PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Tis the season for Achilles tendon injuries. A local orthopedic expert says, especially in the spring months, this injury is more common than you think.

“The major reason for Achilles tendon rupture is tightness in the Achilles tendon,” Dr. Steven Raikin is Director of Foot and Ankle at the Rothman Institute. “Somebody has got this tight rubber band that they suddenly go and push-off on playing basketball or softball. As they start running, the Achilles tendon has a tendency to rupture. The prevention is stretching.”

Part of the reason for the tightness is many folks have spent the majority of the winter in front of the TV and not exercising.

“We see Achilles tendon ruptures throughout the year. Unquestionably, they’re most common in the spring. And it’s not so much eating donuts through the winter and it is not doing stretching.”

He suggests, “Stretching should be done two to three times minimum every day. If you have a tendency to tightness or have had Achilles tendon problems in the past then you should do them four to five times a day. And it’s just five minutes of stretching — a good wall stretch,” which is different than the more dynamic stretching lunges you may do before aerobics or a run.

When it comes to visiting Walt Disney World, you could say that Tanya McNally has been there, done that! She says, “I actually stopped counting at around a hundred, but I’ve been coming to Disney World since I was a tiny tot.”

Tanya now shares that wealth of knowledge as part of the Walt Disney World Moms panel, an interactive online forum where Magic Kingdom bound travelers can submit questions as they plan trips to visit Walt Disney World.

Tanya says the questions run the gamut. Like, where’s the best place to see Mickey? Where should I have a character meal? Or what special events are taking place during the week that I’m traveling? She says,
“One of us will answer the question and give them the best possible advice we can.”

The Moms Panel consists of over 40 moms and dads from across the United States and even some from the United Kingdom. Many in fact have specific areas of expertise. According to Tanya, “We have a Walt Disney World cruise mom, we have a Run Disney mom for sports enthusiasts that are interesting in running. And I have a child who has some special needs so I love to answer questions for guests who have special needs children to help their planning and make their vacations extra magical.”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police are looking for the gunman in a shooting that left one man dead and his father, a corrections officer, wounded (see related story).

The son, 30, was shot in the chest and later died at Temple University Hospital. His 50-year-old father suffered a wrist wound.

The incident happened around 11 p.m. near Adams Avenue and Wingohocking Street.

Police say the gunman appeared to flee on foot.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Stock prices have been volatile enough without worrying whether someone is making markets wobble or decline on purpose. But, that’s just what a veteran stock portfolio developer says is happening.

Kevin Freeman has been creating stock portfolios for 20-plus years and he’s no big fan of government regulation. But, he says certain high-risk tactics like credit-default swaps have to be reined in.

“Most recently, with the JPMorgan debacle, people say, ‘wow, if they could blow themselves up with this, could somebody else use this as a weapon against us?’ And the answer is absolutely yes.”

Freeman says, in the wake of the 2008 market collapse, he was asked by the Pentagon to look for economic warfare in its causes. Freeman, CEO of Freeman Global Holdings and author of Secret Weapon, says there were plenty of fingerprints: Russians, Chinese, Islamists, finding ways to use our own lack of trading regulations against us.

“We’re playing with fire, whether it’s naked short-selling, credit default swaps, dark pools, high frequency trading — these can be mistakes that we do ourselves and self-inflicted wounds, but they are also weapons that can be used against us.”

Freeman says, for example, the Chinese have a tremendous hold on us, with all the debt they buy.  Even the threat of stopping would send US markets into a tizzy.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) – Governor Corbett believes Pennsylvania school districts could tap into their reserve funds more deeply instead of cutting programs.

During a recent appearance with WPHT’s Dom Giordano, Governor Corbett said if school boards want to cut programs instead of spending more of their financial reserves, blame them — not his budget.

“Well, I look at the reserves as – it’s a rainy day fund. And this is a rainy day – we are in a rainy day.”

Corbett said school district cash reserves are meant for times like now.

“But what do we hear out there? ‘Oh my goodness, because of Governor Corbett’s budget, we’re going to have to get rid of all-day kindergarten, we’re going to have to get rid art and music in the classrooms’. Well, if I look at that school district and I see a substantial reserve – that’s their decision.”

But Jim Buckheit, executive director of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators, says while it may be raining now, school districts are bracing for a massive spike in pension costs that are looming.

“It’ll be a hurricane in another year or two because of the huge pension cost increases.”

Buckheit also says school districts typically set aside money to help pay for construction projects in the works.

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. (CBS) – PennDOT is warning of traffic headaches on the Route 1 State Road Bridge for the next three months.

The message boards are out along the side of the road, warning of major delays, encouraging the estimated 35,000 drivers who use the bridge daily to find an alternate route.

You may not even notice the bridge is there if you drive over it every day, but it runs under a very busy stretch of Route 1.

