PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Commencement ceremonies are being held Sunday for Villanova’s graduating class and among them is the university’s largest ever group of female engineering grads.

The national average for female engineering grads is 18-percent, but at Villanova, female engineering graduates make up over 31-percent.

The main force behind that number is Dean Gary Gabriele in the Engineering Department.

He says the first step toward growing that number was to “increase the number of women faculty, so that when young women came here, there were role models that they could have and people that they could talk to about engineering.”

One of the young women graduating Sunday is Hillary Guardo of Flemington. She is graduating with a mechanical engineering degree, and will be working for the Navy.

“We do all the design, maintenance, start to finish for all the nuclear reactors that power the submarines and the air craft carriers in the Navy,” Guardo says

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - Burlington County is hoping to make one of its major highways a little safer for pedestrians with a little help from New Jersey.

Route 130 cuts a 22.5 mile path through a dozen towns in the county. Police departments will share in a $225,000 grant to provide more patrols along the highway over the next 18 months.

Why?

Thirteen people were killed walking along the highway between 2007 and 2011.

And while the extra patrols will help, state Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa says pedestrians have to exercise what he calls “common sense.”

“If you’re going to walk on heavily travelled roads where the cars are going fast, that’s a highway area, you really need to take care,” says Chiesa.

Like crossing only at traffic lights, wear reflective clothing at night and walk facing the oncoming traffic.

DES MOINES, Iowa (CBS/AP) — Lottery officials have announced winning numbers in a near-historic Powerball jackpot.

The numbers drawn Saturday are: 22, 10, 13, 14, 52 and a Powerball of 11.

Officials estimate the jackpot at $590.5 million.

With four of every five possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, someone is almost sure to win the game’s highest jackpot. The problem, of course, is those same odds just about guarantee the lucky person won’t be you.

The chances of winning the prize remain astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That’s how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play.

But since about 80 percent of the possible combinations have been purchased, lottery officials say it’s likely the winning ticket could be selected.

Trailing by as many as 12 points, mostly in the first quarter, the Soul fought back.

DB Rayshaun Kizer forced a fumble early in the second quarter that would change the game’s momentum.

FB Derrick Ross scored on a 1-yard carry and K Carlos Martinez kicked the extra point for the Soul to take the lead 21-19.

The Soul ended the first half 28-19 and would lead for the rest of the game.

WR Tiger Jones had three touchdowns for the game as the Soul beat the Predators 61-51.

Philadelphia improved their record to 4-4 for the season.

The Soul will visit the Tampa Bay Storm on Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m.

The incident happened at about 8:20 p.m. at Bonsall Drive and Grays Avenue in Glenolden.

Officials say the man was taken to the hospital with severe head injuries.

There is no word on the victim’s condition at this time.

New Jersey Lottery officials say the winning ticket was sold at Kwik Farms in Tinton Falls.

The winner has not yet claimed their $95 million prize.

The retailer will receive a $30,000 bonus for selling the winning jackpot ticket.

The numbers drawn Friday night were 11, 15, 35, 43 and 49. The Mega Ball number was 41.

The Mega Millions jackpot reboots to $12 million for Tuesday’s drawing.

This marks the third major lottery win in New Jersey this year. Pedro Quezada of Passaic won a $338.3 million Powerball jackpot in March, while Angel Guallpa-Mayancela of Orange claimed an $65.7 million Mega Millions jackpot in January.

Besides the big winner in Friday night’s drawing, three tickets sold in New Jersey matched the five Mega Millions numbers, making them worth $250,000 each. One of the winning tickets was sold at 7-11 in Trenton, Mercer County.  Another ticket was sold at Country Farm Food Store in Pomona, Atlantic County.

Another six tickets sold in the state matched four numbers and the Mega Ball number and are each worth $10,000. One ticket was sold at Country Farm Food Store located in Pomona, Atlantic County and another ticket was sold at Ramtown Pharmacy in Howell, Monmouth County.

McInerney headed home a corner kick from Sebastien Le Toux for Philadelphia (5-4-3), which beat the Fire 1-0 for the second time in a week. The Union also won 1-0 at Chicago last Saturday.

The Fire played short-handed for much of the second half after Wells Thompson received his second yellow card — and an automatic ejection — in the 62nd.

Chicago (2-7-1) lost its third game in a row to fall to 0-4-1 on the road.

DES MOINES, Iowa (CBS/AP) — It’s all about the odds.

With the majority of possible combinations of Powerball numbers in play, someone is almost sure to win the game’s highest jackpot during Saturday night’s drawing, a windfall of hundreds of millions of dollars — and that’s after taxes.

The problem, of course, is those same odds just about guarantee the lucky person won’t be you.

The chances of winning the estimated $600 million prize remain astronomically low: 1 in 175.2 million. That’s how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play. But lottery officials estimate about 80 percent of those possible combinations have been purchased, so now’s the time to buy.

“This would be the roll to get in on,” said Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich. “Of course there’s no guarantee, and that’s the randomness of it, and the fun of it.”

That hasn’t deterred people across Powerball-playing states — 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands — from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday for their chance at striking it filthy rich.

At a mini market in the heart of Los Angeles’ Chinatown, employees broke the steady stream of customers into two lines: One for Powerball ticket buyers and one for everybody else. Some people appeared to be looking for a little karma.

“We’ve had two winners over $10 million here over the years, so people in the neighborhood think this is the lucky store,” employee Gordon Chan said as he replenished a stack of lottery tickets on a counter.

Workers at one suburban Columbia, S.C., convenience store were so busy with ticket buyers that they hadn’t updated their sign with the current jackpot figure, which was released Friday. Customer Armous Peterson was reluctant to share his system for playing the Powerball. The 56-year-old was well aware of the long odds, but he also knows the mantra of just about every person buying tickets.

“Somebody is going to win,” he said. “Lots of people are going to lose, too. But if you buy a ticket, that winner might be you.”

The latest jackpot is the world’s second largest overall, just behind a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot in March 2012. The $600 million jackpot, which could grow before the numbers are drawn at 10:59 EDT Saturday, currently includes a $376.9 million cash option.

Charles Hill of Dallas says he buys lottery tickets every day. And he knows exactly what he’d do if he wins.

“What would I do with my money? I’d run and hide,” he said. “I wouldn’t want none of my kinfolks to find me.”

