Outlook Good For City Cigarette Tax As Lawmakers Return

Pension reform and liquor privatization are longshots, but as lawmakers return to the state capitol today, one thing that may get done is a cigarette tax in Philadelphia to generate badly needed cash for city schools.

Fate Of Philadelphia’s School Year Hangs In Balance

This is the do-or-die week for Philadelphia public schools. By Friday, the superintendent has to decide whether to lay-off hundreds of teachers, which could delay the start of the school year.

House Republican leaders Tuesday night thwarted an 11th hour effort by Philadelphia Democrats to get committee approval for a Philadelphia school funding proposal.
