Twelve years ago at 826 Valencia Street in San Francisco, a single writing center opened. Now, 826 National reaches 30,000 students, mostly from underserved communities.
The Library of Congress has just honored 826 DC with its first-ever Literacy Award, recognizing organizations working to address illiteracy in America.
Brett and Clint Matter, “gave back to a sport and city that gave them so much.” Donating mats and uniforms, they began a non-profit organization, Beat the Streets, combining wrestling with tutoring and mentoring. Today there are more than 900 kids participating in the program.
