PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Fire officials are investigating a fatal four alarm fire at a Camden Apartment complex this morning. Authorities say it left a 22-month-old boy dead.

“I heard a big boom,” said Glenda Ransom, who has called the complex home for 15 years. “I’m just glad I made it out alive.”

Others weren’t so lucky, like the family living on the second floor of the child who was killed.

Lakheera Moore lives right across the street from the Gramercy Park Apartments on the 2800 block of Hull Road.

“I woke up, looked out the window and saw flames spreading from the beginning of the apartment all the way to the end, like really huge flames,” she said.

It was 2 a.m. when fire fighters responded, getting people out and battling the flames. Camden Fire Chief Michael Harper says there was one young fatality, a boy.

“The guys did bring out a 22-month-old. Transported him to the hospital; Our Lady of Lourdes I think he was treated at.”

Harper says five others were injured, including the child’s mother, father and 4-month-old sibling. Two others were also taken to area hospitals, though it’s unclear if they were related. Their conditions have not been released.

The Fire Marshal is investigating what caused this deadly blaze that destroyed eight units. The Red Cross is helping those displaced.

The Celtics will open the third round of the NBA playoffs in Miami against the Heat on Monday night.
Rondo scored nine straight Boston points, helping the Celtics turn a three-point edge into a double-digit lead after Paul Pierce fouled out with 4:16 left in the game.

Andre Iguodala scored 18 points, and Elton Brand and Jrue Holiday had 15 apiece for the 76ers, who eliminated the top-seeded Chicago Bulls in the first round but couldn’t do the same with the Celtics.
Kevin Garnett had 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Ray Allen hit a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers after missing his first five attempts. Pierce had 15 points and nine rebounds before fouling out.

That’s when Rondo took over.

The point guard, rebounding from his worst performance of the playoffs in Game 6, scored on a baseline drive and followed it up with a long 2-pointer (originally scored a 3) with 2:47 left. Then he made a 3-pointer with a little more than 2 minutes left to make it a 10-pont game and, after Brand scored on a tip-in, Rondo went to the line as the crowd chanted “M-V-P! M-V-P!” and hit a pair of free throws to
leave Boston with an 80-70 lead with 1:44 left.

The Celtics will now face the actual NBA MVP — LeBron James — along with Dwyane Wade and the rest of the Heat. Miami advanced to the conference finals by eliminating the Indiana Pacers in six games.

Miami beat Boston in five games in the conference semifinals last year. In 2010, the Celtics eliminated the Heat in the first round and then knocked James and the Cavaliers out in the second — his final game with Cleveland before defecting to Miami.

Philadelphia had one last chance to cut the deficit with 100 seconds to play after Holiday made a 3-pointer to cut it to seven points. Pierce was left with nothing to do but cheerlead, waving his arms to encourage the crowd as Garnett went to the line with just under a minute left.

He made one of two, but Holiday lost the ball on the way to the basket and Rondo made a pair of free throws with 54 seconds left and then Allen, who had just three points to that point after missing his first 5 attempts from 3-point range, made a pair as the crowd chanted “Beat the Heat!”

Jodie Meeks’ 3-pointer rimmed out, the ball bounced to the floor and Rondo got his hands on it for his 10th rebound. He chucked it over his head into the frontcourt, where the Celtics dribbled down the 24-second clock.

Pierce picked up two fouls seven seconds apart with about 8 minutes to play, then his fifth with 5:16 left. Coach Doc Rivers left him in, and Pierce picked up No. 6 a minute later — a charging call against Thaddeus Young out by the free throw line;.

Boston got off to a fast start, taking a 10-2 lead thanks to four assists and two rebounds from Rondo in the first 3 minutes. The Sixers tied it before the end of the quarter, but the Celtics again pulled ahead and took a 41-33 lead into the half.

The lead grew to 11 before the Sixers scored seven straight points and then, trailing 53-45, they scored another seven in a row to cut the deficit to a point. Garnett made a high floater at the buzzer to give Boston a 55-52 lead at the end of three quarters.

At about 5:30 p.m., Coast Guard watchstanders received a report from a man named Jason Barnes that his friend, Thomas McCabe, went overboard and needed assistance.

A small crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May arrived on scene and transported McCabe back to the station.
Authorities say he refused medical treatment.

Staying with his kayak and wearing his life jacket aided in McCabe’s survival, according to Coast Guard officials.

Shane Victorino’s RBI double in the fourth was the only support Kendrick (1-4) needed and John Mayberry added a two-run double in a three-run sixth. Hunter Pence and Brian Schneider added two hits apiece for the Phillies, who have won four in a row.

Kendrick entered with a 5.23 ERA and the Phillies were 1-9 in the games he pitched, five of them starts. But he’s 5-1 against the Cardinals in eight games, all but two of them starts.

Jaime Garcia (3-3) allowed four runs on six hits in six innings for the Cardinals, who swept a three-game series against the Padres before hitting the wall against the team they upset in the NL Division Series last fall.

David Freese had two singles and is 7 for 7 with two homers and four RBIs for St. Louis since returning from a two-game break to clear his head from a 3 for 34 slump.

The Cardinals were shut out for the first time at home. Their lone highlight was left fielder Matt Holliday’s leaping catch at the wall to rob Jimmy Rollins of a leadoff homer in the first.
They haven’t been swept in a four-game series at home by the Phillies since Aug. 4-7, 1986, and even in three-game series they haven’t been swept since 2001.

Kendrick needed just 94 pitches, 70 of them strikes, to throw his second career complete game and first since July 3, 2010, at Pittsburgh. He worked ahead in the count constantly, throwing first-pitch strikes to the first 13 batters, and had four strikeouts with no walks.