Clyde Barrow, a public policy professor at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, specializes in the gaming industry. He said one of the key factors behind the ticket-buying frenzy is the size of the jackpot — people are interested in the easy investment.

“Even though the odds are very low, the investment is very small,” he said. “Two dollars gets you a chance.”

That may be why Ed McCuen has a Powerball habit that’s as regular as clockwork. The 57-year-old electrical contractor from Savannah, Ga., buys one ticket a week, regardless of the possible loot. It’s a habit he didn’t alter Saturday.

“You’ve got one shot in a gazillion or whatever,” McCuen said, tucking his ticket in his pocket as he left a local convenience store. “You can’t win unless you buy a ticket. But whether you buy one or 10 or 20, it’s insignificant.”

Seema Sharma doesn’t seem to think so. The newsstand employee in Manhattan’s Penn Station has purchased $80 worth of tickets for herself. She also was selling tickets all morning at a steady pace, instructing buyers where to stand if they wanted machine-picked tickets or to choose their own numbers.

“I work very hard — too hard — and I want to get the money so I can finally relax,” she said. “You never know.”

Officials will conduct the drawing live Saturday night from Tallahassee, Fla.

Arroyo (4-4) struck out six and allowed one runner to reach third in winning his third straight start against Philadelphia. He was 1-7 in his first 10 games against the Phillies, but has figured them out over the last two seasons.

Votto had a two-run shot and walked twice to reach safely six times. Ryan Hanigan hit a three-run homer.

Kyle Kendrick (4-2) gave up four runs and eight hits with a season-high four walks in six innings. Kendrick hadn’t allowed more than two runs in his previous seven starts.

Cincinnati won for the seventh time in its last eight games and improved to 4-1 against the Phillies this year.

Arroyo entered with a 6.00 career ERA against the Phillies, including a 9.60 ERA in three starts at Citizens Bank Park. He’s 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA in three starts against them since last Aug. 22.

Todd Frazier led off the second with an infield single, snapping an 0-for-19 slump. Donald Lutz followed with a single. Then Hanigan connected for his first extra-base hit of the season, giving the Reds a 3-0 lead. Hanigan had eight singles in 54 at-bats before taking Kendrick deep to left.

Hanigan was hit by a pitch leading off the sixth. He advanced on a sacrifice and scored on Zack Cozart’s two-out double to right to make it 4-0.

The Reds added four runs off three relievers in the eighth. Votto hit one out in the ninth.

Arroyo didn’t need all that support. He baffled hitters with his assortment of slow stuff, occasionally mixing a fastball with his mid-70s off-speed pitches.

For Kendrick, it was his worst outing since allowing five runs in Philadelphia’s home opener. Kendrick has been Philadelphia’s most consistent starter this season, posting a 2.82 ERA and outperforming Cole Hamels, Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay.

Since returning to the rotation last August, Kendrick is 11-6 with a 3.02 ERA in 21 starts.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Oxbow has won the Preakness, ruining Orb’s bid to capture the Triple Crown.

Oxbow led from start to finish. It was the sixth Preakness victory for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas and 15th Triple Crown win, the most in horse racing history.

“I get paid to spoil dreams,” Lukas said in an interview with NBC moments after the race. “Unfortunately we go over here and you can’t mail ‘em in. It’s a different surface and a different time. You gotta line ‘em up and win ‘em.

Orb finished fourth. The Kentucky Derby winner was a 3-5 favorite in Saturday’s race, but he became another casualty of starting on the rail in the Preakness. Since 1950, only two horses have won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown from the No. 1 post position.

Orb’s five-race winning streak ended on an overcast, windy day at Pimlico Race Course. The brown colt had not lost since Nov. 24.

Oxbow was coming off a sixth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, where he made a move for the lead in the final turn but faded.

In the Preakness, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens took control at the outset and never relinquished the advantage, winning this race for the third time in his career.

Oxbow covered the 1 3/16th miles in 1:57.54. He went off as a 15-1 underdog and paid $32.80, $12 and $8.80.

Itsmyluckyday finished second and paid $7.80 and $5. Mylute paid $5.20 to show.

Mylute, with Rosie Napravnik in the saddle, came in fifth in the Kentucky Derby. Racing at the track where she earned her first career victory, Napravnik was attempting to become the first female jockey to win the Preakness.

Lukas had three entrants in the nine-horse race. Titletown Five and Will Take Charge did not finish in the money, but the 77-year-old Hall of Fame trainer nevertheless made it to the winner’s circle.

Oxbow bested Itsmyluckyday by 1 3/4 lenths.

For Lukas, the victory broke a tie with “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons for most Triple Crown wins.

It meant a lot to Stevens, too.

“It’s so special,” the jockey said. “Wayne, he supported me. Put me on my first Triple Crown winner. A lot of people were trying to get me off. He was the first guy to call me up and said ‘I’m going to have a colt for you. His name is Oxbow.’”

Stevens added, “Wayne is like a brother, coach, a father figure to me.”

Stevens almost couldn’t believe how well it went.

“We came in here with a lot of confidence,” he said. “When I hit the half-mile pole, I told myself ‘Are you kidding me?’ ‘Is this happening?’”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A two day festival kicked off Saturday at South Philly’s Italian Market.

There was music, crafts and of course food along six blocks.

“I got a pulled pork sandwich and they got meatball sandwiches,” said Steve Cohen of Pennsauken as he and his family chowed down.

“So the festival has become a tradition where people come back and people who are here celebrate being here. And it also gives the merchants an opportunity to show off what they do,” said Michelle Gambino with the South 9th Street business association and festival producer.

People also dress as saints and greet the crowd as another tradition. That procession takes place Sunday at 11 a.m.

“And people pin dollars o the saints and say a prayer for good luck and then they get a holy card,” Gambino explained.

With that in mind, here are 10 things to know about the Preakness — and beyond.

1. ELEVEN HAVE DONE IT. Starting in 1919 with Sir Barton, 11 horses have won the Triple Crown, sweeping the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. Orb will be trying to become the 34th horse with a Triple Crown chance. Of the horses who failed, 19 didn’t win the Belmont and three didn’t make the race, including I’ll Have Another in 2012. Last year’s Derby and Preakness winner was scratched the day before the Belmont with a tendon injury and retired.

2. INSIDE SLOT. Orb leaves from the No. 1 post in the Preakness, not among the most popular places to start. Since 1961, only one horse — Tabasco Cat in 1994 — has won from the rail.

