Philadelphia (CBS)– Whitney Houston was such an iconic figure to people around the world and right here in Philadelphia.

Eyewitness News spoke to several fans who followed Houston’s career from beginning to end.

“Whitney Houston, no matter what life she led, the impact that she has had on music is undeniable,” said WRNB radio talk show host MoShay LaRen.

LaRen says she grew up watching and wanting to be like Houston. “As a young girl, Whitney Houston, she could do no wrong,” said LaRen. “Everybody wanted to be Whitney Houston and have the big ‘ I Want to Dance with Somebody’ hair.”

The pop-icon’s voice, style, and grace attracted fans from everywhere. Here in Philadelphia, Houston is being remembered. KYW Newsradio spoke to WDAS radio personality Patty Jackson and Philadelphia native and singer Kathy Sledge.

“She was such a huge role model,” said Sledge. “She was such a huge role model to so many, especially young black women, young black girls.”

“She is truly one of the greatest singers of our generation,” said Jackson. “It was so sad to see her life as we watched her through the ups and the downs,” Jackson noted.

Chuck Gamble of Philadelphia International Records says in the mid-80s, when Houston was still relatively unknown, she recorded “Hold Me” with Sound of Philadelphia sensation Teddy Pendergrass- the first song after his accident.

“It gave Whitney a chance to come out with a legendary artist.”

Gamble says Houston was a superstar and one of the best voices in decades.

“She had the ability to sing a song both vocally and have people love her.”

Gamble says The Sound of Philadelphia had a long history with the entire Houston family.

“Gamble had an opportunity to work with her mother early on, in the 70s with Cissy Houston when she was a part of one of the acts they had then called the Sweet Inspirations.”

He says the world has lost a voice that will be untouched for many years to come.

“She’s one of the greatest artists that we’ve had in the last 20 years or so.”

Those who followed Houston’s life were not oblivious to the tough times. Houston divorced her husband, R&B Artist Bobby Brown and accused him of domestic abuse. She later admitted that she had a drug problem. But there was something special about Houston, fans say that kept them wanting the best for the legendary singer, who died at the age of 48.

“No matter what she went through, the world has always believed that she would come back,” said LarRen. “She was on her way back and people were believing that she was on her way back.”

Legendary producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, who wrote and produced hits with the late Linda Creed, who later wrote Houston’s #1 smash, ‘Greatest Love of All,’ released a joint statement.

“Whitney Houston was an unbelievable talent and one of the greatest voices of all time. Her passing is a tremendous shock and a terrible shame. She had a rough life and was under so much pressure as an artist, because she meant so much to the music community. She was one of the most admired singers ever, who was loved by everybody. We’re praying for her family.”

Gamble & Huff also recalled Ms. Houston’s strong Philly connection:

- A then-unknown Whitney Houston recorded “Hold Me,” a duet with Gamble & Huff recording artist Teddy Pendergrass for his 1984 Elektra album, “Love Language,” his first following the automobile accident that left him paralyzed.

- Gamble & Huff wrote and produced a number of hits with the late Linda Creed, who later wrote Houston’s #1 Smash, “Greatest Love of All.” They first met Houston in Philadelphia at a memorial for Creed, following her death from breast cancer, recalling that Houston “looked like a model and had so much going for her” when they went to her dressing room. They also recalled seeing Houston for the last time at Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party in 2008.

- Gamble & Huff’s relationship with the Houston family began in the late ‘60s when they worked with the R&B act the Sweet Inspirations, founded by Cissy Houston. A Gamble & Huff composition, “Gotta Find Me A Brand New Lover” appeared on the group’s fifth album (Sweet Sweet Soul) in 1969, and “whenever Cissy couldn’t find a baby sitter, she’d bring Whitney to our studio in Philly. Cissy always used to talk about her daughter when we were recording with her, and what a great talent she was going to be.”

