Patrick Burns, president and CEO of the Fresh Grocer supermarkets, handed the mock check to Renee Cardwell Hughes, the Red Cross chapter CEO, during a brief ceremony inside the Fresh Grocer store in the 5600 block of Chestnut Street, in West Philadelphia.
“Bebashi” was formed in 1985 to serve the growing number of African-Americans in Philadelphia infected with HIV or AIDS, but it has grown to develop programs serving the area poor.
Fresh Grocer plans to open a 50,000-square-foot supermarket in the Haddon Avenue Transit Village, about a half mile from the Ferry Avenue Patco station.
With over 19,000 infected people in the Philadelphia area, the city’s HIV rate is five times the national average and the highest north of Washington DC.
