Vice president Joe Biden is helping celebrate Independence Day in the nation’s birthplace.
Biden will join Mayor Nutter and others on Thursday morning in front of Independence Hall for the 2014 edition of the “Celebration of Freedom” ceremony.
The head of a local organization focused on improving campus security is pleased that the issue is getting a spotlight from the vice president of the United States.
Nutter was invited by Biden to look at the expansion of the canal, a project that could prove a boost to the Port of Philadelphia.
Biden received an honorary law degree. He joked with Penn president Amy Gutmann, “It’s much cheaper to get a degree this way, isn’t it?”
Hundreds of mourners arrived to pay respects, including Vice President Joe Biden.

An estimated 85,000 volunteers participated in more than 1,300 services projects on Monday as part of the Greater Philadelphia Area Martin Luther King Day of Service.