Kal Rudman, publisher of the Friday Morning Quarterback, bible of the broadcast and music industries, also expressed his thoughts on the passing of Ms. Houston.

“We have lost a magnificent voice, and I am certainly grief-stricken. This is another tremendous blow to the record industry. Whitney’s alliance with the genius, Clive Davis, who often produced her records and picked most of her hit songs with his golden ears, made for a double dynamite combination.

“Whitney came to my office in Cherry Hill (NJ) a number of times and she couldn’t have been sweeter or more humble during each and every visit. She was a highly gifted woman from a highly gifted family, which included her blessed mother Cissy, another extraordinary singer, and her aunt, Dionne Warwick, whose dream of becoming a motion picture actress was realized through Whitney when she scored big in the movies. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree. I was disappointed that I was never able to work out the scheduling for a visit with her on the frequent record business specials that I co-hosted and produced on The Merv Griffin Show.

On behalf of the staff of the Friday Morning Quarterback, we send our deep condolences to an iconic musical family.

On Sunday, the chairman of the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, Damon Williams also commented on the death of Houston.

“We love Whitney Houston so much for sharing her special gift with the world.Whitney took the torch from R&B Pioneers before her and carried it to unimaginable heights. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all of Whitney’s family members.We are thankful for the many years of support from Whitney’s mom, Cissy Houston, and cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, who all are recipients of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation Pioneer Award.”

Philadelphia (CBS) – The winners of the 2012 Mummers Parade were announced Sunday night at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Woodland finished first among the string bands, and was followed in the standings by Quaker City, South Philadelphia, Ferko and Fralinger. The South Philly Vikings finished first in the fancy brigade division. In the fancy division, Hog Island topped Golden Sunrise and Murray topped Landi and Goodtimers in the comic division.

The annual New Year’s Day Mummers Parade tradition kicked off early Sunday morning in South Philadelphia.

As early as 5 a.m., Eyewitness News followed the Golden Sunrise New Year’s Association. They spent much of their morning loading props and customs onto trucks.

“We’ve been around since 1960,” said Sunrise member Matt Glovacz, who gave his annual speech before his Mummer group left for the parade.

“Let’s kick some butt,” said Glovacz. “Just remember to smile and have fun.”

Philadelphia’s rich, Mummer history goes back more than 100 years. Organizers say the first recognized parade was in 1901. Since then, the event has and continues to attract thousands of spectators every year.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The driver who faces charges for killing a cyclist in Kensington Friday night was also arrested the day before for driving under the influence, according to police.

Authorities say 22-year-old Brett Truskin of Ivyland, Pa. was stopped by police while driving on I-95 on Thursday, sent to jail and released on bail early Friday morning.

At about 6:30 Friday evening, police say Truskin was driving around Kensington intoxicated when he struck 49-year-old Gregory Loper, a husband and father of 11 children, near the intersection of Lehigh Avenue and Jasper Street.

Nicole Gerner tells CBS-3 Eyewitness News she came to help the 49-year-old victim, but there was nothing she could do.

“He didn’t have a helmet on, but the impact was so bad it might not have even helped.”

Loper was on his way home from work and since he didn’t arrive on time, his wife Tanya Cuffee went to check out the accident scene. She found his sock and hat under a car. His bike was in pieces on the road.

“How would you feel if your kids had to grow up without their father, never seeing him?” shouted Cuffee.

Loper was pronounced dead at Hahnemann University Hospital about 30 minutes after the crash.

Investigators say Truskin also struck four parked cars and another vehicle driven by a 52-year-old man who was transported to Temple University Hospital with back and stomach pain.

Witnesses say after the crash, Truskin tried to run away but was caught by a man who held him until police arrived.

Truskin is charged with DUI and involuntary manslaughter, as well as other charges. His bail is set at $475,000.

The victim remains in “extremely critical” condition at Jefferson Hospital, and cops are hoping for help from local bars and restaurants, or the public.