3. SECOND CHANCERS AND NEW SHOOTERS. Kentucky Derby winner Orb will be facing five familiar foes from the Derby and three new shooters. The Derby five are Mylute, Oxbow, Will Take Charge, Itsmyluckyday and Goldencents; the fresh faces are Departing, Govenor Charlie and Titletown Five.

4. SHORTER DISTANCE. The Preakness distance is 1 3-16 miles, a sixteenth of a mile shorter than the Kentucky Derby, and five sixteenths shorter than the 1½-mile Belmont Stakes, called the Test of the Champion. The longer distance is considered one of the major reasons why Triple tries are thwarted. In recent years, two horses who won the Preakness convincingly — Funny Cide by 9½ lengths in 2003 and Smarty Jones by a record 11½ lengths in 2004 — fell short in the Belmont. Funny Cide was a length off the lead with a quarter mile to go and finished third; Smarty Jones was passed in the final 70 yards by Birdstone.

5. A NICE REBOUND. Goldencents and Co. are looking for a little Preakness history. If the horse wins, he will top Louis Quatorze for the best rebound from the Derby. In 1996, Louis Quatorze finished 16th in the Derby and won the Preakness two weeks later. Goldencents was 17th in the Derby. A win would make Kevin Krigger the first black jockey to win the race since Willie Simms with Sly Fox in 1898, and it would make Doug O’Neill the first back-to-back Preakness winning trainer since Bob Baffert in 2001 and 2002.

6. THREE CHANCES. D. Wayne Lukas has one-third of the field in the nine-horse Preakness. The 77-year-old trainer is seeking his sixth Preakness win, which would break a second-place tie with Bob Baffert and Thomas J. Healey. The leader is Robert Wyndham Walden with seven, including five in a row starting in 1878. Lukas also is seeking a record 14th win in Triple Crown race win, which would put him one ahead of “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons. Lukas trains Oxbow, Will Take Charge and Titletown Five.

7. ROSIE’S RUN. Rosie Napravnik will be aboard 5-1 second choice Mylute. A win would make the rider who started her career in Maryland the first female to win the Preakness. She posted the best finish for a female rider in the Derby when Mylute ran fifth.

8. HOF LINEUP. There are a half-dozen Hall of Famers in the Preakness. The trainers are Shug McGaughey (Orb), D. Wayne Lukas (Oxbow, Will Take Charge and Titletown Five) and Bob Baffert (Govenor Charlie); the jockeys are Gary Stevens (Oxbow), Mike Smith (Will Take Charge) and John Velazquez (Itsmyluckyday).

9. THE GREATEST. The fastest Preakness was run by 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat. Big Red won in 1:53. By comparison, last year’s winner I’ll Have Another won in 1:55.94. For those looking ahead, Secretariat also has the record for the Belmont, covering the 1½ miles in 2:24. The second-fastest time is 2:26 by Easy Goer in 1989 and A.P. Indy in 1992. Union Rags won last year in 2:30.42.

10. THE DISAPPOINTMENTS. If Orb wins the Preakness, he will become the ninth horse since Silver Charm in 1997 to have a chance at the Triple Crown. The others who missed after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness were (Real Quiet, 1998), Charismatic (1999), War Emblem (2002), Funny Cide (2003), Smarty Jones (2004), Big Brown (2008) and I’ll Have Another (2012), who never made the race because of an injury.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police say 13-year-old boy was killed in a ATV accident Saturday morning in Philadelphia.

The incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on the 5900 block of Elmwood Avenue.

According to police, the unidentified 13-year-old was seen weaving in and out of traffic while traveling east on Elmwood Avenue.

Investigators say the teen lost control of the ATV and hit a pole and tree after being ejected from the vehicle.

The victim was pronounced upon arrival at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

After hours of legislative hearings on the tests this week, top Republicans in the GOP-controlled Legislature are trying to figure out what to do about the criticism.

“We are now running into bumps in the road very quickly that we didn’t anticipate,” House Education Committee Chairman Paul Clymer, R-Bucks, said Wednesday after listening in on a Senate committee hearing.

Senate Education Committee Chairman Mike Folmer, R-Lebanon, seemed similarly surprised by the criticism, which came from teachers’ unions to conservatives who back public school alternatives. His office, he said, had received a deluge of requests from people wanting to testify.

“It took on a life of its own,” Folmer said.

After months of public meetings, a new set of proposed academic standards in math and English were approved in March by the State Board of Education, which is dominated by the governor’s appointees. The proposed Pennsylvania Common Core standards are currently in Corbett’s office undergoing a policy and cost review before they are to be sent in the coming weeks to a five-member state government regulations board whose approval is necessary before they can take effect.

Under the proposal, public school students in the 2016-17 school year must pass a set of three course-specific exams — algebra, biology and English literature — to graduate. Typically, most students complete the three courses between 8th and 10th grades, so a student who fails one or more has time to retake them or complete projects to show that they understand the subject, Department of Education spokesman Tim Eller said.

The Republican governor proposed the concept last year, Eller said. Many other states are adopting Common Core standards and associated graduation tests as a way to create a uniform educational experience for American children and better prepare them for the world.

The Pennsylvania Common Core standards are designed to meld the toughest parts of the existing, 14-year-old standards with the toughest elements from a set of the uniform Common Core standards that take effect in Pennsylvania on July 1.

The rising criticism of the standards and tests in Pennsylvania reflects a debate that is ratcheting up, both nationally and in various states.

Some Democratic lawmakers and public school administrators question the wisdom of requiring a graduation test in poorer school districts that struggle to afford smaller class sizes, updated instructional materials, tutors and counselors.

“You’re going to hold students accountable when they may not have all the support and opportunities to learn that are necessary in order to pass these tests,” said Jim Buckheit of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators. “These are fairly rigorous, high-level tests and you have struggling school districts, like in Philadelphia, where the only people who will be in schools are the principals and teachers and no one else.”

Teachers’ unions worry what it will mean under the state’s new teacher evaluation standards when waves of schoolchildren begin failing the tests, as is expected. The new evaluation standards count student test performance, and the exams — called Keystone Exams — are being administered for the first time this year, although they won’t be tied to graduation success until the 2016-17 school year.

Conservatives have different concerns. Common Core standards, they say, are stamping out local control of education, because they were developed by non-government associations of governors and state education officials and are being encouraged by President Barack Obama.

