Tale Of The Tape: Kansas City Chiefs At Philadelphia Eagles
|Much will be made of Andy Reid’s return to Philadelphia, but the former Eagles coach will not be playing. It will be on his players and no one will have more to do with the outcome than Alex Smith. He has the size, arm strength and accuracy to get the best of the Eagles secondary and should have the opportunity to pick apart Philadelphia’s secondary.||Quarterback||The Eagles’ fast-paced offensive attack is based on conditioning and sound football principles. Chip Kelly believes he has the right triggerman for his team in the explosive Michael Vick. With his ability to run for big yards and throw the ball with velocity, Vick has the ability to string touchdowns together and build a big lead for his team.|
|Smith needs significant help from his running game if he is going to be a consistent quarterback. Jamaal Charles has explosive qualities that will keep a defense honest. Charles has gamebreaking speed, but he needs time from his line to make one cut before zipping upfield. Dwayne Bowe is talented, but he will not always play with the effort needed.||Offense||The Eagles have had excellent skill position players in LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson for years and both are gamebreakers. McCoy appears reborn in Kelly’s offense because of his ability as a runner and a receiver. Jackson has rare speed and only the best defensive backs have a chance to stay with him. The offensive line must play with toughness every week, which was an issue in the past.|
|The Chiefs have a chance to be a much better team than they were a year ago because their defense appears quite dependable. Nose tackle Dontari Powe is underrated and can stop the interior run and collapse the pocket. Outside linebacker Justin Houston had a monster game in Week One with 3.0 sacks. Inside backer Derrick Johnson is a hard hitter who sets a tone for the defense.||Defense||The Eagles will try to use their speed and quickness on defense to play havoc with the opponents’ attack. Outside linebacker Trent Cole has some explosive qualities when he rushes the passer. Inside linebacker DeMeco Ryans is a smart leader and a dependable tackler. The secondary appears to be ordinary and could have a problem with Bowe.|
|Ryan Succop was one of the more dependable Chiefs in 2012 and Reid believes he can be a solid FG kicker again this year. Dustin Colquitt may not have the strongest leg, but he can place the ball accurately and that gives the Chiefs a leg up in kick coverage. Dexter McCluster is elusive and explosive and the Chiefs expect a lot out of him.||Special Teams||Alex Henery is a good but not great placekicker. He tends to be streaky and that could wear on Kelly as the year progresses. Donnie Jones does not have a big leg as a punter, but he gets excellent height on his kicks. Jackson can be a gamebreaker as a punt returner.|
We'll just call it a tie