Police lieutenant Ray Evers says that with the Monday night loss by the Eagles, maybe these guys got juiced up and were looking to pick a fight.

“We believe that these two males may have been in a bar in the area, and they may have been on 2nd Street or South Street,” Evers said today.

The pair walked to 4th and Pine Streets, where Evers says they punched a 46-year-old man who was on his way to work — the graveyard shift at a building nearby.

“There’s a vicious battle,” Evers says.  “This goes on for about 30 seconds.  And we believe that he, the complainant, was getting the best of these two males and they cowardly shot the male while he was on the ground.”

Police have released a surveillance video, but the suspects’ faces aren’t clearly shown.

Cops describe the two they are looking for as white or light-skinned Hispanic men, one around 6’1″ and 180 pounds, the other, 5’9″ and 150 pounds, both wearing dark clothing.

Evers says one of the men had a “distinctive logo” on the back of his jacket.  Investigators hope someone will recognize it and give them a call.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Authorities say a man was shot and killed by an on-duty Philadelphia police officer Saturday morning.

It happened at Olga’s bar at the corner of Percy and Pike streets in Hunting Park at about 12:30 a.m.

A dispute between two men, including 26-year-old Aldophus Pinkney, escalated and shots were fired, according to authorities. When police arrived, they tried to subdue Pinkney who they say opened fire at them.

A police officer returned fire, killing the suspect. Pinkney was pronounced dead at the scene.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A multi-alarm fire broke out at a campground in Delaware County.

The campground fire in Chester Heights broke out around 4:00 a.m. in a building housing an unoccupied camp church, according to state police. The fire scene was near Second Avenue and Smith Bridge Road.

No injuries are being reported. Local detours are in place. A state police spokeswoman at the Media barracks had no other information on the extent of the fire or the cause.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – It is day two of the Susan G. Komen 3-day Walk for the Cure and hundreds of supporters greeted the walkers.

The sun was shining and there was a crisp fall breeze, a much better day for the 2,200 walkers than the rainy day one.

It was the second leg of their three day, 60 mile journey. Many supporters at City and Belmont Avenues where there to cheer, encourage and thank the walker in their lives as they passed by.

Man: “My wife is a two time survivor and she is walking today.”

Woman: “I’m here to support some lovely ladies I met last year. I did the walk last year and wasn’t able to do it this year and I’m just out here to give them all the support I can.”

Girl: “Our teacher is doing the 3 day walk and we just wanted to support her because she’s also our field hockey coach and we just wanted to let her know that we love her.”

Each walker had to raise at least $2,300. The walk ends Sunday afternoon with a closing ceremony at the Navy Yard.

Eyewitness News’ Jericka Duncan caught up with fans who are still experiencing playoff fever this morning.

At Oregon Diner in South Philadelphia Angelo Montone gives his analysis of the game.

He says, in order for the Phillies to make it to the World Series, they have to play good defense and continue their good pitching.

“Get the timely hits when we need them, when we have people at second and third,” says Montone. “They’ll be ok, they can beat anybody at this point.”

Teachers Lucille Sisti of Drexel Hill and Diana Regan of Rittenhouse say they didn’t see the whole game, but they saw enough to know the Phillies have a good chance of going all the way.

“I thought the game was amazing,” says Sisti, who was most impressed by the Phillies comeback in the sixth inning.

“They have a wonderful pitching team, they got to do it this year,” says Regan.

Shortly after last night’s game, several fans left Citizens Bank Park the same way they came in; happy and thrilled to be a Phillies fan. “I am so excited,” said Sarah Gougher. “This has been our first game this season when we actually came here and saw them win!”

KYW Newsradio’s Cherri Gregg reports, the fans at the Field House Sports Bar in Center City last night were beyond happy.

“Great win!”

“I knew we were going to kick these Cardinals’ butt!”

“The Phillies are the only team in Philadelphia that actually wins something!”