Senate Democrats want the graduation tests stopped, saying state law does not authorize their use. The Legislature can stop the proposed standards if a joint resolution passes both the House and Senate and Corbett agrees.

But many lawmakers are just beginning to grasp the subject, and Clymer and Folmer aren’t sure what their next step will be.

“That is a very good question,” Clymer said.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A former Philadelphia police officer, once hailed as a hero, has been arrested and charged with raping two women.

According to police, Richard DeCoatsworth was at a party at a confidential location and came in contact with the two women at about 2 a.m. Thursday.

Police say at the end of the party the two women left with DeCoatsworth, who took them to another private location.

Allegedly, at the second location, DeCoatsworth pulled out a handgun and forced the two women to use drugs and perform sexual acts.

Investigators say when the suspect left the women called police to report what had happened to them.

Police say DeCoastworth was arrested Saturday morning at his Port Richmond home and charged with sexual assault, rape, terroristic threats and related charges.

He was arraigned Saturday night.

DeCoatsworth rose to acclaim as a rookie in 2007 when he took a shotgun blast to the face during a car stop, but still managed to chase down suspects as they fled. He was honored and invited to President Obama’s inaugural address in 2009 where he sat with Michelle Obama.

He retired from the force in 2011 following an incident where he was accused of using excessive force for shooting a motorcyclist in the leg (see related story).

In 2012, DeCoatsworth was taken to court by a neighbor who said he was threatened by the suspect and feared for his and his mother’s life (see related story).

He is being held on $60 million bail.

DeCoatsworth is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing next month.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in New Jersey on Friday was $3.39, up 3 cents from last week. But that’s still much lower than the price from a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.64.

The increase marks the third straight week that pump prices have risen in New Jersey.

Meanwhile, the national average price rose by 6 cents to $3.62. That’s still lower than the national average from a year ago, when motorists were paying $3.72.

Analysts say the rising prices are due to higher crude oil prices and positive domestic economic news.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Archbishop Charles Chaput ordained three new priests at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul Saturday morning.

“Relying on the help of the lord God, and of our savior Jesus Christ, we choose these men,our brothers, for the order of the priesthood,” said Chaput.

Sean Loomis, John Patrick Stokely and Thomas Viviano completed their studies at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood and are now the newest servants of the Catholic Church.

Archbishop Chaput says the young men may not feel different than they felt last week but they will be treated differently for the rest of their lives.

“So my dear brothers, when you go forth from this day, as Saint Paul says, be ambassadors of Christ as if God were appealing through you,” Chaput told them.

All three newly ordained priests will be assigned to a parish in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia where they will serve as parochial vicars, assistants to the pastor.

The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. Saturday on Kelly Drive at Falls Bridge in Philadelphia.

Two people were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in an unknown condition.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

The crash is being investigated.

An employee at a Starbucks in Philadelphia is credited with recognizing 24-year-old Caleb “Kai” McGillvary, whose fledgling celebrity took a turn toward notoriety when authorities announced this week that he was wanted in the beating death of a New Jersey lawyer three times his age.

The unlikely pair met amid the neon lights of New York City’s Times Square over the weekend and headed back to the squat brick home of 73-year-old Joseph Galfy Jr. on a quiet cul-de-sac in suburban Clark, N.J., authorities say. On Monday, Galfy was found beaten to death in his bedroom, wearing only his socks and underwear. McGillvary was arrested Thursday shortly after leaving the Starbucks and charged with killing Galfy.

McGillvary gained a measure of fame in February after intervening in an attack on a California utility worker. In an interview viewed millions of times online, he described using a hatchet he was carrying to repeatedly hit a man who had struck a worker with his car, fending off a further attack, and thus became known as “Kai the hatchet-wielding hitchhiker.”

Galfy’s funeral was held Friday in a small stone chapel in Warren, N.J. He was buried in East Hanover.

Galfy was an “excellent land use attorney,” said friend Robert Ellenport. He said Galfy loved to travel and was a fan of the New York Giants and the Seton Hall University basketball team. Galfy would fly to warmer climes to watch Seton Hall play its first games of the season and was urging Ellenport and his partner to travel to Bali, one of Galfy’s favorite vacation spots.

The victim’s sister-in-law, Diane Galfy, said at her home that “he was a very well-respected man. That’s what we want people to know,” she said. She said her husband didn’t want to talk and her children were devastated.

Galfy was a respected lawyer who in recent years handled land use and domestic violence cases, according to Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow, whose office is prosecuting McGillvary. The two knew each other through legal circles.

“He was just a nice man, a gentle man, well-regarded in the community,” Romankow said.

In addition to his law practice, Galfy was the attorney for the planning board in Green Brook, N.J., and played drums in a wedding band.

Authorities said McGillvary was arrested Thursday evening after he walked into a Starbucks near a bus station in downtown Philadelphia and ordered two coffees. The woman who served McGillvary recognized him and alerted her manager, who called the police.

McGillvary took off before police arrived, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said, and without his coffee. But an officer went to a nearby bus terminal and found McGillvary, who was arrested there.

“He wasn’t lying low,” Romankow said. “He was out there.”

McGillvary was arraigned Friday and being held without bail on charges in Galfy’s killing, though a court official said he has a U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement detainer for three arrests in Canada in recent years.

Spokesman Harold Orb told The Associated Press in a statement late Friday that ICE has lodged a detainer against McGillvary.

“Once charges are fully adjudicated, he will be turned over to ICE and placed in removal proceedings,” Orb said.

ICE officials did not immediately return a request to confirm the detainer. It’s not clear whether McGillvary would be deported rather than sent to New Jersey to face prosecution in Galfy’s death.

Romankow said that McGillvary, who said in his TV appearance he prefers to be called “home-free” instead of homeless, traded on his newfound prominence to meet fans across the country.

Those fans include Terry Ratliff, 32, of Kingsland, Ga., who said he spoke to McGillvary a few times recently about working on music with him. Ratliff said he made about $70 from a YouTube video featuring McGillvary and sent him $34 on May 8. Ratliff said McGillvary was in New York at the time.

The two haven’t met, but Ratliff started a fund for McGillvary’s legal defense that has only raised $66 so far. It’s not clear whether McGillvary has a lawyer, and the public defender’s office in Philadelphia had no record of him.

“If he is telling the truth, then maybe better legal representation will help get that truth out,” Ratliff said.