Kendrick pitched a season-high seven innings in his last start, a 2-1 loss to the Nationals on May 21. He allowed three or fewer runs for the 14th time in 15 starts.

The Phillies totaled just five runs while Kendrick was in the game his other five starts this season, an average of 1.67 runs that was the majors’ worst with a minimum of five starts.

The Cardinals got their first runner in scoring position when Tyler Greene doubled with two outs in the sixth, and Kendrick quickly escaped by getting Holliday to ground out.

Garcia retired seven of eight before the fourth, when Pence had a leadoff single and scored on Victorino’s double to put the Phillies ahead.

Placido Polanco doubled to start the sixth and Garcia walked two of the next three hitters before Mayberry doubled down the third base line. Mayberry had been 3 for 22 with one RBI against St. Louis, but with all three hits and the RBI in six at-bats against Garcia.

Garcia’s effectiveness was down from his previous two starts in which he gave up three runs in 14 1-3 innings.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The unofficial start to summer will feel like mid summer this weekend with a hot and humid weather pattern in place.

High temperatures average in the upper 70s this time of year but will be a good 10+ degrees above the average through Memorial Day. There will be some showers and storm chances as a lingering frontal boundary and high heat and humidity will help trigger and fuel some storms each afternoon.

The front will remain north of Philadelphia and it triggered a line of strong storms Saturday night, north of the city. These storms will diminish Saturday evening, but the threat for a shower or storm (mainly north of Phila.) will return Sunday as the front still lingers to our north.

Highs on Sunday will be in the mid to upper 80s. Memorial Day looks very hot and humid with highs near 90 but the humidity will make it feel like well in the mid 90s. An excessive heat watch is issued for Monday afternoon through Tuesday night. There will be a chance for a shower or storm on Monday but not as high as Sunday.

Better chances for showers and storms will arrive on Tuesday as a cold front slides through the region. The forecast should remain dry at the shore but with cool ocean water temps in the 60s, afternoon highs in the mid-upper 70s through Memorial Day.

Nick Soolsma outmuscled a Union defender in the box and fed the ball to Koevermans at the near post. The big Dutch striker’s first attempt bounced off goalie Chris Konopka, but he scored on with his second try.

Koevermans came into the game in the 62nd minute, his third substitute appearances in four games since returning from a groin injury.

Toronto entered the game off a win against the Vancouver Whitecaps that game the club a fourth straight Voyageurs Cup as Canadian champion. Toronto has a three-week break due to the next round of World Cup qualifiers.

Philadelphia played without goalie Zac MacMath (concussion symptoms) and Chase Harrison (ankle sprain).

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) - Police in Camden are investigating the stabbing death of a 22-year-old woman Friday night.

Police say Sophia Ortiz died while in surgery at Cooper University Hospital after she was stabbed in her apartment on the 400 block of Boyd Street a little after 11 p.m.

Authorities took into custody Saturday 24-year-old Julio Martinez, of the 200 block of Baldwin’s Run in Camden, and charged him with murder. Police say Martinez, who is the father of Ortiz’s children, allegedly broke into the apartment through a second story window, kicked open the door to a bedroom where Ortiz and others in the apartment were hiding and stabbed her with a knife.

He is being held in the Camden County Jail and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Political and Military leaders in Camden County Saturday dedicated a portion of Harleigh Cemetery as hallowed grounds, a place where veterans will be buried.

“It’s peaceful, it’s down here by the river…birds are chirping.”

Decorated Navy Admiral William Fallon, who grew up just down the street, says this hill didn’t always look this way.

“Fifty years ago, it was pretty gnarly. It wasn’t very pretty. And I suspect it wasn’t very pretty recently. But now, they’ve done a wonderful job. They’ve cleared it out. It’s a beautiful site.”

One of the men who made this possible is Freeholder Ed McDonnell. He waited four years for this ceremony.

“We went into this with the purpose of doing the right thing for these veterans, who so deserve it.”

A portion of Kaighn Avenue is now named in honor of Admiral Fallon, who was surprised and honored by the announcement.

Health officials made the announcement Friday and said no one was bitten by the animal. One person was suspected of having come into contact with the animal and will get a series of four vaccinations.

Health officials say the raccoon is the fifth animal that has tested positive for the disease this year. That’s one shy of the number of animals that tested positive for the disease in 2011.

Health officials say people should not feed or approach wild or stray animals because they may be infected.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Prosecutors have filed a brief in response to Jerry Sandusky’s motion to have charges against him dismissed.

Sandusky’s lawyer filed a motion seeking to have charges dismissed, saying some charges were too vague in terms of dates and locations, while others lacked evidence to support them.

In their response, prosecutors say they are unaware of any authority for the kind pretrial “specificity of charges” demanded by the defense. And they say the court cannot weigh the sufficiency of evidence that has not been presented in court.

This is the second time the Commonwealth has filed a brief on this issue. Earlier this year, the judge ruled that a defense motion to dismiss charges was premature.

A hearing on unresolved pretrial issues is scheduled next week, and jury selection is scheduled to begin the week after that.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The memory of missing the playoffs for first time since 1996 and the ghost of an 18-year-old wound were wiped out with a sweep of rookie Adam Henrique’s stick.

The New Jersey Devils are going back to the Stanley Cup finals, thanks to Henrique, a 40-year-old goaltender and a coach who’d never been to the postseason in the NHL.

How’s that for a turnaround?

Henrique scored off a wild scramble in front at 1:03 into overtime and the Devils defeated the rival New York Rangers, 3-2, in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals to advance to their first Stanley Cup finals since 2003.

