Nuclear Power Plant
Though the odds are extremely remote, Pennsylvania nuclear reactors, including those near Lancaster and Beaver Creek, could be vulnerable to radiation leaks if their power were knocked out for days, an Associated Press investigation has found.
In just the last four days, Montgomery County officials have handed out more than double the number of potassium iodide pills that they handed out in all of last year.
“Radiation affects most of the cells that are reproducing rapidly — your gastrointestinal tract, your bone marrow cell. Another effect is on our genetic make-up, birth defects,” Dr. Curtis Miyamoto explains.
The Limerick nuclear power plant in Montgomery County will get a closer look from government regulators to see whether it’s at risk from seismic activity.
