Guide To Philly Tech Week

Whether you’re a fanatic or merely a fledgling, you can always afford to brush up on your knowledge of technology. Get your crash course in all things innovative at the second annual Philly Tech Week, coming to our city this April. –Chelsea Karnash

What: The fourth Philly Tech Week, organized by tech news site Technically Philly, is a series of events held at various locations. Last year, Tech Week hosted more than 100 technology-related events across the city, including seminars, workshops and happy hours.

When: April 4-12, 2014

Why: Philly Tech Week’s goal is to celebrate and grow technological innovations in the Philadelphia area.

Schedule of Events: Philly Tech Week has a variety of events planned in different genres, including a massive game of Tetris that will be played on the Cira Centre and “Track Days,” or one day conferences on different topics.

Saturday, Apr. 5

PhillyCHI 8th Annual Design Slam
The DEC Center
401 Henry Ave
11 – 4 p.m.

Challenge yourself at this “design slam,” which pits teams of competitors tasked with solving a problem via tech against each other. The event is a chance for students of all levels to work alongside pros in the tech industry. Spectators are welcome, and a panel of judges will choose the winning design.

Arcade @ The Oval
Eakins Oval and the Ben Franklin Parkway
7 – 10:30 p.m.

Celebrate the start of Tech Week and the return of The Oval, an eight-acre activity hub at the foot of the Art Museum. Games, food trucks, a Yards beer garden and live performances are all on the roster, but the absolute coolest part of this event? Gamers can try their hand at Tetris on the Cira Centre building, which has been Guinness-certified as the tallest video game in the world!

Sunday, Apr. 6

Cira Centre Pregame: Arduino Controller Workshop
2025 Washington Ave
12 – 3:30 p.m.

Learn to build and program your own game controller, which you’ll then use to play games on a mini Cira Centre replica. Tours of the NextFab facility, light snacks, drinks and a demo will follow. Bonus: The controller is yours to keep, and will work with any PC for basic games as a replacement for the keyboard!

Monday, Apr. 7

Tech Mix It Up: A Diversity Networking Affair
William Way Community Center
1315 Spruce St
5 – 8 p.m.

Spend happy hour at this diversity networking event, where you can meet like-minded techies of every race, gender and ethnicity, as well as members of the LGBT and special needs community. The event includes food from restaurants such as Cedar Point and Khyber Pass as well as drinks, games and prizes.

Tuesday, Apr. 8

Femme and Fortune Presents “From Passion to Business”
The Shops at Liberty Place
1625 Chestnut St
5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Three local female entrepreneurs will discuss their successes and struggles within the tech industry at this professional development event for women. And get your questions ready for the ladies, as there will be a spirited Q&A session, too.

Take a trip down memory lane at this gaming event, where you’ll get to show off your skills on some seriously old-school games.

Wednesday, Apr. 9

#Failfest: A Conversation in Failure

It’s no secret: Sometimes, startups fail. Hear from some of the region’s most successful tech honchos about a topic you might think is foreign to them: failure.

Whether you’re just interested, have an idea or already work for a startup, this is the event you’ll want to be at to meet and mingle with some of the best in the industry.

This intensive, all-day strategy conference brings together the industry’s leading minds and is centered on a single, trending topic. Only the hardcore need apply.

Friday, Apr. 11

N3RD Street BBQ

2 – 6 p.m.

The road known to those in-the-know as N3RD Street is officially adopting its nickname. Celebrate with a BBQ in the area’s Liberty Lands Park.

Philly Tech Week Signature Event Presented by AT&T

7 – 10 p.m.

This cocktail party-cum-tech expo takes place in the city’s (current) tallest building and includes a mix of regular peeps as well as Tech Week organizers, sponsors and participants.

Saturday, Apr. 12

Philly Women in Tech Summit

9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Women in tech, unite! This all-day conference features speakers and discussion groups, hands-on workshops and more, all geared towards helping us succeed in the field.
