds Ford, just south of West Chester. The experience was decent. Because I had driven a prototype U.S. version of the European Fiesta for four months through the Fiesta Movement, I had every option picked out and all my questions answered beforehand.
Q: What do you primarily use your car for?
A: I use my car to commute 35-ish miles each way—70 miles daily—between Northern Liberties and West Chester where I work.
Q: What’s your favorite or least favorite part of your commute?
A: My favorite part of the commute is traveling in the opposite direction of the bulk of rush hour traffic. It results in a smooth quiet ride with predictable results. My least favorite part of commuting such a distance is losing two hours every weekday by being in transit.
Q: Do you drive on the weekends?
A: On weekends, I use the car to visit my fiancée in North Jersey. She’s almost exactly 100 miles away.
Q: Aside from visiting your fiancée, what’s your favorite day trip from home?
A: Sometimes I drive to Brooklyn to spend the day with some family at my aunt’s restaurant, Purple Yam. Aside from that, I’ll sometimes drive to Fort Lee, New Jersey with my fiancée to Mitsuwa, a gigantic Asian food store and mall. When it comes to groceries from there or elsewhere, I’m glad I have this convenient hatchback.
Q: What do you listen to in your car?
A: I typically have my iPhone connected to my car wirelessly via Bluetooth for phone calls. Naturally I use the iPod capability of my phone—all other times—as my car’s default playlist.
Q: What kind of music do you listen to?
A: It varies depending on mood, but anything from The National, Bon Iver, Mumford & Sons, Fang Island, The Wombats, Daft Punk, Simian Mobile Disco, Diego Bernal, Beastie Boys, Chiddy Bang, Kanye West, Bruno Mars, or Cee Lo, to everything in-between.
Q: Is there anything else we should know about your car?
A: My car’s LED interior lighting is reminiscent of the effects in the movie TRON. This may or may not have been a factor in my decision to purchase one. A car or a bicyclist must have clipped my side mirror the week I got the car. That’s why it’s broken. The turn indicator still works though. Lastly, I love the capless fuel port.