“It means a lot,” Devils leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk said minutes after reaching the Cup finals for the first time. “It’s a great feeling. Last year was a tough one, but this year was totally different. We played well all year. The first round of the playoffs was a little tough but after that, I think we figured out our game and what it takes to win.”

After beating Florida, Philadelphia and their biggest rivals, the Rangers, only the Los Angeles Kings stand in the way of a fourth Cup for New Jersey.

The title round begins here Wednesday.

This series win came against the Devils’ most intense rival, and it was that much sweeter.

“That one was like Christmas,” said Henrique, who also scored the series winner in overtime as Devils’ first-round, Game 7 win over the Panthers.

It also was needed. The Devils blew a 2-0 first-period lead and didn’t want to head back to New York for a Game 7 on Sunday.

“It didn’t matter how it got to overtime, we were in a good position,” Devils captain Zach Parise said. “We were at home. We just needed one shot.”

Actually, the Devils needed four shots to win the game.

Henrique’s winner came after Henrik Lundqvist stopped Kovalchuk twice and Alexei Ponikarovsky. The last shot lay in the crease and Henrique tapped it home.

“We caught them on a line change and their defensemen were tired,” said Devils coach Peter DeBoer, who was fired by Florida after missing the playoffs in his three seasons. “We found a way to jam one in. That’s the only way you’re going to score on Lundqvist. You’re not going to get a clean one. You’re going to have to work for it around the net.

“And that’s what we did.”

Ryan Carter and Kovalchuk also scored for the Devils, whose biggest move this year was hiring DeBoer. He has more than proved his coaching ability.

Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Callahan tallied for top-seeded New York, which had a good flurry just before New Jersey scored to end it.

Henrique, who is nominated for the Calder Trophy — given to the NHL’s top rookie — skated away from the crease and jumped against the end boards in the corner as his teammates hopped off the bench and mobbed him.

The six Rangers on the ice just stayed down in disbelief and frustration. This was very much like Game 5, which the Devils won 5-3. New York carried the play after the first period and had a 35-29 edge in shots.

But when it came time for a game-deciding play to be made, it was a Devil who made it.

“When they scored, it was such an empty feeling,” said Lundqvist, who said the puck took a weird bounce on the final play. “It is shocking.”

Henrique overcame injury to score this one. He seemed to take a stick from Brian Boyle in the groin area late in the third and had to leave the ice.

He felt no pain after the game winner.

All the Rangers could do was bow their heads and then line up for the traditional handshake after losing to their cross-rival rivals in a series that was close.

“That’s playoff hockey, and that’s usually where you get an overtime goal,” Rangers veteran Brandon Prust said. “Just whacking away in front of the net, getting rebounds.”

Martin Brodeur, 40, kept the Devils alive in the third. He stopped a power-play shot by Brad Richards, made a save on Artem Anisimov between the circles and used his stick to deflect a pass from the boards by Carl Hagelin in the final minute just before it got to Marian Gaborik on the edge of the crease.

“You could tell he was in the zone. He led us,” Parise said. “He made some big saves tonight.”

Lundqvist’s best stop in the third was on Dainius Zubrus on a shot from behind the circles.

Facing elimination and down 2-0 after 20 minutes, the Rangers found their game in the second period and tied the game at 2-all on goals by Fedotenko and Callahan in a roughly four-minute span.

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who assisted on both goals, made the big play to get New York back in the game. He collected the puck above the left circle, skated around the net and tried a wrap around. The shot didn’t go on goal but it turned out to be a perfect pass to Fedotenko who a tap-in into an open net at 9:47.

Callahan, who had a New York goal go off his leg in the Devils’ 5-3 win on Wednesday, tied the game at 13:41 when Dan Girardi’s shot from the right point deflected off his leg into the open lower corner of the net. Callahan’s sixth of the postseason was set up when Brandon Dubinsky won a faceoff in the left circle.

Carter, who scored the game winner in New York on Wednesday night after the Devils blew a 3-0 lead, put New Jersey ahead again at 10:05 of the opening period.

The play started with a bad pinch at the point by Rangers defenseman Marc Staal. Steve Bernier led a 3-on-1 and found Stephen Gionta coming down the middle for a solo chance against Lundqvist. The Rangers goaltender stopped the shot, but Carter swatted the rebound home for his fourth of the playoffs.

Kovalchuk’s seventh goal of the postseason and fifth on the power play was a thing of beauty. All five Devils skaters touched the puck with tape-to-tape passes with Zubrus finding Kovalchuk alone low in the left circle for a shot that Lundqvist had little chance to stop.

The Devils — as is the tradition for many Cup finalists — did not touch the Prince of Wales Trophy that was presented at center ice. As the team skated off to their locker room, “Glory Days,” the 1984 hit from New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen serenaded them.

The game was played on the 18-year anniversary of the Rangers’ dramatic, 4-2, Game 6 victory over New Jersey at the Meadowlands, a victory that pushed that classic Eastern Conference final series to a Game 7 and eventually led New York to its first Stanley Cup in 54 years. That game, of course, was preceded by a guarantee from Rangers captain Mark Messier, who delivered three goals en route to the victory.

This time, though, there will be no Game 7.

State Corrections Department Spokesman Matt Schuman says 21-year-old Corey Agostarola was taken into custody around 7 p.m. Friday in Pine Hill.

Schuman said Saturday that “detective work” by state authorities led to the capture. But he declined to provide further details on how or where Agostarola was found.

Agostarola and another inmate, 23-year-old Michael Bentley, were discovered missing from the Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility in Annandale on Sunday night.
Bentley remained on the lam as of late Saturday morning.

Agostarola was in custody on burglary and weapons charges, while Bentley was being held on theft and burglary charges.