The bridge is located on Route 1, State Road over Darby Creek, right at the dividing line between Upper Darby and Springfield Townships in Delaware County.

While construction starts today, PennDOT says it will run through August. The crews are working to get the bridge off the structurally deficient list, repairing the bridge deck and painting beams.

During that time, there will be day-long lane closures. Starting today, Route 1 will be reduced to two southbound lanes and one northbound lane.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – More fireworks than ever before will be lighting up the sky in Center City Philadelphia this summer.

Jodie Milkman, with the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, says, “This year we are introducing a free Friday night light fireworks program beginning Friday July 27th and every Friday night through the end of August. We have the Philadelphia Orchestra performing on that first Friday night on July 27th and then we have great smooth jazz summer night concerts every Friday night in August followed by fireworks.”

You can see the Camden Riversharks’ fireworks after games from the Philly side on the Race Street Pier beginning June 1st.

And during the Welcome America festivities there will be two fireworks extravaganzas: one on June 30th along Penn’s Landing, the other on the 4th of July along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

City Representative Melanie Johnson says make your way to the Parkway.

“When you see those fireworks over the Philadelphia Museum of Art, it’s just incredible. It ends a perfect summer evening.”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Avengers continued as a box-office bonanza.

The superheroes thriller finished in first place for a third straight weekend, earning another $55 million, bringing its cumulative total over the $450 million mark.

That put the blockbuster well ahead of all three of the weekend’s new mainstream attractions.

The new military science-fiction thriller, Battleship, was the runner-up with a debut total of $25 million.

The debuting Sacha Baron Cohen comedy, The Dictator, was third with $17 million.

The holdover Dark Shadows took fourth with $13 million.

And the new childbirth comedy, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, claimed fifth place with $11 million.

Overall, despite The Avengers‘ march through the record books, industry-wide totals were slightly below those of a year ago.

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) — Perhaps the most dramatic improvement that shore travelers will see on the way to Ocean City, NJ is the new Route 52 causeway linking Ocean City with Somers Point.

“There used to be huge lines when there was a circle there,” recalls one man.

Now, the Somers Point circle is gone — replaced with a signalized intersection.

And after six years and $400 million worth of construction, the creaky drawbridges have given way to two modern dual-lane spans.

“We are so excited to have a normal traffic pattern in Ocean City,” says Ocean City Chamber of Commerce executive director Michele Gillian (right).  “Also, we won’t have bridges going up and down.  So the flow’s going to be even easier.”

And Gillian expects the causeway bridge will become an attraction on its own, with a new visitors’ center being built mid-span.

“People are going to enjoy just the bridge itself,” she tells KYW Newsradio, “because there’s so many things you can do on it: crabbing, fishing, boating, waterskiing, kayaking.  We’re going to have all those resources right there.”

Gillian says fully 80 percent of Ocean City’s visitors enter by the causeway.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - They are called neural interface systems and they work by translating messages from the brain to robotic devices. Put in simplest terms, neural interface systems take messages from the brain – in people who have been paralyzed – and actually can lead to movement in robotic arms.

The work is described in the journal Nature and although the work has been done in primates and the movement is relatively slight it means that the potential is there.

It has previously been shown that people with long standing paralysis can use the technology to move and click computer cursors and able-bodied monkeys can use the technology to control a robotic arm.

The new research in two humans found neural signals were used to reach and grasp a bottle of coffee, drink from it through a straw, and place it back on the table in four out of six attempts. This was the first time in 14 years that the patient was able to bring any drinking vessel to her mouth and drink from it solely from her own will.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - What’s the worst question you could be asked in a job interview? How about: what’s your Facebook password.

If you’re applying for a job with the Virginia State Police, at the interview you are handed a laptop and asked to sign into Facebook, Twitter, and any other social networking site to which you post content. The interviewer then reviews all of your content. It’s like the virtual equivalent of rooting through your underwear drawer – but is it actually illegal?

The House of Representatives tried to pass legislation making it illegal, but the amendment didn’t pass, so employers can ask to see what they want. They can’t fail to hire you based on illegal criteria that they find there, like any illness you may have, your marital status, religion, or the like, but they can learn a lot about you that they wouldn’t otherwise find out in an interview.

That said, you still have two choices: don’t post anything you wouldn’t want an employer to see, or don’t work in a place that asks for the information.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Barack Obama started at Occidental College in 1979, then transferred to Columbia University, earning his degree in 1983. Mitt Romney began at Stanford in 1965, left for two years and then graduated from Brigham Young University.

Both were not what are called “traditional” students, finishing high school, going straight to college – both are examples of “students who don’t count.” Of those who started in 2009, almost half don’t fit the federal definition of the US Education Department.

National data collection systems count only those who finish where they started in expected time – 4-6 years for a bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years for an associate’s.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Last week a friend asked me to look at a hole she was digging in which to plant a maple tree. The hole was fine, but the tree (from a reputable garden store) was planted way too deeply in its container – I dug down several inches and still couldn’t find the root flare.
What’s a root flare? A properly planted tree looks a lot like the trees we all drew as children – the trunk comes down on each side then flares out with the top roots above the ground.