McGillvary has made statements before, though, that don’t add up.

He has said he is from Sophia, W.Va., but Mayor Danny Barr said Friday that he and the fire chief know everyone in the town of 1,334, have never heard of him and found nothing about him in town records.

McGillvary also wrote statements on Facebook following Galfy’s death that were “sexual in nature,” Romankow said, and noted that they could have been self-serving.

McGillvary’s last post, dated Tuesday, asks “what would you do?” if you awoke in a stranger’s house and found you’d been drugged and sexually assaulted. One commenter suggests hitting him with a hatchet, and McGillvary’s final comment on the post says, “I like your idea.”

Ratliff says he is the commenter McGillvary was responding to. He said he had sent McGillvary an email the night before the post saying he had a song idea for him. Ratliff says when McGillvary responded with “I like your idea,” on Facebook, Ratliff wasn’t sure if McGillvary was referring to his email about music or suggestion to beat up the man.

It was a hatchet that helped give McGillvary a brief taste of fame in February when he gave a rambling, profanity-laced interview to a Fresno, Calif., television station about thwarting an unprovoked attack on a Pacific Gas & Electric employee. The interview went viral, with one version viewed more than 3.9 million times on YouTube. McGillvary later traveled to Los Angeles to appear on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

Noting that his photo had been all over, Ramsey said it apparently wasn’t difficult to recognize McGillvary.

“Being on YouTube too much,” the police commissioner said, “is not always a good thing.”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Saturday nights Powerball drawing for $600 million will be the largest in the game’s history, and the second-largest lottery jackpot of all-time.

This comes a day after two tickets, one sold in New Jersey, hit the $190 million dollar Mega Millions jackpot (see related story).

These giant prizes have many players dreaming big and local lottery officials excited for an economic boost.

Pennsylvania lottery President Todd Rucci says during this latest Powerball run beginning April 3rd, they’ve taken in about $25 million in Powerball revenue on top of money from state-only games.

And with 30 cents of every dollar going to older Pennsylvanians, Rucci says the benefits are all too real.

“Property tax and rent rebates for folks, our area agencies on aging for senior citizens, free and reduced fair share rides, low cost prescription drugs like PACE and PACENET and long-term living services also,” Rucci explains.

In New Jersey, education, human services and military and veterans affairs get a jolt. Last year the state took in nearly $1 billion for those programs from the lottery alone.

But even with all of that, lottery officials like Rucci still ask players to not go overboard, spending only what they can afford.

“It’s fun and exciting but you only need one ticket to throw your hat in the mix here,” he says.

US Airways spokesman Davien Anderson tells The Associated Press that a turboprop plane that left Philadelphia shortly before 11 p.m. Friday landed safely at Newark with its landing gear retracted at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

Anderson said the flight, being operated by Piedmont Airlines, was carrying 31 passengers and three crew members. He says the plane circled Newark in a holding pattern while working to get the gear down. After several failed attempts to get the gear down, the plane landed on its belly.

Anderson says the passengers were evacuated to the terminal by bus. He says US Airways is cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Saturday marks the last day for festivities at the 2nd Annual Love Your Park Week, but there are still plenty of activities going on at more than 25 parks.

Parks all across the city are offering free events that cater to all ages.

“There are bird walks. There are different hikes that are happening. There are some gardening workshops. There was even a mother-daughter beading workshop; really a lot of environmental things, but also around healthy eating and active living as well,” says Kathryn Ott-Lovell, the executive director of the Fairmount Park Conservancy.

Lovell says the main purpose of this week is to help people understand the importance of parks and how they contribute to the economic and community developments of neighborhoods.

The first incident occurred around midnight on the 5300 block of Hazelhurst Street.

According to police, a 20-year-old man was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and torso. Police say the suspects, three black males wearing hoodies, fled on foot east on Hazelhurst Street and then south on 54th Street to Berks Street.

The second incident happened at about 2 a.m. on the 5100 block of North 2nd Street.

Police say one man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to Einstein Medical Center.

There have been no arrests in either incident. Police are investigating.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - This week marks the 175th anniversary of the malicious burning of Pennsylvania Hall. It was an abolitionist meeting place set ablaze just three days after it opened.

Pennsylvania Hall was built in 1838 by the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society, a group of abolitionists openly fighting slavery. In years prior, the number of African Americans in Philadelphia increased as free and fugitive slaves flocked to the city and teamed up with Quaker abolitionists. The society’s support spread and they raised $40,000 to build the elaborate hall, which opened in May 1883.

“Three days after Pennsylvania Hall opened up, racist thugs burned it down on May 17, 1838,” says Michael Coard, founder of Avenging the Ancestors Coalition. The group commemorated the anniversary at the former home of the Hall at 6th and Race Streets.

“To add insult to injury, firemen who came here, instead of turning hoses onto Pennsylvania Houses to douse it, they turned it on nearby houses to protect the houses,” says Coard. “And then when the few firemen came along that did want to put the fire out at Pennsylvania Hall, the other fire company turned their hoses onto those fireman.”

And the Hall burned to the ground. Years later, Coard and his group says Philadelphia must remember its history.

“It’s extremely important for this story to be told or we’ll be destined to repeat it,” he says.

“I can’t believe that something that was so big and important that happened right here in Center City has alluded me for so many years,” says Taifa Ebony, a Philadelphia native. She says she was shocked when she learned of the Hall’s history.

“We need to learn that just because someone’s position is different from yours, you do not need to thwart what they are doing,” says Ebony.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – At 8:30 a.m. Sunday an emergency drill will take place at the SEPTA Fairmount Station of the Broad Street Subway underground.

SEPTA’s Jerry Williams says the drill is designed to see how prepared emergency responders are for a possible terroristic attack.

“There’s going to be a simulated explosion on the SEPTA subway line and the purpose of the drill is to give first responders and SEPTA a chance to coordinate their response to an emergency,” Williams explains.

It will also see how those personnel attend to suspicious bags and packages.

In addition to the first responders, Williams says about a hundred volunteer victims are taking part in the simulated blast.

SEPTA says anyone in the area around Broad and Fairmount should be expecting to see a lot of police and fire vehicles at that location, even though the drill will take place below ground.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A former South Philadelphia bank branch manager who talked and lied her way to a one day sentence in a half million dollar embezzlement case is now paying a steep price for her lies.