The incident happened at 1:10 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Bankshots Bar at 106 Main Street in Stanton.

As patrons were standing outside the bar in a designated smoking area, a red or maroon Jeep pulled up and stopped in front of the business. The driver was told to leave, and he then exchanged words in Spanish with the people outside. The suspect then fired one round from a handgun, striking a 35-year-old man in the arm, before fleeing east on Route 4.

The victim was transported to Christiana Medical Center where he was admitted.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, 25-35 years of age, with short black hair, who was wearing a yellow t-shirt and was armed with a handgun.

The first incident occurred at the Metro Bank on State Hill Road around 7:48 a.m. The suspect reportedly handed the teller a note and stole an undetermined amount of cash. There was no weapon displayed.

The suspect in this robbery described as a white male in his mid-forties to early fifties, approximately 5’8” tall and 185 lbs, with short hair. He was wearing a gray t-shirt, gray pants, black sneakers and a white baseball cap.

The second incident happened at 11:58 a.m. at the Customers Bank on Woodland Road. The suspect walked into the bank and demanded money from the teller. No weapon was displayed. The suspect left the bank with an undetermined amount of cash.

This suspect is described as a black male in his 30’s with a heavy-set build. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, short and a baseball cap.

It is unknown if the two robberies are related.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Experts say it’s going to potentially be one the most severe flea and tick summers in some time due to the mild winter. And a local veterinarian stresses topical pet parasiticides meant for dogs can be fatal if used on cats.

The product is the spot on flea and tick preventatives in liquid form. It’s applied between the shoulder blades of dogs. But if put on a cat, it could be deadly; however there is a treatment says Philadelphia Animal hospital’s Dr. Lawrence Rebbecchi.

“We probably treat a cat weekly in that inadvertent application of that dog product on a cat and it starts with neurological signs but if caught early enough there is an antidote to the toxicity.”

The Environmental Protection Agency is suggesting manufacturers change the labels.

“Well the labeling is the warning not to use on cats is not obvious enough. Its very, very small so the EPA is asking the companies to make that image a lot larger so the clients are not buying that product and applying that product onto a cat.”

The EPA is involved because the treatments are categorized as pesticides not drugs.

No major problems were being reported as of late Saturday morning. But motorists were still being urged to allow extra travel times to reach their destinations.

Turnpike officials say southbound traffic is slow for about 10 miles in the area of the merge near interchanges 8 and 8A. Volume also was heavy in some spots along the Garden State Parkway, and southbound traffic is moving slowly for several miles between Tinton Falls and Lakewood.

BURLINGTON COUNTY, NJ (CBS) – Former New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow’s bid to become a judge in North Jersey has been withdrawn by the Christie Administration. Now, she’s been nominated for a judicial post in South Jersey. What’s up?

It could be politics at play, although Governor Chris Christie insists it’s a matter of a real estate transaction.

“She’s moving to Burlington County, and once she was moving to Burlington County, she couldn’t be a judge in Essex anymore,” Christie says.

And Christie insists Dow deserves to be on the bench. But there’s this reality to ponder: State senators in Essex County have been blocking the Governor’s nominees to Superior Court, creating a bit of a problem up there. That won’t be an issue in Burlington County, where state Senate members are Republicans.

And by the way, look for a political battle royal in Trenton, as Christie’s latest state Supreme Court nominee gets a senate hearing. Democrats in the Judiciary Committee are expressing doubts that Bruce Harris will be confirmed. Philip Kwon’s nomination was denied in the same committee in March.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — If you think the only math you need to know for sports is the score and the spread, think again.

Physics professor Aaron Santos calls it Ballparking, the title of his second book of applying math to some unusual pursuits.

“When I started playing hockey, I was always wondering, ‘Why doesn’t a team just take some really really fat guy and shove him in a goal, and just make sure nobody can get any pucks in because it’s just completely blocked?’”

The reason—and Santos shows you the equations—is that this goalie would weigh about five tons. And if you want to pole vault over the St. Louis Arch? You’d have to run 140 mph while carrying a pole that weighs more than 400 pounds.

Santos wants his readers to think of math as a problem-solving tool, even if the problem is off-the-wall. Santos has plans for a third book, on science fiction calculations, called The Math of Khan.

The crash happened Friday at around 7 p.m. Police say the driver of a 1999 BMW sedan struck an object in the roadway and slowed down. A driver traveling behind the BMW was unable to get out of the way and struck the car.

The driver of the BMW, his wife, and their 5-year-old daughter were taken to the hospital and treated, but their injuries were not life-threatening. A 9-year-old son who was also in the vehicle was not injured.

The driver, Mark Monteith of Philadelphia, was cited for impeding the flow of traffic.

The other driver and his 10-year-old son were also taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A little known community library in Montgomery County has been rejuvenated thanks to a multi-million dollar gift from philanthropists, who wanted to see the facility brought into the 21st century.

This is at a time when the future of libraries has been called into question.

Two years ago, Whitemarsh residents Nicholas and Athena Karabots offered more than $4 million to enlarge and update the Jeanes Memorial Library on Joshua Road. The two-story, 7,000 square foot addition includes a children’s wing, something Nicholas Karabots says was a key part of what they wanted.

“How can we build out the children when they are very young to get an interest in the library and get an interest in computers and the electronic age as we are now.”

Library board president Sydelle Zove says the generous gift turned a tired, quaint library into the 21st century building it is today.

“This is beautiful; this is wonderful. What a space (with) light filled rooms, plenty of space for community gatherings, groups of students who want to study together.”

It’s already begun to pay off with more people coming through the doors. The capital campaign is ongoing to help buy furniture and equipment.