Trees that look like telephone poles – growing straight out of the ground – are in for trouble. That’s because buried roots can wrap around underground to girdle and completely strangle the tree, first reducing growth and vigor, and eventually killing your tree way before its time.

So, when you go plant shopping, check carefully – if you can’t find a root flare – you don’t want that tree! Once you get it home, don’t plant it too deeply yourself – make sure the root flare is at ground level – and never cover it with mulch – which should be kept several inches away from both the trunk and root flare of your newly-planted tree.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The 76ers have won only one playoff game in Boston since 1982. That win came in Game 2 last Monday night. A repeat performance in Game 5 one week later would put Philadelphia in the driver’s seat in their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Celtics.

“We want to win this series, ” Sixers head coach Doug Collins said during practice on Sunday. “We’re not in this just to compete, we want to win it.”

The Sixers fought their way back from an 18-point deficit in the second half of Game 4 to beat the Celtics, 92-83, knotting the series at two games apiece, and giving themselves a ton of confidence heading back to Boston for Game 5.

“It’s a totally different scenario,” said forward Elton Brand. “Down 3-1 at their crowd, it’s tough. Historically it’s tough. It’s like impossible to come back. A few teams have done it, but it’s tough. But 2-2, we feel good.”

Collins also noted the significance of Friday night’s comeback victory.

“That game gave us a chance to go to Boston and get this back in our favor,” he said. “You lose that game the other night and you’re fighting to stay alive, and now you go in there with the idea can you swing this series back into your favor.”

One thing that would seem to be in Boston’s favor is the two days off between games. While the Sixers are a young, relatively healthy team, the Celtics are an aging group. Kevin Garnett has logged more than 50,000 playing minutes during his basketball career, and Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are clearly not at one-hundred percent.

“They have a lot of veterans on their team that could use the rest,” Brand said. “It’s definitely going to help us, but I think it could help them too.”

The extra rest is certainly beneficial to Brand who’s been battling through a shoulder injury.

“We got a lot of rest (Saturday), a lot of treatment (Sunday),” added Brand. “It was kind of like, you know, just a run practice. It felt good. I’m just trying to get the range of motion back and it seems like it’s coming along.”

Collins admitted the extra rest is probably to Boston’s advantage, but said that’s not where his team’s focus needs to be.

“We’re not facing elimination now,” he said. “We’re facing a Game 5 that gives you a chance to take the lead in this series and come home, so that’s the way we want to approach it.”

Through the first four games of the series, each team has had one turn watching a double-digit, second half lead evaporate and turn into a loss — the 76ers in Game 1 and the Celtics in Game 4. For the Sixers, equally as important as a strong finish, is avoiding a slow start.

“Two of the four games we’ve started out 9-0 and 14-0,” Collins pointed out. “We don’t want to dig ourselves a hole (Monday) night starting that game.”

If they do, the 76ers could find themselves trying to dig out of a 3-2 hole in the series.

“It’s tied up,” said Brand. “We have to focus and go out there and be confident and try to get a win.

And a win — as unrealistic as it may have sounded a few weeks ago — would put the Sixers just one victory away from a trip to the Eastern Conference finals, with Game 6 set for Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An off-duty corrections officer and his son were shot Sunday night in the city’s Frankford neighborhood, according to authorities.

It happened at about 10:15 p.m. on the 1200 block of Adams Avenue. Both victims were taken to Temple University Hospital.

Police say the son was shot multiple times and is listed in critical condition. His father was reportedly shot in the wrist and is in stable condition. Police have not yet released their identities.

No arrests have been made as of 11 p.m. Sunday. Police are investigating.

The fire happened a little after 6 p.m. in the 2800 block of Hedley Street. The elderly woman, whose identity has not yet been released, was found in the kitchen and pronounced dead at the scene at 6:50 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Iguodala has long been blamed for the Philadelphia 76ers’ eight-year run of painfully mediocre basketball. Before this season, Iguodala had never won a playoff series. He was labeled overpaid, overhyped, and he always led the Sixers in trade rumors.

His most memorable shot before April? Most Sixers fans would shrug at the question.

This amazing and improbable postseason, though? Take your pick.

Maybe it was the go-ahead free throws with 2.2 seconds left in Game 6 against Chicago that knocked out the top-seeded Bulls. The image of Iguodala standing on the scorer’s table and celebrating with his teammates has been an oft-replayed scene over the last few weeks.

There’s a new No. 1 contender — and a 1A — after he helped the 76ers storm back from 18 down in the third quarter to beat the Boston Celtics in Game 4 on Friday night. The big reason the Eastern Conference semifinals are tied 2-2 going into Monday’s Game 5 in Boston rests on Iguodala’s late-game jumpers.