But, fans were on an emotional roller coaster throughout the game.

Jennifer, who has been a Phils fan since she was eight-years-old, says, “I’ve been biting my nails. (I’m) a little nervous.”

She refused to jinx the game, but in the end, she and the rest of the fans were hyped and looking forward to a win in game two.

The Phillies lead the series 1-0. They take on the St. Louis Cardinals at 8:07 at Citizens Bank Park.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – It is a beautiful thing to hear Ed Nancarrow talk about September 11, 2001.

Now a resident of Texas, but formerly of Pennsauken, N.J., Nancarrow came back to South Jersey Sunday to share his story with his old congregation at Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Cherry Hill.

An employee of the New York State Banking Department at the time, Nancarrow worked at the World Trade Center, and he was on the 96th floor of the South Tower, the second building struck, that morning.

“I only had three more days to go on that assignment,” he told the church.

Out of his peripheral vision, he saw what happened to the North Tower – and figured there was an explosion inside the building. He did not know it had been struck by a plane. Still, he was told to evacuate and started down the stairs.

As he was heading down, he said there were several announcements in the building that said everything was fine and workers should return to their desks.

“Something inside me said ‘No. You’re not going to stop. You’re going to keep on going.’”

Nancarrow made it out but was just blocks away when his building fell.

“At that moment, my poor friend Bob Woods said, ‘Is this the way it’s going to end?’ And a thought crossed my mind. I said ‘No Bob, this is not the way it’s going to end. The Good Lord has not gotten me this far for it to end now.’”

Nancarrow says he tells his story so that others can see that despite all the death and destruction, God was there on September 11, guiding the nation through one of its darkest days.

Nancarrow believes God saved countless lives that day including his own. Nancarrow says God also guided him home to Pennsauken that night despite having no car and very little cash.

“We talk about the 3,000 who died, but those World Trade Centers hold 50,000 workers a day,” Nancarrow says. “If those planes had hit later in the day, we would have lost a lot more.”

SHANKSVILLE, Pa. (AP) – Thousands of family members and friends of the 40 passengers and crew killed aboard United Flight 93 were gathering with political dignitaries, local officials and residents for a second day at the newly dedicated national park that marks the site where the hijacked jet crashed during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Sunday’s memorial service at the Flight 93 Memorial, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, was being held in concert with ceremonies in New York City and Washington, D.C., where other hijacked jets crashed into both towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Vice President Joe Biden and former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush were on hand Saturday to christen the Flight 93 Memorial, the nation’s newest national park.

President Barack Obama participated in the memorial service in New York City and is scheduled to visit the Flight 93 site on Sunday. It’s not clear whether Obama will speak during the ceremony, but he is expected to lay a wreath at the memorial following the ceremony and meet with family members of those who perished, according to Gov. Tom Corbett’s staff.

Visitors to the Flight 93 service observed moments of silence at 8:46 a.m. and 9:03 a.m. — the times when two other airliners were crashed into New York’s twin towers. They were expected to do the same at 9:37 a.m., when a third airliner hit the Pentagon.

The Flight 93 program was to begin a few moments later before a fourth — and final — moment of silence is observed at 10:03 a.m.

That’s when Flight 93 crashed after passengers and crew, some alerted by cell phone calls from loved ones about the New York attacks, decided to try to wrest control of their plane from four hijackers. The plane crashed during the struggle, and investigators later determined the hijackers intended to crash it into the Capitol in Washington, D.C., where the House and Senate were in session that morning.

Those actions prompted Biden and others on hand Saturday to salute the Flight 93 victims as “citizen patriots” who fought the first battle in the ongoing war against global terrorism.

By contrast, Sunday’s memorial was expected to take a more somber tone, low-key tone as some of Pennsylvania’s Congressional delegation was expected to join Corbett and former Gov. Tom Ridge to honor the dead. Ridge was in office when the attacks occurred and later became the country’s first secretary of Homeland Security.