Thirty-one-year-old Katherine Harrell has now been sentenced to almost six years in prison for lying at the earlier sentencing. It was quite a tale of woe.

“She begged for leniency saying her parents were dead, that her brother was basically on hospice care, confined to a hospital bed in her home and that she had to feed him, change him, bathe him, and that if she were sentenced to jail he would go off to a nursing home where he would languish, and that her son would be forced into foster care,” says prosecutor Karen Grigsby.

A compelling story, but they were all lies.

And authorities say there were more lies after that.

The judge says he doesn’t think the defendant gets it and the message to her is committing crimes has consequences.

Lies helped set her free but authorities found out and now the convicted bank embezzler will pay a steep price.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – There was a time when “plastic” was the stuff of the future; remember the famous quote in the movie The Graduate? But one woman is turning back the clock.

Beth Terry says her world turned inside out a few years ago when she saw a news photo of a dead chick in the mid-Pacific, full of discarded household plastic, some of it perhaps hers.

“I hadn’t previously realized that my personal buying choices and the actions of what I was doing on a daily basis could have an effect on other creatures and right there in that moment I decided to see what it would be like to live without acquiring any new plastic,” she explains.

Terry says take it in stages. For example, no more plastic shopping bags, then get a reusable water bottle to replace all the plastic ones and even bring your own container for leftovers when you go out to eat.

Her book, Plastic Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too, details how she cut her plastic use from 1 1/2 pounds a week to 2 pounds a year.

Recycling is not a substitute, she says, because even making plastic involves toxic substances.

COATESVILLE, Pa. (CBS) – Pennsylvania recently reauthorized the use of grand juries to indict criminal defendants in certain circumstances, instead of going the traditional route of a preliminary hearing.

The option has only been used twice in the state: once in Philadelphia and now in Chester County.

Three men will stand trial for the murder of Dominique Williams during an armed robbery in Coatesville last year. Chester County DA Tom Hogan decided to use the new legal option out of an abundance of caution.

“This particular case met the definition where we are allowed to use the indicting grand jury. Specifically this was the type of case where there was either a threat of witness intimidation or a likelihood of witness intimidation,” Hogan explains.

He notes there’s been such intimidation in the past involving violent crimes in Coatesville.

Hogan believes the grand jury option will get more use statewide, not just from violent crimes like murder, but also in child abuse cases, particularly those within a family.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Free Library of Philadelphia has launched an ad campaign to try to attract people in their 20′s and 30′s.

“At the Free Library of Philadelphia, we’re search engineers,” is the message you might hear if you visit the music website Pandora, one of the places the library is going in pursuit of so-called Millennials.

They went to the library as kids and they are likely to go when they become parents but in between, they virtually disappear from the stacks and library spokeswoman Sandra Horrocks says the library wants them back.

“It’s really to make sure we continue to be connected with every new age group,” says Horrocks.

The library is working with the American Association of Advertising Agencies. Young Creative’s, with its ADLOOP arm, created the campaign pro bono.

Kate O’Neil says they used actual librarians who are in their 20′s.

“So it kind of showcases what the modern library is today through their actual employees,” says O’Neil.

The ads will run through June.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) – Officials in Montgomery County confirm the county is likely to take a $24-million financial hit related to a redevelopment project in Norristown that’s now in foreclosure.

The Logan Square project, which at one time included a movie studio, was supposed to be the cornerstone of the revitalization of the county seat. But six years after the project began the county now believes it’s no longer viable and it stands to lose millions in grant and loan guarantees put up by the previous administration.

Commissioner Josh Shapiro is concerned about future HUD investment in the county.

“Ten million of that is the HUD money. I’m going to do everything I can to mitigate the negative impact on the future of the county by meeting with Senator Casey, meeting with HUD and seeing what we can do,” says Shapiro.

One office building was constructed but it’s only half occupied and the center’s owners are having problems renting many stores on the retail side.
Foreclosure could take six to nine months.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – College graduation can be a joyous time for a family- maybe a bit stressful too – but for a young woman about to graduate from La Salle on Sunday there’s another big event ahead.

Kiara Smith hopes to go to law school, maybe as soon as this fall, but she’s not throwing herself at the LSAT immediately. Her father is facing a kidney transplant on May 28th and her mother is the donor.

Smith says her dad has been battling lupus for years. It attacked his kidneys so he’s on dialysis, but they didn’t have to look far for a donor match.

“She just got tested, just to see, and the results came back. They were found to be a match,” Smith explains.

Graduation looms, as does the transplant, but Smith is keeping things in perspective.

“I really do believe things will be fine. We grew up in the church, so did my parents, so we have faith in God that everything’s going to be OK,” she says.

Smith says she has kept herself busy with a double-major, an internship and being captain of the women’s tennis team.

RADNOR Twp., Pa., (CBS) – Officials say firefighters rescued a victim trapped inside of a house fire in Radnor Township Friday night.

The incident happened at about 8:10 p.m. on the 700 block of Miller Street.

Chopper 3 HD was over the scene as crews responded to the blaze.

The victim was medevaced to Temple University Hospital for treatment.  There is no word on the victim’s condition at this time.

The fire was placed under control at about 8:40 p.m.

No firefighters were injured during the blaze.

VINELAND, N.J., (CBS) – The victim’s daughter from a previous marriage lives in Vineland, New Jersey. She is outraged.

Loretta Burroughs, 61, openly sobbed in court on Friday when she was charged with the murder of her husband Daniel Burroughs (see previous story).

Loretta told police her husband ran off with his mistress six years ago, a story his devastated daughter never bought.

“To know that she’s kept him for six years is outrageous. It’s unbelievable. It’s indescribable, who does these things?” Carolyn Burroughs said.

Investigators returned to the Mays Landing home Loretta and Daniel shared when he disappeared in 2007.

They were looking for additional evidence.

Earlier on Friday, investigators searched Loretta’s current home in Ventnor.

That’s where authorities say they found the remains of 66-year-old Daniel Burroughs inside a closet.

He was stabbed to death.

“He was in her closet, really? The whole time she’s moved him from house to house? Why?” Carolyn Burroughs said.

Friends and family members of Daniel’s say a week or so after he was reported missing, Loretta tried selling his belongings, which made them suspicious.

“She said don’t worry about it, he’s not coming back,” Robert Valiante Sr. said.

“She put on the tears today and they are false. They’re tears of because now you know you are going to be in prison for the rest of your life. You got caught,” Valiante Sr. said.