Iguodala shook off a shaky shooting night with a step-back jumper over a charging Ray Allen with 1:22 left for an 85-83 lead. Then he buried the dagger. Iguodala took the feed from a driving Lou Williams and let rip a 3 from the wing — boom! A tie game became a five-point lead with two flicks of the wrist and Iguodala did what he wanted to do since he was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2004 draft — send a packed postseason Philly crowd into a frenzy.

Fans finally have a reason to cheer their All-Star.

After he won Game 6 from the line, coach Doug Collins noted how Iguodala’s uneven career arc made him worthy of the accolades.

“For ‘Dre, he’s gone through a lot,” Collins said. “I told him, ‘Nobody deserves this more than you do to have this moment. To move on and to be able to experience this.’”

Iguodala has heard since Allen Iverson was traded that he wasn’t ready to handle the responsibility of being “the man” for the Sixers. He signed an $80 million, six-year deal in 2008 that only served as a lightning rod for the fan base when he struggled to take the Sixers past 40 wins. He has almost $31 million owed to him over the final two seasons of his deal — which still makes him an attractive trading chip for a contender looking to added one more All-Star to get to the next level.

Under Collins and a blossoming nucleus that includes Jrue Holiday, Evan Turner and Lavoy Allen, Iguodala has found his niche. He was fourth on the team in scoring his season (12.4 points), and was rewarded with his first All-Star berth. Iguodala is one of the top defenders in the league — his stout perimeter shut-down play is one tool that was never doubted — and is vying for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

He’ll never play like the superstar so many expected of him. But he doesn’t have to on this unselfish team.

“I’m happy, but not as happy as I am for my teammates,” Iguodala said. “That’s something I’ve been trying to get better at as my career has gone on, which is the type of mark I leave for my teammates. I think back to (assistant) coach Aaron McKie. He didn’t do a lot on the court my first year here and his last year here, but he left a mark on how my career would shape out because of how I followed him. So I’m trying to do the same things he showed to me for my teammates, and this is a part of it.

Like the rest of the Sixers, he doesn’t want the run to end.

They know they need a better start than they had in Game 4 when Boston reeled off the first 14 points, led by 15 at halftime and 18 early in the third quarter. The Sixers have won three postseason games when trailing by at least 10 points — a sign of resiliency, for sure. But the taxing comebacks eventually leave a team worn down as the benches get shorter and practice time is at a minimum. The two-day break will surely help both teams.

The Celtics needed a day to forget about the epic collapse.

“In the first half, the execution was beautiful,” coach Doc Rivers said. “We did all the right things. In the second half, we just didn’t do it. They pressured us. They took us out of a lot of stuff.”

Kevin Garnett scored only nine points and Rivers’ loyalty toward giving veteran Ray Allen important minutes in the fourth seemed to backfire.

The Sixers attacked the lane, and attacked some more. They got to the line 36 times. When there was nowhere to go, well, they kicked the ball out and found open shots on the perimeter. Just like Iguodala’s buckets over the final 90 seconds.

“We were up 15, you really have to take their confidence away from them and we didn’t do that,” Celtics forward Paul Pierce said. “We gave that team some life, they took that and ran with it and it carried all the way through the third and fourth quarter. That was really on us.”

The Sixers guaranteed they’ll be home for Game 6 on Wednesday.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The PECO multicultural series continues at Penn’s Landing today with the celebration of Israel’s Independence Day.

The Great Plaza is packed with dozens of tents for visitors to enjoy Israeli food, there is plenty of information on available programs and services as well as fun activities for kids.

At the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s tent, they have a mural set up for people to paint.

“Everyone is standing here, painting different sections of it. We’ve got the Wailing Wall, we’ve got families together, it’s a pretty fun time.”

“It’s really interesting. We can do anything we want with it, with the colors.”

The mural will be finished by visitors then put on display at different events during the course of the
year.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - After more than 40 years as an educator and administrator, Malvern Prep’s president is calling it a career.

Jim Stewart’s career began in 1970 as a Spanish teacher. He held several different positions over the years and climbed the ranks at the school eventually earning the position as president.

“Bittersweet that I will not be part of it anymore on a daily basis.”

Stewart still thought classes everyday, all the way through his career.

“It was my philosophy that all the administrators should be in the classroom at least once a day because they could experience what the kids are about and also the other teachers would see that they’re invested in the same things they invested in day in and day out.”

So what’s next?

“I’m probably going to volunteer somewhere, probably in the school or a charity.”

Stewart says he doesn’t have any regrets; he just hopes some of the tough decisions he had to make over the years were the right ones.

Now, he says, it’s time to let a younger president bring new ideas to Malvern Prep.

“I think they’re well-positioned to go forward. This new strategic plan they have, they have a new head that’s 36-years-old; I think they’ll do very well with that.”