Police say the crash happened at 1:18 a.m. Saturday when the woman and her boyfriend were working on her car, which may have been having a mechanical issue. Police say 24-year-old Evelyn Vilchez of Newark was standing alongside her car on Old Baltimore Pike when her boyfriend, Emmanuel Gonzalez, noticed a silver Jeep traveling in their direction. Gonzalez attempted to pull Vilchez out of the way, but the Jeep hit her car and then her. The Jeep then continued without stopping.

Vilchez was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Gonzalez was unharmed.

Police are looking for the silver Jeep.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A local non-profit honored nearly 150 Philadelphia high school students this week for their impeccable attendance this school year.

Be There! is a program that encourages students to make a commitment to attend school regularly.

”Students have not only been attending, but they’ve been active.”

Claudia Tucker-Keto is Executive Director of the Health Partners Foundation. She says rewarding students has a tremendous impact.

”Their grades have improved, their truancy and absenteeism has certainly decreased.”

Eighteen-year-old Chante Smith received a special award – she has not missed a day a school since kindergarten.

”In order to be successful you have to initiate it somehow and showing up to class saying, ‘Hey, I’m ready, I’m prepared’ is one of the first steps to doing that.”

Chante is the valedictorian of her class at Dobbins High School in Northwest Philadelphia. She will attend Howard University on scholarship in the fall.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – National Dog Bite Safety Week is wrapping up, but one local official says everyone can take precautions to make sure they don’t wind up included in next year’s statistics.

State Farm spokesperson Dave Phillips says unfortunately Pennsylvania is one of the top states in the country for dog bites.

“This year, Pennsylvania is number five up from number six. New Jersey has fared better though – they are number 16.”

“There’s no significant trending to show why the numbers vary but one thing that seems to come into play is whether there is more exposure to the dogs than previously, perhaps based on weather,” said Phillips.

Phillips says a dog bite is expensive. State Farm paid out $4.9 million in Pennsylvania in dog bite claims.

“Unfortunately there is quite a bit of damage that can occur, especially to the face. And this also includes cost for litigation and liability issues.”

Phillips says statistics show those most vulnerable to a bite are the elderly and children. He advises everyone to check to make sure your homeowners policy sufficiently covers you and your pet.

BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) - Upset and confused, a toddler was found wandering in a supermarket parking lot at 1 a.m. Friday.

Police later learned the boy and his brother were left home alone by their parents so they could gamble at the Parx casino in Bensalem.

Eyewitness News spoke to the Good Samaritan who found the child.

Robert Bannon explained, “I expected to see blood when I picked him up because it was like a blood curdling scream.”

Bannon, with a toddler nephew of his own, could not believe his eyes when he saw an unsupervised toddler running around the parking lot of the Giant store on 4001 New Falls Road.

Bannon said, “He looked scared to death. He was very scared. At first I was waiting to see a parent to start yelling at him because normally when you see kids running across, parents are a few feet behind yelling.”

But when that didn’t happen, Bannon immediately sprang into action.

“I told my girlfriend to call 911 and I ran across and got the kid, he was trying to get into Giant like he’s been there before.”

Bannon says police arrived within minutes and took over from there.

According to court documents, the 2-year-old boy could not speak but pointed in the direction of an apartment complex connected to the supermarket by a footbridge. Police eventually located the child’s home which turned out to be about the length of a football field away from where he was found.

“It shocked me,” Bannon reacted.

Shocked to learn the child’s 4-year-old brother was sleeping inside with their parents nowhere to found.

According to police, their investigation revealed that the children’s mother had texted her next door neighbor earlier:

“Hey, if we go to the casino around 11 or so can u listen for the boys they are sleeping right now.”

Followed by another text that read:

“Guess u are sleeping.”

Police say with help from that neighbor, they tracked down and arrested 24-year-old Nicole Donahue and 29-year-old Ryan Feyh. The two initially told police they were out running errands but later admitted they were at the Parx casino gambling.

The couple’s neighbor Crysta Farmer said, “He could have been hit by a car, he could have gotten kidnapped, he could be on a milk box by now.”

Another neighbor Geri Lerner added, “They seemed nice, they seemed like they got along. They seemed like they loved their children. I’m just so glad the boys are alright.”

Court documents stated the couple’s children are now in the custody of other family members. Donahue and Feyh were charged with Endangering Welfare of Children and Recklessly Endangering Another Person. Both were sent to jail unable to post bail.

The Phillies won their third in a row after surviving a fourth inning in which Pence, the right fielder, and Shane Victorino, the center fielder, lost balls in the lights. The winning runs came too late for Cliff Lee, a 17-game winner last season still seeking his first win of 2012.

Juan Pierre singled to start the 10th against Motte, working his second inning. Pence had been hitless in nine at-bats before lining the St. Louis closer’s first pitch over the right field wall for his team-leading 11th homer. He’s 3 for 10 against Motte (3-2) with two homers and three RBIs.

Raul Valdes (2-0), who hadn’t won a game since Sept. 15, 2010, before getting the decision in Thursday’s 10-9 victory, struck out Tyler Greene and Matt Holliday with two on in the ninth inning to win for the second straight game. Jonathan Papelbon finished for his National League-leading 14th save in 14 chances.

The Cardinals missed chances at the go-ahead hit in the seventh, eighth and ninth. Holliday flied out to the left field wall with a man on to end the seventh, Yadier Molina was thrown out trying to score from first on Matt Adams’ two-out double to the right-center gap in the eighth and Holliday struck out with two on to end the ninth, breaking his bat in frustration after slamming it off the plate.

Second baseman Freddy Galvis had a strong relay to the plate and Carlos Ruiz hung on after Molina crashed into him.