Daniel’s family says police did investigate Daniel’s disappearance years ago, but the investigation stalled and the families push for answers went nowhere.

It was a tip from one of Daniel’s family members back in February that led investigators to reopen the case.

Loretta Burroughs has two prior convictions, one in Delaware County, Pa. for embezzlement and one for theft in New Jersey.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Most people dread the dentist, especially multiple visits to fix a problem.  Health Reporter Stephanie Stahl is On Your Side with a new high tech way to get problems fixed in hours, instead of days, with better accuracy.

Making a fake tooth look real, can be an ordeal and take forever.  Not anymore, and it’s a relief for Dawn Prunty.

“I have a cavity growing underneath a filling,” said Dawn.  She needs a crown.  In the past, there would have been multiple visits and weeks with an uncomfortable temporary tooth, waiting for a lab to make the permanent crown.

“You’re out of time, you’re out of money and you’re stuck with something you’re really not pleased with,” said Dawn.  So she’s turning to Dr. Leonard Tau, with the Pennsylvania Center for Dental Excellence.  He can do crowns in just a couple of hours, with the new CEREC Omnicam.

“This enables me to take a tooth, prepare it, design it on the computer, mill it in my own office, stain and glaze it and deliver it in the same two-hour visit,” said Dr. Tau.

Using a special color camera, Dr. Tau scans the tooth that needs repair, creating  a 3-D digital impression.  Then he designs the crown on the computer.

“That crown is then sent electronically to our milling device where the block is basically milled in usually about ten to fifteen minutes,” said Dr. Tau.

The new ceramic crown is then cemented in Dawn’s mouth.   This is all done within a couple of hours.

“I am really, really happy.  I am impressed.  We’re done,” said Dawn.

The new high-tech crown procedure Dr. Tau offers costs the same as a crown done in a lab, a little over $1500.  Insurance will typically cover a portion of the cost.

MIDDLETOWN, Pa., (CBS) –  An unwanted visitor roaming the streets of Bucks County.

A black bear has been spotted in Middletown Township, not once, but twice.

Residents are on the lookout.

“That’s about a 5-pound bear.   That’s huge.  We’ve never seen anything like that around here.  I’m here 40 years,” said Jay Kurko.

Police spotted the black bear twice Friday morning, but it wasn’t the first time.   Two days earlier he wandered through Jay’s yard.   He lives off Zimmerman Road and a neighbor took this photo.

“He has been here.  It’s a little scary,” said Kurko.

He says for the last couple weeks, neighbors have been hearing noises at night but they thought it was an intruder.   Turns out, it was.

“Now we all pretty much realize it was the bear.  It’s mating season.  This bear is out looking.  He doesn’t belong in this area,” said Kurko.

“The bear was right where you see the mulch,” said neighbor Paul Leinheiser.

A block away on Midway Avenue, Paul’s daughter came face to face with a bear earlier this week when she let the dog out.

“It galloped across Zimmerman and went to the woods.  It was huge,” said Leinheiser.

The neighborhood woke up to overturned trash cans and garbage and they knew he had come back.

“I have four little kids in the house and we all have pets around here. It needs to move on,” said Leinheiser.

The bear has been tagged twice already and may have been put back into the wild at least once.  Police are now working with the Pennsylvania Game Commission to find this bear.

People are urged not to approach the bear if you see him, but to call 911.

Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer and Cliff Lee threw seven sharp innings for the Phillies, who’ve won four of five.

Joey Votto hit a tying solo homer off Antonio Bastardo in the eighth, and Jay Bruce connected for a two-run shot for Cincinnati.

Lee gave up two runs and six hits, striking out seven. Justin De Fratus (2-0) got two batters out in the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon finished for his eighth save in eight tries.

Reds rookie starter Tony Cingrani allowed three runs and five hits in five innings.

After Cincinnati tied it in the eighth, the Phillies answered in the bottom half against Sean Marshall (0-1). Michael Young worked his third walk of the game with one out. Ryan Howard followed with a check-swing, infield single. Jonathan Broxton came in and hit Delmon Young to load the bases.

Brown then hit a grounder up the middle that shortstop Zack Cozart fielded on the second base side. Second baseman Brandon Phillips tried to barehand Cozart’s flip and dropped it for an error. Young crossed the plate with the go-ahead run and Howard scored on a headfirst dive on Carlos Ruiz’s sacrifice fly for a 5-3 lead.

The Reds closed to 3-2 when Bruce connected in the sixth after Phillips led off with a double.

They tied it when Votto took Bastardo deep to right-center leading off the eighth. Bastardo, who normally works the seventh, was pitching in the setup role because Mike Adams is day to day with a mid-back strain.

Bastardo left after Bruce hit a one-out single. De Fratus came in and nearly gave up a go-ahead extra-base hit to Todd Frazier, but right fielder Delmon Young made a leaping catch at the warning track.

Rollins blasted a 3-1 pitch out to left to put the Phillies up 2-0 in the third inning. He is batting .375 (9 for 24) in his last six games.

Lee, a good-hitting pitcher, helped himself with a leadoff double in the bottom of the fifth. Lee knocks balls out of the park routinely in batting practice, and just missed his third career homer when his drive to right bounced high off the wall. He hustled into second after trotting down the first-base line, and appeared slightly annoyed the ball didn’t go out.

Lee advanced to third on a sacrifice by Rollins and scored on Michael Young’s two-out triple to deep left-center for a 3-0 lead.

The Reds had chances in the first two innings, but couldn’t get a key hit. Lee stranded five runners, striking out Cozart to leaves the bases loaded in the second.

His son, Matt Venturi, said he died in a hospital in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Venturi had been hospitalized the last two months for a spinal infection, pneumonia, and then an intestinal infection that he could no longer fight.

Venturi died 12 days after he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

He couldn’t make it to the induction. His sons, Matt and Tim, accepted on his behalf after an emotional tribute by Jim Nantz, who worked alongside Venturi at CBS.

“When dad did receive the election into the Hall of Fame, he had a twinkle in his eye, and that twinkle is there every day,” Tim Venturi said that night.

Venturi was all about overcoming the odds.

A prominent amateur who grew up in San Francisco, he captured his only major in the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional, the last year the final round was 36 holes. In oppressive heat, Venturi showed signs of dehydration and a doctor recommended he stop playing because it could be fatal. Venturi pressed on to the finish, closed with a 70 and was heard to say, “My God, I’ve won the U.S. Open.”