Police arrested 28-year-old Matthew Kondash on Saturday in while he was kayaking in Cape Charles, Va.

Police say Kondash was riding on a motorcycle Friday morning, when he hit Eleanor Pusey of Laurel as she crossed Sycamore Road. Pusey was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kondash was flown to Christiana Hospital, but his injuries weren’t as serious as originally believed and he was released before investigators arrived.

He is charged with manslaughter, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and other offenses.

The fire was reported at about 11:30 a.m. at an apartment building in the 4400 block of Paul Street and was placed under control at about 1:30 p.m.

The Red Cross is assisting about 10 people who were forced to evacuate the area due to the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

This time, though, the hitters couldn’t be blamed for Philadelphia’s 5-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

Lee (0-2), making just his sixth start of the season after spending time on the DL with a strained oblique, had his worst start of the year. In seven innings, he allowed five runs on nine hits — both season highs. He struck out six and walked one.

“They’ve got a good offense,” Lee said. “They make you throw a lot of pitches. They foul off good pitches until they get one to hit. It’s definitely the sign of a good offense, which they are.”

The three-time All-Star and 2008 AL Cy Young winner has been pitching well this season, entering with a 1.95 ERA, but has not been getting run support some of the time or bullpen support other times.

Philadelphia has scored just nine runs over Lee’s 44 innings this season.

“Tonight it was definitely my fault,” he said. “I’ve gotta do a better job. I’ve gotta get deeper in the game without giving up so many runs. This one falls on me.”

Mike Aviles led off with a homer for the second straight game, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia blasted a crucial three-run homer in the third inning to keep Lee winless.

“He made some pitches and they hit him,” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. “(Saltalamacchia’s) ball was hit pretty good. They were hitting some balls hard. His stuff was good. He was throwing and he got hit.”

Asked if Lee’s lack of run support would be frustrating for the pitcher, Manuel said, “It might be, I could see that.”

Lee credited his counterpart, Josh Beckett, for keeping the Philadelphia offense to just one run.

“He never let us put anything together offensively,” Lee said. “He pitched a good game. Give a lot of credit to Beckett.”

Beckett pitched 7 2-3 strong innings for Boston, which has won eight of 10 games overall after taking the final two of this three-game series.

Beckett (4-4) was booed off the mound May 10 when he allowed seven runs in 2 1-3 innings following news that he had played golf while skipping a start to rest a strained lat muscle — but he has been spectacular since.

After shutting out Seattle in a home win on May 15 by pitching seven scoreless innings and giving up four hits with nine strikeouts and two walks, Beckett allowed one run on seven hits Sunday while striking out five and walking two.

“I was making pitches when I needed to and the defense was unbelievable, everybody contributed,” Beckett said. “I was keeping the ball down and I threw a few changeups, or I got ground balls. It’s nice to keep the ball in this ballpark.”

His only blemish was Juan Pierre’s sacrifice fly in the eighth that gave Philadelphia its only run.

“His stuff was really moving today,” Boston manager Bobby Valentine said of Beckett. “He was aggressive in the strike zone and he looked like he wanted it.”

Adrian Gonzalez went 2 for 4 and now is 9 for 16 lifetime against Lee.

Aviles started the game by ripping Lee’s 1-1 cutter into the seats in left to put Boston up 1-0.

“I just try to put the ball in play, try to hit the ball up the middle and whatever happens, happens,” Aviles said. “I’m just trying to get on base.”

After Aviles’ RBI single in the second gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead, Boston went ahead 5-0 in the third inning on Saltalamacchia’s three-run homer that cleared the seats in center field and reached Ashburn Alley, the fan walkway behind the outfield seats. Lee said the pitch was a mistake.

“I threw a changeup up out over the plate,” he said. “Other than that, I felt like they battled. They fouled off a lot of good pitches, made me work a lot early. They got themselves a nice lead and never really lost it.”

Lee settled down after that, retiring the next 11 batters before Beckett’s single off the wall in center to lead off the seventh. But the damage had been done.

“I was hoping once (Lee) settled in he started pitching pretty good we could score some runs for him, but we couldn’t do it,” Manuel said. “We hit some balls hard early but we couldn’t get any big hits and drive runs in.”

Beckett was in total command against a Phillies lineup that had 15 hits the previous night. Other than the third inning, the right-hander allowed just two runners to reach second base prior to the eighth.

“He kept the ball down good,” Manuel said. “He hung in there, kept his pitch count down and (it) allowed him to go deep.”

The Phillies threatened in the third, putting runners on second and third with one out after Lee doubled, but Jimmy Rollins grounded out to third and Pierre lined out sharply to first to keep Philadelphia scoreless.

Philadelphia scored its run in the eighth on Pierre’s sacrifice fly to left that scored pinch-hitter Pete Orr, who doubled. Valentine lifted Beckett after the right-hander walked Shane Victorino to put runners on first and second. And the bases were loaded when reliever Vicente Padilla walked Hunter Pence. But Padilla got Ty Wigginton to ground out to second to escape the jam.