Lee’s, who’s 0-2 despite a 2.82 ERA, left after striking out seven in seven innings in a game tied at 3. Lee won 17 games last year, finishing third in the Cy Young balloting.

Cardinals starter Kyle Lohse had no walks or strikeouts for the second time in two seasons against the Phillies and against Lee, giving up three earned runs in 6 1-3 innings. He walked none in eight innings in a 4-0 loss at home to Philadelphia last June 22.

Lee, who got called third strikes on five of his strikeouts, barely survived the seventh, convincing manager Charlie Manuel to leave him in before Holliday’s flyout to the wall.

Lee singled for his second hit to start the seventh, and got a good jump on Pierre’s double off Mitchell Boggs with one out, scoring easily to tie it.

The Cardinals opened the fourth with four straight hits, two of them apparently lost in the lights. They scored only once, running into an out when Molina was caught trying for third after Adams’ popup dropped between equally bewildered Pence and Victorino for a gift hit.

David Freese started the inning with his third career triple, a drive off the top of the center field wall that Victorino couldn’t track, waving his arms while drifting back in the track. Molina’s single made it 3-2, but Victorino salvaged some wounded pride when he retrieved the ball after Adams’ single and threw out Molina at third.

Jimmy Rollins had an RBI single and another run scored on first baseman Adams’ fielding error as the Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the second. Adams and Shane Robinson had consecutive doubles in the bottom of the second and Furcal hit his third homer leading off the third to tie it.

Furcal, whose drive appeared to bang off a sign just above the left field wall, is 3 for 7 against Lee with two homers.

Lee has allowed three or fewer runs in all five of his career starts against St. Louis, two of them shutouts.

It happened on the 6600 block of Torresdale Avenue at about 9:30 p.m. Police say two men armed with handguns walked into the store and demanded money. They then reportedly sprayed a person with mace; police say that person is okay. There were no other reported injuries.

The suspects fled the scene. It’s not clear how much money was taken from the business.

Philadelphia Police are reviewing surveillance footage to help in the investigation.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — After a flood of TV advertising and a two-month preview period aimed more at working out glitches than showing off its full capabilities, Atlantic City’s newest casino resort is fully unpacked — and eager to show it can be a big moneymaker.

The $2.4 billion Revel, being counted on to help turn around Atlantic City’s five-year losing streak, is holding its grand opening — highlighted by four concerts by Beyonce, her first performances since having a baby in January.

“Rehearsal is over,” said CEO Kevin DeSanctis. “Now is when we need to generate revenue and do all the things we need to do to be successful.”

Hotel rooms that had been dark are now furnished and ready to rent. Restaurants that were still not quite ready now are.

Revel expects more than 100,000 people to come through its doors Friday through Monday. Many of those who had already done so, during a preview period that began with the casino’s opening April 2, came away impressed.

“It’s awesome, it’s gorgeous,” said Kristen Romano, 22, of Point Pleasant Beach, who was playing a “Sex
And The City” slot machine this week. “Every time I see something here, I want to take it home with me.”

Revel is marketing itself as a lifestyle resort, a vacation and meeting mecca that just happens to offer casino gambling as well. It’s in keeping with the new thinking in Atlantic City, the nation’s second-largest gambling market that has taken a pounding over the last five years from the recession and a slew of new casinos popping up all around it in neighboring states.

Gambling revenue has fallen from $5.2 billion in 2006 to $3.3 billion last year. Given that, Atlantic City is trying to remake itself into a place where gourmet restaurants, top-name concerts, spas and luxurious hotel rooms are just as important as slot machines and cards.

Revel also has to kick its finances into high gear. It won $13.4 million from gamblers in April, ranking it 8th out of Atlantic City’s 12 casinos.

DeSanctis said those numbers were compiled when Revel was much more focused on making sure systems, equipment and policies worked well. About 1,200 hotel rooms will be open as of the holiday weekend. When fully open later this year, it will have just under 1,900 rooms.

Revel also is Atlantic City’s only smoke-free casino resort; the other 11 allow smoking on 25 percent of the casino floor.

It also embraces the ocean rather than turning its back on it the way many of its competitors do. It makes more use of sunlight and sweeping views of the beach and ocean than the other eight Boardwalk casinos, which were designed to keep gamblers fixated on, well, gambling. Thoughts of wandering outside to smell the salt air were left to those whose money was gone.

But at Revel, you can see the ocean from at least part of the casino floor, a no-no in other places.
It has 2,450 slot machines and 160 table games. But gambling is only part of the business plan; Revel also has a luxurious spa, 14 restaurants, 10 pools, and a theater with 5,050 seats that has already hosted Maroon Five and The Black Keys. Upcoming shows include Kid Rock, Seal and Barry Manilow.

The project had to overcome a slew of difficulties to make it to the grand opening. It ran out of money halfway through before new financing could be found; state tax assistance helped push it across the finish line.

Three key executives working on the project died in a Minnesota plane crash in July 2008; a worker pouring concrete was struck by lightning and killed last September.

The casino also drew criticism for its policy, unique in Atlantic City, of limiting many customer service jobs to terms of four to six years, after which workers will have to re-apply. DeSanctis said the rule is to prevent workers from becoming apathetic and indifferent to the needs of Revel’s guests.

And unions have sparred with it for years. The Teamsters, the United Auto Workers, and Local 54 of the Unite HERE union have started a unionization drive at Revel, whose dealers, hotel workers, beverage servers and others are not represented by a union.

The AFL-CIO in New Jersey and Pennsylvania has called on the casino to let its workers decide as easily as possible whether to be represented by a union.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - No matter what happens in game seven tomorrow night, the Sixers have gone farther than anyone thought they would this season.

