The Philadelphia immigrant community will be watching and waiting in anticipation of President Obama’s decision.
“The goal is to make President Obama act,” said Peter Pedemonti, executive director of the New Sanctuary Movement.
Mayor Michael Nutter signed an executive order today that changes Philadelphia’s policy on immigration and customs enforcement detainers, known as ICE holds. Immigration advocates are calling the new policy is one of the most progressive in the country.
Now, when Philadelphia police stop an undocumented immigrant for even a minor offense, officers will enter the person’s information into a database shared with federal immigration authorities.
Dozens of immigration advocates braved the cold and rain Tuesday to hold an UN-Thanksgiving Day dinner to demand that President Obama immediately stop deportations of undocumented immigrants.
At a press conference in center city, their message was that immigration is not just a legal and economic issue, but a moral one.