The driver of the civilian car was not hurt. Both officers are under treatment and listed in good condition at Thomas Jefferson Hospital. One officer complained of wrist pain. The other officer suffered a leg fracture.

Police say no charges were lodged against the driver of the striking car since he stopped to render help. The accident happened as both cars were making a turn.

The medical examiner officially listed the cause of death as cardio-vascular disease and heat.

Moran says the man’s home windows were all closed; the home had no fans and no air conditioning.

The Saturday death was the first resulting from the current heat wave and the fifth of the 2011 summer season in the city.

It happened on the 900 block of Fairview Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning. A family on the second floor of the building got out safely and there are no reports of injuries to other residents.

However, one firefighter was reported to have been injured, though it is unclear how serious the injury was.

The fire caused a portion of the building to collapse.

Police say the shooting happened outside the Felton Supper Club in the 4800 block of Rising Sun Avenue just before 3 a.m. Sunday

“Right now, all we have is that there are two black males, approximately 18 to 20 years old, fleeing the scene at this location,” said Deputy Commissioner Richard Ross.

East Division detectives say some kind of argument sparked the shooting.

All of the victims were between the ages of 19 and 35 years of age, according to police. Four victims were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center. Another five were sent to Temple University Hospital. As of now, police say eight of the victims are in stable condition.

According to authorities, the building lacks security, putting anyone in the area in danger.

In a press conference Sunday afternoon, Mayor Nutter said he wants to shut the venue down.

“This could have been a mass murder out here, given the amount of rounds of fire, the number of people hit,” said Mayor Nutter.

Police searched the neighborhood for clues and recovered two handguns which had been ditched along Hope Street. The investigation is ongoing.

The teachers’ union has also been named as a defendant.

Calls to Patricia Heenan, the attorney of record for the four teachers and the School District of Philadelphia, have not been returned.

Dan O’ Meara (below right), chair of the labor and employment section of the local Montgomery McCracken law firm (which has no connection to the case), says federal law anti-discrimination law applies.

“If they were discriminated against, they would have a claim under either federal Title VII or so-called Section 1981, another federal law,” he explains.  “The standards they would be judged by would are the same legal standards as would be applied to a case where an African-American would be alleging race discrimination.”

And O’Meara says this is not the only case of its kind.

“There are reverse discrimination suits brought across the country (but) they are not near as common. Some succeed, some don’t.  It’s a very fact-intensive inquiry.  As a general matter, I’ve observed that judges tend not to take the cases too seriously, so typically the white plaintiffs bringing the cases want to get them in front of a jury,” he told KYW Newsradio.

He says that it may be a tough case to prove but it depends on the evidence they have.  Were there witnesses? Documents or e-mails to support what the teachers allege?  O’Meara says these items will be crucial.

O’Meara says that labor unions are not typically named in these suits, but if the union facilitated discrimination of any kind it could be held legally accountable.

Sunday morning 30,000 people laced up their running shoes for the 32nd Annual Broad Street Run. Cheers from supporters and a slight breeze in the air, helped to motivate participants as they started their 10 mile trek down Broad Street to the Philadelphia Naval Yard.

Mayor Michael Nutter began the race, “32 years ago 1,500 runners and today we have 30,000 people out here. It’s a fantastic showing by Philadelphia. The Recreation Department did an incredible job.”

And most runners seemed to agree. “We’re feeling pretty good ” said one runner at the 9-mile mark.

CBS 3 News anchor Dave Huddleston was also in attendance. “One more mile to go. I’ll be glad when it’s over.”

Race Director Jim Marino says runners were quick to register for this year’s race. He says registration was full within four days.

First-time Broad Street runner Randi Elisabeth traveled from Baltimore for the event.

“I started running hard after my first marathon in 2005 and after that, I just kept going,” said Elisabeth

The Connolly brothers from South Jersey decided to run even after losing their father Saturday night, who was waiting for a lung transplant.