I’m not saying they are going to lose tomorrow, but you have to admit it’s going to be tough. Very tough. In the history of the NBA when a game seven is played the home team has won 80 percent of the time.

The series with the Celtics has been exciting to say the least. Game four was one of the greatest comebacks I’ve seen. The Sixers were down by 18 at one point and came back to win it. As Tom McGinnis would say “YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!”

This year’s Sixers remind me of the 2009-2010 Flyers. You didn’t expect them to get as far as they did. Every win was like an unexpected gift. Remember when they went to Boston to play a game seven and how that turned out?

The last time these two teams met in a game seven was in 1982. That year, the Sixers beat the Celtics.

Let’s hope history repeats itself tomorrow.

A combination of high temperatures near 90 degrees and a humid air mass that may produce heat index values nearing 100 degrees are projected. The heat alert will be in effect from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day. Residents are being asked to check on elderly neighbors who may be living alone.

Residents are urged to refrain from turning on fire hydrants. Opening or turning on fire hydrants is illegal and jeopardizes public safety because it lowers water pressure, according to the county health office.

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health is working with the hospital where the case was treated to identify and contact any individuals who may have been exposed to the virus which spreads easily through the air via coughs and sneezes.

Officials believe anyone who was at Barcade, a bar in the 1100 block of Frankford Avenue in Fishtown, on the evening of May 12th and the morning of May 13th may have been exposed to the virus.

Measles can result in a fever, rash, and a cough, runny nose and/or watery eyes. Those who are not immune to measles are highly susceptible to infection, officials say. People who were at Barcade during the aforementioned dates should monitor their health for measles signs and symptoms between now and May 31st .

If symptoms develop, individuals are encouraged to contact their doctor immediately and inform them of their measles exposure.

Health officials say most adults in the United States are protected from measles as a result of childhood measles vaccinations or because prior measles disease created immunity. However, individuals are encouraged to consult with their health care provider or review vaccination records to determine if they are at risk for getting this infection.

According to the Department of Health:

Individuals who are NOT protected against measles are:
• Infants who are too young to have been immunized (less than one year of age).
• Persons who were vaccinated with an inactivated vaccine, which was used from 1963 through 1967, and have not been revaccinated.
• Persons born after 1957 who have not received two doses of measles-containing vaccine.
• Persons from areas of the world where there is low vaccine coverage and circulating measles.

The tractor trailer, which was carrying frozen french fries, caught fire a little after 4 p.m. near the Route 30 exit in Radnor Township. Further details on the fire were not immediately available.

The southbound lanes of the interstate were closed at I-76 until about 10:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported.

NEW YORK (CBS/AP) — Thirty-three years to the day after 6-year-old Etan Patz vanished without a trace while walking to catch a school bus, a man accused of strangling him and dumping his body with the trash was arraigned on a murder charge on Friday in a locked hospital ward where he was being held as a suicide risk.

A lawyer for Pedro Hernandez, who was a teenage convenience store stock clerk at the time of the boy’s disappearance, told the judge that his client is mentally ill and has a history of hallucinations.
Hernandez, now 51, appeared in court on Friday evening via video camera from a conference room at Bellevue Hospital, where he was admitted earlier in the day after making comments about wanting to kill himself.

The legal proceeding lasted only around 4 minutes. Hernandez didn’t speak or enter a plea, but his court-appointed lawyer, Harvey Fishbein, told the judge that his client was bipolar and schizophrenic and has a
“history of hallucinations, both visual and auditory.”

A judge ordered Hernandez held without bail and authorized a psychological examination to see if he is fit to stand trial.

Hernandez was expressionless during the hearing. He wore an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs. A police officer stood behind him.

The prosecutor who appeared in court, Assistant District Attorney Armand Durastanti, said it was “33 years ago today that 6-year-old Etan Patz left his home on Prince Street to catch his school bus. He has not been seen or heard from since. It’s been 33 years, and justice has not been done in this case.”

Hernandez, a churchgoing father now living in Maple Shade, N.J., was arrested Thursday after making a surprise confession in a case that has bedeviled investigators and inspired dread in generations of New York City parents for three decades.

Etan disappeared on May 25, 1979, on his two-block walk to his bus stop in Manhattan. It was the first time his parents had let him walk the route by himself.

Next to the bus stop was a convenience store, where Hernandez, then 18, worked as a clerk. When police, acting on a tip, interviewed him this week, he said he lured Etan into the basement with a promise of a soda, choked him to death, then stuffed his body in a bag and left it with trash on the street a block away, police said.

Etan’s remains were never found, even after a massive search and a media campaign that made parents afraid to let their children out of their sight and sparked a movement to publicize the cases of missing youngsters. Etan was one of the first missing children to be pictured on a milk carton.

Hernandez’s confession put investigators in the unusual position of bringing the case to court before they had amassed any physical evidence or had time to fully corroborate his story or investigate his psychiatric condition.

Police spokesman Paul Browne said investigators were retracing garbage truck routes from the late 1970s and deciding whether to search landfills for the boy’s remains, a daunting prospect.

Crime scene investigators also arrived Friday morning at the building in Manhattan’s SoHo section that once held the bodega where Hernandez worked. Authorities were considering excavating the basement for evidence.

They were also looking into whether Hernandez has a history of mental illness or pedophilia.
Browne said letting Hernandez remain free until the investigation was complete was not an option: “There was no way we could release the man who had just confessed to killing Etan Patz.”

Legal experts said that even though police have a confession in hand, they are likely to work hard to make certain Hernandez isn’t delusional or simply making the story up.