“That’s a situation you want to be in and Padilla did a good job,” Wigginton said.

The Phillies were 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position Sunday, and now are 3 for 21 in their last two games.

Notes: A day after making a sensational catch in center field, Boston’s Ryan Sweeney didn’t play. Valentine said he would be evaluated further on Monday, mentioning a possible concussion. . PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) — The Archdiocese of Philadelphia says two priests have been found unsuitable for ministry following allegations of sexual abuse of minors.

A statement from the archdiocese Sunday says the priests, 73-year-old Monsignor George J. Mazzotta and 77-year-old Monsignor Hugh P. Cambell, “have agreed to accept a supervised life of prayer and penance.”

Monsignor Mazzotta was found unsuitable for ministry following a substantiated allegation of sexual abuse of a minor. Since May 2010 when the archdiocese received the allegation and reported it to law enforcement, Monsignor Mazzotta has not been permitted to exercise his public ministry, wear clerical garb, or present himself publicly as a priest.

An announcement regarding Monsignor Mazzotta was made this weekend at Stella Maris Parish in Philadelphia and Saint Madeline Parish in Ridley Park, his two most recent assignments.

“They’re criminals, like any other criminals,” said Jerry Tempesta.

“It’s horrible, I really do and I think it goes way back,” said Carol Tempesta.

The Tempestas are parishioners at Stella Maris.

“I remember when he left, we were all in shock,” said Carol.

Monsignor Cambell, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, was also found not suitable for ministry following self-reported sexual abuse of a minor. Following the report in December 2011, Monsignor Cambell was placed on administrative leave and he too was restricted from presenting himself as a priest publicly.

An announcement was made at Saint Maximilian Kolbe Parish in West Chester, his most recent assignment prior to retirement.

David Clohessy, the director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, says he’s upset Cambell’s admission wasn’t revealed immediately.

“We hope that Chaput personally visits each and every parish where these men worked and that he emphatically begs victims and witnesses and whistle blowers to speak up so that these two men might be criminally prosecuted,” said Clohessy.

Earlier this month, the archdiocese said five priests would be permanently barred from ministry after substantiated allegations of sexual abuse or inappropriate conduct. Officials said three other suspended priests would be allowed to return to ministry.

The announcements regarding Monsignor Mazzotta and Monsignor Cambell are not connected to those cases.

The Phillies treated an injury to Howard’s left foot last Sept. 18 with a cortisone shot, an ailment the club termed as bursitis. Less than three weeks later, Howard tore his left Achilles’ tendon while running to first base after his final at-bat of the season.

That injury has kept the three-time All-Star and former MVP, who signed a five-year, $125 million extension in 2010, out all season.

“I wanted to clear up some of the insinuations regarding a cortisone shot,” Amaro said Sunday during Philadelphia’s game against Boston. “The cortisone shot was treated for some (other) issue he had. It was not part of the Achilles’ injury. We didn’t feel it was an issue. That was resolved by the time he had his injury. One thing had nothing to do with the other.”

Amaro was responding to a story in Sunday’s Philadelphia Inquirer suggesting that the cortisone shot may have contributed to the Achilles injury.

A doctor in the Inquirer report was quoted as saying, “When it comes to the risk of an Achilles tendon tear, I’m concerned about cortisone.”

Amaro said the Phillies always put their players first.

“We’re probably one of the most conservative clubs in baseball in administering treatment, and we always want to make sure we have the player’s best interest,” Amaro said.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Some 500 people participated in Philadelphia’s first “cure search” walk. The walk is a fundraiser for children’s cancer research.

Jared Bender has been through more, at nine-years-old, than many adults ever will go through. Jared is a survivor of Ewing’s sarcoma. Forty years ago, that cancer was a death sentence for the children and teenagers it afflicts.

Now, survival rates are 60 to 80 percent, because of the very research that inspired Jared to join in the one mile walk around Franklin Square on Sunday.

“I hope it raises a lot of money and I also hope a lot of people get better.”

Organizers say children’s cancers get the least research funding, because they are the rarest, but for parents who’ve lost a child, that idea is an abstraction.

Tim Court’s seven-year-old son Christopher died of a brain tumor in October.

“There really is nothing they can do at the moment for brain tumors so, that’s why we’re supporting this and it’s amazing. If we were just asking for donations, I don’t think it would have been the same but because it’s a big event, it’s worked out very well.”

Forty-one-year-old Lee Cuong of Lester and 42-year-old Hai Lee of Upper Darby were the only two people aboard the 19-foot boat, which capsized early Sunday morning in the mouth of the Shark River near Asbury Park.

Neither person was injured, but it was not immediately known what caused the boat to capsize.

A Belmar police officer notified the Coast Guard around 2:20 a.m. that two people were on the boat’s overturned hull and waving their arms.

