The Villanova Wildcats sit at 23-3 this season (11-2 in the Big East) and they are now ranked ninth in the country as they get ready to welcome St. John’s to the Center on Saturday afternoon.
Sir’Dominic Pointer raced down the court and hit a jumper from the corner at the buzzer to lead St. John’s to a 63-61 come-from-behind win over Saint Joseph’s in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night.
The death of the Big East as we know it hit home last week as 14 teams arrived at the World’s Most Famous Arena (Connecticut was ineligible). Next season, the “Catholic 7” will be reportedly joined by Butler, Creighton, and Xavier in a basketball-only conference that has paid to keep the Big East name.
The Hawks (18-13) will be a No. 4 seed and they will take on St. John’s (NY) Tuesday night.
The Big East tournament will have a touch of a wake to it this week. When games end, there will be plenty of reminiscing about rivalries and talk of what is to come.
Ryan Arcidiacono scored 32 points and JayVaughn Pinkston had 26 to lead Villanova to 98-86 overtime win over St. John’s on Wednesday night.
