Despite a 16-5 record, and a perfect 14-0 mark in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, the Division II Lady Rams have not had anyone selected as the conference’s player of the week this season. That’s not so much a slight as it is the fact that it’s really, really hard to pick just one player that makes this team go.
It is not unusual for Division II college basketball teams to step up in exhibition games and take on Division I programs. The local scene has seen several area squads do just that over the last week, on both the men’s and women’s side.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a women’s basketball player having a better first season than Philadelphia University redshirt freshman center Tori Arnao.
Christine Wooding is averaging a double-double for the Lady Rams, leading the squad in scoring (17.5 ppg) and rebounding (11.5 per contest).
Lady Rams head coach Tom Shirley earned his 600th career coaching win, 76-60, over Chestnut Hill.
With one more victory, the Philadelphia University coaching duo of Herb Magee and women’s coach Tom Shirley will hit 1500 as a pair. Only Jim Calhoun and Geno Auriemma at Connecticut have a higher total as an active coaching tandem.
