More than a dozen areas in the United States have been shaken in recent years by small earthquakes triggered by oil and gas drilling, a government report released Thursday found.
New Jersey legislators are working on a measure to express their displeasure over plans by the Obama Administration to allow for oil and natural gas drilling off the Atlantic Coast.
“These state lands are intended to be refuges, places where people can go to enjoy natural beauty,” the governor said today, signing the measure in 275-acre Benjamin Rush State Park, in Northeast Philadelphia.
Legislation imposing a moratorium on gas and oil drilling in Bucks and Montgomery Counties was included in budget legislation approved over the weekend, touching off a firestorm of controversy.
Former Pennsylvania governor and industry consultant Tom Ridge says many of the concerns about the environmental and public health impacts of drilling are “phony hysteria.”