“There’s always a concern whether or not someone is falsely confessing,” said former prosecutor Paul DerOhannesian.

As Fishbein arrived at the courthouse, he asked reporters to be respectful of some of Hernandez’s relatives there, including his wife and daughter.

“It’s a tough day. The family is very upset. Please give them some space,” Fishbein said.

Etan’s father, Stanley Patz, avoided journalists gathered outside the family’s Manhattan apartment, the same one the family was living in when his son vanished.

Former SoHo resident Roberto Monticello, a filmmaker who was a teenager when Patz disappeared, said he remembered Hernandez as civil but reserved and “pent-up.”

“You always got the sense that if you crossed him really bad, he would hurt you,” Monticello said, although he added that he never saw him hit anyone.

Monticello said Hernandez was also one of the few teenagers in the neighborhood who didn’t join in the all-out search for Etan, which consumed SoHo and the city for months. “He was always around, but he never helped. He never participated,” Monticello said.

Hernandez, who moved to New Jersey shortly after Etan’s disappearance, suffered a back injury that has kept him on disability for years, according to police.

In an interview with Eyewitness News, the Rev. George Bowen Jr., pastor at Hernandez’s church in Moorestown, N.J., said he attended services regularly.

He said Hernandez’s wife, Rosemary, and daughter, Becky, a college student, went to see him Thursday morning after he was taken into police custody.

“My heart breaks for them,” said Reverend George Bowen. “They’re devastated. There is no conceivable way that either one of them knew about this.”

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Hernandez gave a detailed confession that led police to believe they had the right man. He also said Hernandez told a relative and others as far back as 1981 that he had “done something bad” and killed a child in New York.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Investigators believe a Philadelphia woman killed her twin babies and attempted to kill her young daughter and then herself because she thought the children’s father was having an affair with a family member.

Authorities charged Stacey Smalls, 41, with two counts of 1st degree murder Friday afternoon for the deaths of her 18-month-old twins, a boy and a girl. Police believe Smalls strangled the one twin and drowned the other. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results for the official cause of death.

The horrific discovery was made Thursday afternoon inside a home in the 6300 block of Ditman Street in the city’s Tacony section.

In addition, police say she gave her four-year-old daughter some type of substance to drink in a suspected attempt to take her life.

The four-year-old was taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children where she is listed in stable but guarded condition.

Police say Smalls, who neighbors say worked as a nurse at an area hospital, then attempted to take her own life by cutting her wrists. She remains in the hospital.

Police sources say Smalls left a note at the home addressed to the children’s father letting him know that she did what she is accused of doing because she learned that he was allegedly having an affair with a family member. Police say the father is the one who made the discovery and called 911.

Police questioned him earlier Friday. The father has asked for his privacy as a memorial to the children grows outside the house. Friends and coworkers have stopped by to show support.

Philadelphia homicide detectives are investigating.

It happened a little before 7 a.m. at a 29-year-old woman’s home in North Philadelphia.

Police say two men walked in the home, demanded money and then sexually assaulted the victim before fleeing with a DVD player and assorted jewelry.

One suspect is described as a black male, 5’8” with a medium build and weighing about 200 lbs. He was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, blue jean shorts and sneakers.

The second suspect is described as a medium built Hispanic male, 5’6” to 5’7” and weighing about 180 lbs. He was wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt and jean shorts.

Senators approved SB1349 by Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, on a 28-5 vote, sending it to the Assembly.
Yee said social media is a repository of personal, private information that most people never imagined would be open to the public.

Sen. Ted Gaines, one of several Republicans who voted against the legislation, said he supports the intent of the bill but is concerned that it’s too broad. He said it might prohibit an employer from investigating claims of employee harassment.

“Sometimes you can prevent an escalation of harassment by intervening early,” said Gaines, R-Granite Bay.

Yee said the bill allows employers that have initiated a formal investigation to access social media accounts, but “we clearly do not want employers to go on a fishing expedition.”

He noted that many social media accounts contain personal information that employers are prohibited from otherwise seeking, such as employees’ religious affiliation.

“Just simply turning over that account to an employer opens up tremendous liability,” Yee said.
A similar bill by Assemblywoman Nora Campos, D-San Jose, passed previously in the Assembly. While it would prohibit employers from acquiring social media passwords, it does not extend the prohibition to universities and colleges, as Yee’s bill does.

Several other states are considering similar bans, including Washington, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey. Two U.S. senators have asked the U.S. Department of Justice to review whether such requests by employers are legal.

HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ (CBS) - Haddon Township Police have arrested a juvenile they believe to be responsible for painting ethnic slurs and vulgar language on homes and cars in the historically black community of Saddlertown.

Police Chief Mark Cavallo says the painting took place in the overnight hours of May 12th to May 13.

“We have a 17-year-old juvenile from neighboring Collingswood, New Jersey. We believe this juvenile is responsible for most of these incidents.”

The juvenile is facing a number of charges and could face more as Cavallo is working with the Camden County Prosecutors office.

“He’s being processed right now, his parent is here. We haven’t determined whether or not he’ll be released.”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Legacy Parenting Project, a non-profit helping young parents, held a conference for more than 100 teen mothers today at a hotel at Philadelphia International Airport.

Morgan is a high school senior in Aston and three months pregnant.

“Your life is over. That’s all I’ve heard so far,” she says. “But no, it’s not.”

Because event organizer Monica Williams says there are resources to help teen parents deal with higher education, finance and even housing.

“They are the main concerns of this population. A lot of them have no where to go, a lot of them are in shelters. So, a lot of the girls are interested in moving out, moving on and moving forward.”

Kaitlyn, a high school senior, says the social media seminar she sat through will help her with her 18-month old boy.