A 25-foot response boat-small crew from the Shark River station rescued the pair around 2:30 a.m. and brought them back to the station, where they declined medical attention.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS/AP) – A New Jersey woman who lost her son in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing shares her thoughts on the passing of the man responsible for her son’s death. As well as another New Jersey mom whose daughter was killed.

When Eileen Monetti got a call telling her Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was dead, her first reaction was one of skepticism.

“He has supposedly been dead or dying a number of times especially since he’s been released from the Scottish prison, so I am really, really, hopeful that this time it’s true only because you don’t want to keep going through this over and over and over again.”

She says the news of al-Megrahi’s death is just one chapter in what is a continuing story for her family.

“You know I’m a person who believes in a judgement after life and he has to deal with whoever is gonna judge him.”

Monetti’s 20-year-old son Rick was a junior at Syracuse. She says al-Megrahi’s death does not bring closure because there are still many unanswered questions surrounding the details of the bombing.

A New Jersey mom whose daughter was killed in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing says the death of the only person ever convicted in the case should not be “an excuse” to end any ongoing investigations into who planned and carried out the blast.

Susan Cohen tells The Associated Press she has “no pity” for Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, whose death was announced Sunday. The Cape May Court House woman lost her 20-year-old daughter in the bombing and hopes that United States and British officials will now “dig even deeper” into the case .

Cohen was an outspoken opponent of the decision to release al-Megrahi and allow him to return home in 2009 on humanitarian grounds due to prostate cancer. She felt he should have stayed in prison until he died.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Mayor Michael Nutter just appointed a new Executive Director for the Philadelphia Youth Commission, and the former coordinator for the National Peace Alliance has a story that is inspiring.

“Both of my parents, mother and father, spent more time behind bars than at home,” Jamira Burley says.

Born and raised in some of the toughest, deadliest neighborhoods in Philadelphia, 23-year-old Burley has dedicated her life to combating youth violence.

“I am one of 16 children. I have 10 older brothers, and I have five younger brothers and sisters. As the death by violence rate grew with me, I watched all 10 of my older brothers get incarcerated for short or long periods of time.”

Burley life started out a little uncertain, but when her 20-year-old brother Andre was murdered in 2005, she began to speak out about violence, forming the Panther Peace Core at Overbrook High School when she was just 16. Since then, the 2012 Temple graduate has become a powerful advocate for young people.

“When you get young people involved at an early age, it allows for them to continue to stay involved for a lifetime.”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Independence Seaport Museum is offering an interesting way for the public to experience life aboard a retired war ship.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police have no suspects or motive in a North Philadelphia fatal shooting Saturday night.

A 33-year-old man near Reese and Cumberland Streets was pronounced dead at the scene of a head wound.
The incident took place around 10 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A wrong way crash on the Route 1 Roosevelt Extension closed the northbound roadway for several hours and sent two people to the hospital.

Two men were injured when a southbound SUV traveling in the northbound lanes of the Roosevelt Extension first struck a car and then hit a wall near the Broad Street off ramp around 5 a.m. Sunday.

Both victims, in their 40s, are under evaluation and treatment for non-life threatening injuries at Temple University hospital.

Police closed the northbound lanes near the accident scene for several hours. There was no word from police why or how the driver wound up going the wrong direction on the wrong side of the roadway.
The investigation is ongoing.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The big TD Bank Philadelphia International Cycling Championship is June 3rd, and a new part of the action this year is a course that anyone can try before the big race begins.

And you can raise money for charity at the same time.

“This charity ride is for Neighborhood Bike Works,” says Jim Wiley, a local businessman and avid cyclist (in top photo).  “What happens is that they collect used bicycles and bicycle parts, and from those scrap parts they teach kids in Philadelphia how to build a bike.  And they build a bike with them, and these kids get a bike,” he explains.

Wiley will be among those riding and raising money for Neighborhood Bike Works.

“I always grew up with a bike as most people grew up with a bike, and these are kids that for the first time ever will have their own bicycle,” he says.  “And they will also have built it themselves.”

Benjamin Franklin High School ninth grader Robert Taylor is a graduate of the “Earn a Bike” program.

“I actually love the program,” he tells KYW Newsradio.  “It taught me a lot of stuff about bikes and has given me a lot of opportunities.”

Including bike racing.

“We do have a racing team,” Taylor says.  “I have to say that’s been the most life-changing thing I ever went through.  It showed me so many skills, and I’ve been able to go to so many places and meet so many new people.”

Wiley, the businessman, thinks the program provides young people with advantages large and small: “Kids who’ve never had a bicycle can now have a bicycle that they can ride for the rest of their life,” he says.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Insisting it won’t be the modern-day equivalent of a chain gang, a city councilman is calling for hearings on the idea of paying inmates of Philadelphia prisons to work on streets and in the parks.

