Located in the Old City section of Philadelphia, Northern Liberties’ political history stretches back to 1771, when the area became an official township. At one time, it was home to one of the most famous red-light districts in the country. The Northern Liberties Historic District was formed in 1985 to protect its collection of Greek revival-, Italianate- and Federal-style architectural buildings. Now home to young professionals, artists, students and others, the neighborhood also offers a number of bars and restaurants that are beloved nightlife spots.