“It’s bad timing that we lost him yesterday and we had to come out and run today but he’ll be with us, watching us finish the race,” said 22-year-old Lee Connolly.

While a pair of back to back to wins may have given the Temple softball team first place in the A-10, not everything went according to plan on the team’s trip to St. Louis. Junior Melissa Robbins describes the minutes leading up to evacuation.

“It was so surreal, we were all sitting there waiting and they made an announcement that they were delaying our flight because of the lightening at first. And then, everything just broke loose. There was water flying everywhere, it looked like the plans were moving a little bit off the ramp.”

Despite that, Robbins says the girls remain in high spirits, “It’s a long truck home, but we actually just found out that Fordham lost, so now we own sole possession of first place so it’s kind of an ok ride right now.”

“We were really excited just to have a chance to get home,” said rightfielder Samantha Schoell. She thought she might be spending the holiday in an airport or on a bus, after a tornado struck the Lambert-St. Louis International airport as the team was waiting to board their flight back to Philadelphia Friday.

“And then we just hear someone scream get out, get out and we were evacuated down to the lower level.”

It was scary and briefly disappointing when it looked like they’d be stuck there but coach Joe DiPietro got them on a bus Saturday night that took them to Ohio, where, in the middle of the night, their regular driver met them.

“He drove out from New Jersey and he was waiting for us when we got there.” DiPietro says the driver, Clarence Jones, drove through the night and got the team home by 9 a.m.

The daylong storm flooded parts of Kelly Drive causing drivers to dodge and detour around huge puddles of rain. As the Schuylkill River rose over its banks, traffic was at a standstill on the Schuylkill, near Kelly Drive, due to a mudslide.

Windshield wipers whipped non-stop as drivers were forced to take it easy on a wet and dreary spring Saturday.

Most flood warnings have been lifted, but two are still in effect: The Brandywine Creek in Chadd’s Ford, and the north branch of the Rancocas Creek at Pemberton.

There’s also still flooding on some roadways, including the Admiral Wilson Boulevard in Camden.

No mass transit problems, and no weather related delays at Philadelphia International Airport.

PECO says power has been restored to most of the 25,000 customers who ended up in the dark during the storms.

And PSE&G reports no major outages in their South Jersey area.

Officials say a fire broke out about 2:15 a.m. as an eastbound train was approaching the station. They say about 30 people aboard the train were evacuated; several passengers suffered smoke inhalation, including three people who were taken to Cooper Hospital for treatment.

A PATCO spokesman says the City Hall station is closed while fire fighters work to clear the smoke.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but the spokesman says it appears to be the result of a mechanical problem.

Burlington County fire officials say it took nearly two hours to control a stubborn three-alarm fire at the “B” building of the Fox Meadow apartment complex along Clover Path near Route 73.

There’s no word on the cause. Two people, both residents, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The fire was reported just after 4:00 a.m. and residents were quickly evacuated.

First fire crews arriving on the scene reported a large amount of fire showing and flames shooting some 50-feet into the air.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist those left homeless.

Emotions ran high as friends, family, and community leaders gathered at the site of Friday’s shooting, to pay homage to Robel Laboy, and to urge the community to come together.

“This needs to stop. This doesn’t need to fester on, where we’re going to another one after another one after another one; we won’t do this through the summer like we did last summer. We don’t need to go through this.”

Chester police Chief Darren Alston said the best way to prevent future tragedies, is for parents to get involved.

“If my child is going to these kinds of events, and I don’t know who’s running the event, or who’s going to be there, then yeah, I need to be there chaperoning or making sure it’s a safe place for my child.”

Police said nine people were transported to Crozer Chester Medical Center, where a spokesman said one died soon afterward and another died Saturday afternoon (see related story). Four other victims remained in stable condition, and three had been discharged, the spokesman said. A 10th person was treated at Taylor Hospital and was released.