Councilman at large Jim Kenney has no specific proposal, but he wants a hearing to explore the idea of putting local inmates to work cleaning parks and streets for $10 an hour. Paying them is important, he says, as it would send a positive message.

“It gives them an opportunity to do service for the community at a cheaper cost than it would be otherwise, and also to put some money in their bank accounts, so they can see that they can work and earn, as opposed to steal and earn,” Kenney alleges.

Kenney says the prisoners would have to be on electronic monitoring, like an ankle bracelet.

“God forbid the person bolted, we would catch them within an hour, and they’d be out of the program.”

No date has yet been set for the hearing.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Months after a school voucher program failed to pass the Pennsylvania state house, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia continues its call for school choice, declaring today “Voucher Sunday.”

Archbishop Charles Chaput’s recent column on www.catholicphilly.com is entitled, “Why Catholic Schools are Worth Saving.”

He says the next few weeks are critical in school choice efforts in Pennsylvania. So, at parishes throughout the Archdiocese, there is a call for state legislation on school choice.

Archdiocese Spokeswoman Donna Farrell says students, teachers and parents will make the case to fellow parishioners.

“People will rally and contact their legislators and tell them Pennsylvania Catholics are speaking up and really want to see Opportunity scholarships, vouchers and expanded EITC. It’s a question of fairness,” Farrell explains.

They hope this galvanizes the type of support that saved four high schools that the Blue Ribbon Commission recommended for closure.

Supporters say school choice would save taxpayer money and would allow low-income families to send their children to better schools. Opponents, like the National Education Association, say school choice programs take needed funds away from public schools.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Unemployment figures for April 2012 show that teen jobless rates are up to almost 25 percent nationwide. But some states, like Pennsylvania, are showing better numbers.

The Employment Policies Institute broke down the unemployment figures and found that New Jersey’s rate was over 26%, Pennsylvania’s was 16.5% and Delaware was 19%. EPI’s Michael Saltsman says despite a high number of unemployed teens, it’s better than it was.

“Even though there is some improvement, and I think teens are going to have an easier time than last summer or the summer before that, they’re still facing a lot of competition for what is, realistically, fewer jobs than there used to be,” Saltsman says.

He also say that ten years ago, there were a lot more jobs in retail and restaurants billed as starter jobs, like bussing tables or stocking shelves, and they don’t exist anymore. And another factor is that more skilled adult workers are competing for those same jobs.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Students and staff at a Northeast Philadelphia school are waiting to find out who will run their school in the fall.

The School Reform Commission is still deciding what to do with Creighton Elementary. The panel put off a vote last month on a staff recommendation to convert Creighton to a charter school run by Universal Companies. Teachers presented their own plan. At last week’s SRC meeting, teacher Regina Feighan-Drach opposed a charter conversion, offering a Top Ten list as evidence.

“The number one reason why Thomas Creighton should remain a public school? We love our kids,” Feighan-Drach said.

Some parents preferred Universal, but Creighton second-grader Jake Lee doesn’t.

“Well, you see. We like our school the way it is. If you change it, we won’t have all these great things. And that would make me sad. Please don’t change it!” Lee said.

The SRC is expected to decide Creighton’s fate before its June meeting.

NEW JERSEY (CBS) — Recently released tax revenue figures in New Jersey are giving leaders second thoughts about all the economic recovery talk in the state.

Governor Chris Christie’s economic people projected almost 5% growth by now, but revenue collections through April show annual growth at about half that rate. In fact, former state treasurer David Rousseau–now an analyst with New Jersey Policy Perspective–was taken aback by some of the numbers.

“I was surprised that the actual collections for the income tax and the corporate tax were not just below projections, but below the previous year’s actual collection,” Rousseau says.

Bottom line: there’s now a $230 million shortfall, and that number is expected to grow. How high depends on who you talk to. Budget analysts for the administration and legislature are to appear this week at a pair of public hearings to discuss how to deal with all this. But Rousseau is joining a growing list of people who are suggesting that everyone put talk of a tax cut–included in the Governor’s proposed $32 billion budget–on hold.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Philadelphia teachers say they’ve been left out of the School Reform Commission’s overhaul plan.

“I would like to urge you to fix what the district has, not try to recreate the wheel,” said Hillary Linardopoulos, a third grade teacher at Julia DeBurgos Elementary in West Kensington.

She told the School Reform Commission last week that the plan to downsize the central office and run schools through so-called “achievement networks” depends too much on charters, and was drawn up without input from teachers.

“It feels that we have been largely left out of the planning phases of much of what transpires in the district. Yet, we are the ones in the schools day in and day out.”

Commissioner Wendell Pritchett asked how the SRC could better interact with teachers. Linardopoulos said she’s available before, after, and even during school.

“I would welcome focus groups and real dialogue between teachers, central office staff and the SRC, so that we can help minimize this disconnect that is so profoundly affecting teacher morale.”