He had a severe stuttering problem as a child, yet went on to become one of the familiar voices in golf broadcasting. He began working for CBS in 1968 and lasted 35 years.

“We all knew what a wonderful player Ken Venturi was, and how he fashioned a second successful career as an announcer,” Jack Nicklaus said. “But far more important than how good he was at playing the game or covering it, Ken was my friend. Ken was fortunate in that the game of golf gave him so much, but without question, Ken gave back far more to the game he loved than he ever gained from it. Over the years, Ken developed a circle of friends that is enormous and whose collective heart is heavy today.”

Venturi played on one Ryder Cup team and was U.S. captain in the 2000 Presidents Cup.

As an amateur, he was the 54-hole leader in the 1956 Masters until closing with an 80, and he was runner-up at Augusta National in 1960 to Arnold Palmer, who birdied the last two holes.

Venturi was born May 15, 1931, in San Francisco, and he developed his game at Harding Park Golf Course. He won the California State Amateur at Pebble Beach in 1951 and 1956, while serving in the Army in Korea between those two amateur titles.

His stammering problem is what led him to golf.

“When I was 13 years old, the teacher told my mother, ‘I’m sorry, Mrs. Venturi, but your son will never be able to speak. He’s an incurable stammerer,’” Venturi said in 2011. “My mother asked me what I planned to do. I said, ‘I’m taking up the loneliest sport I know,’ and picked up a set of hickory shaft across the street from a man and went to Harding Park and played my first round of golf.”

He turned pro after his close call in the 1956 Masters, and won his first PGA Tour at the St. Paul Open Invitational. Venturi won eight times over the next three years, including the Los Angeles Open and the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, before injuries started to affect his game after nearly winning the 1960 Masters.

He hurt his back in 1961 and badly injured his wrist in a car accident the next year. He missed the U.S. Open three straight years until he narrowly qualified for Congressional. It turned out to be an epic final day for the Californian coping with broiling heat.

Venturi shot 66 in the third round, but was feeling weak during the break before the final round that afternoon. John Everett, a doctor and member at Congressional, checked on him and found a normal pulse but symptoms of dehydration.

“Dr. Everett told me … I was lying next to my locker and he says, ‘I suggest that you don’t go out. It could be fatal,’” Venturi said in 2011 when he returned to Congressional for the U.S. Open. “I looked up at him and I said, ‘Well, it’s better than the way I’ve been living.’ And I got off the floor, and I do not remember walking to the first tee. I don’t remember the front nine until I started coming into it.”

Venturi was so shaken, so weak, when it was over that his final act was to sign the scorecard. He couldn’t even read the numbers. Joe Dey, the executive director of the USGA, looked over his shoulder, checked the scores and told him to sign it.

Sports Illustrated honored him as its “Sportsman of the Year” in 1964.

Venturi won three more times, his last win coming in 1966 at the Lucky International at Harding Park, where it all started.

He eventually developed Carpel Tunnel Syndrome in his hands and was forced to retire. That’s when he moved into the booth as the lead analyst for CBS Sports, and his voice filled living rooms for the next 35 years until he retired in 2002.

Venturi was elected to the Hall of Fame through the Lifetime Achievement category.

“If there is some sense of fairness, it is that Ken was inducted into a Hall of Fame that he very much deserved to be in and, in fact, should have been in for many years,” Nicklaus said. “While I know he was not able to be there in person for his induction, I am certain there was an overwhelming sense of pride and peace that embraced Ken. It was a dream of Ken Venturi’s that became a reality before he sadly left us.”

Venturi is survived his wife of 10 years, Kathleen, and his two sons. Matt Venturi said services were pending.

Sports vendors take it a step further, targeting women as customers. Just look at the broad range of products for women found in any retail store that sells team merchandise. Considering females comprise 45 percent of NFL fans and 43 percent of Major League Baseball fans, that’s smart business.

But women play an even greater role in sports, specifically in the past, present and future lives of athletes.

Troy Vincent, the NFL’s senior vice president of player engagement, says women are the most influential person in the athlete’s life cycle — from the first time a player steps on the field until retirement. And Vincent is working to recognize women for the important roles they play in the daily personal and professional lives of players and their families.

“Women are more than fans or consumers,” said Vincent, a five-time Pro bowl cornerback during a 15-year NFL career. “They’re our mothers. They’re our wives. They’re our daughters. They’re our sisters. They’re CEOs, entrepreneurs, influencers and decision makers. They’re extremely important to the NFL family.”

Vincent has developed the women’s resource initiative aimed at engaging wives, significant others and moms in areas of career, health and safety, wellness and lifestyle. The goal is to provide the tools and resources necessary to assist women and their families as they progress through an athlete’s career.

Vincent launched the campaign Friday on the NFL’s player engagement Web site at: www.nflplayerengagement.com/WRI. The site aims to connect women, share resources, promote service offerings, encourage peer-to-peer relationships, public appearances, private initiatives, and other opportunities.

“The women’s resource initiative is going to provide an outlet for women like me, it’s going to be a place where we are one,” said Bianca Wilfork, wife of New England Patriots five-time Pro Bowl nose tackle Vince Wilfork. “We can share, discuss, debate and empower each other. At the end of the day, our men give everything to their job and as their support system, whether you’re a wife, mom or girlfriend, you want to have the tools and the know-how and the support to be the woman you need to be in their lives.”

Bianca Wilfork says she handles everything in the household, which includes three children. She pays the bills, plans trips, appearances and speaking engagements and runs their foundation. She also goes to all her husband’s games home and away.

“When it comes to Vince, our family and his career,” she said, “I do everything except go to his meetings and suit up for football.”

Through the women’s resource initiative, Bianca Wilfork has a new forum to interact and perhaps even inspire other wives, significant others and moms.

“We want to ensure that our athletes and the women in their lives are informed and are able to access the resources, tools and benefits that are available to them, their family members and their local community,” Vincent said. “In most households, studies show the woman is the primary decision-maker and a key influencer, so we want a more formal and consistent platform to engage this audience.”

Rosenberg was 1-2 with a 6.12 ERA in 22 relief appearances for Philadelphia last season. He was 1-3 and had a 4.30 ERA in seven starts at Lehigh this season.

Valdes was 1-0 with a 7.65 ERA in 10 appearances out of the bullpen.
