MOUNT AIRY, Pa. (CBS) – Hundreds of costumed trick-or-treaters paraded throughout a Mount Airy neighborhood for the community’s annual Halloween Day Parade. And as KYW’s Cherri Gregg reports, it was a goblin of a good time!

The Henry School at Sherman and Carpenter was a sight to see on Halloween night. There were dead brides, witches, pumpkins, dragons — you name it. Some of the costumes were classic.

Reporter: “Who are you supposed to be today?”
Ester: “A princess.”

Others were high tech.

And some folks didn’t wear costumes, so they had to do a trick.

David owns a house at one of the key blocks, he says he loves that his neighborhood takes Halloween to the next level.

“Right now, I’m giving out Twizzlers, but we can give out 300 pieces of candy a night at this corner. So we have more than 20 bags of candy.”

So what’s the most popular candy?

“The patties, the peanut butter patties. They go really fast.”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A lot of people look forward to the scare factor that goes along with Halloween.

However, there are those people whose fears last beyond October. Since the age of five, Antoinette Watkins says she has feared mice.

“I stuck my foot in my shoe and it scratched me to get out,” said Watkins, referring to the mouse. “I kicked the shoe off and it flew. Ever since, I have been deathly afraid of mice. I want to do something about it because it’s a really big fear of mine.”

Dr. T.J. Ghose, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, says he treats people with anxiety disorders or phobias. He says nationwide, 11 percent of population have been diagnosed as having a phobia.

“A lot of people are suffering from these anxieties, phobia’s,” said Dr. Ghose. “It’s a spectrum of fears.”

The four main categories of phobias, according to the Penn Medicine Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety are animal type, natural environment type, situational and blood/injection/injury type.

“You’re not alone,” said Dr, Ghose. “They’re are support groups who can help in these type of situations”

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Halloween weekend is coming up? Do you have your costume yet?

Bobby Williamson with Pierre’s Costume Shop expects to be slammed with customers this weekend looking for last-minute costumes.

“We run specials and promotions all the time. If people come early, they can get specials extra days – they don’t use them.”

Head designer Bobby Goodrich says, when folks do come, they usually bring with them some good ideas.

“Everywhere from TV and movies to popular books to things they see in magazines. Lots of people combine different looks, like we’ve done Titanic zombies and Amy Winehouse’s ghost.”

But you don’t have to get complicated with your look. This man opted for a classic Superman costume.

“A cape, tights, shorts and the Superman symbol on the chest.”

Kuznits: “You can’t be all dressed up with no place to go.”

“I’m going to a costume party. It would be kind of creepy if I sat at home and watched TV and didn’t do anything.”

Some folks have no choice — they have to make the time to get to the costume shop.

“My wife told me I had to dress up for this party; I couldn’t go in a suit anymore and call myself a businessman which is what I am.”

What did he choose?

“I’m going to dress up as a warrior from the dark ages.”

But elaborate costumes can add up.

“I think I spent $95 and I’m trying to rent an ax to make my costume complete.”

Kuznits: “How much is too much to spend on a Halloween costume?”

“I think that’s an individual question, you know for some people $100 might be too much, but for me it’s fun.”

CHESTER HEIGHTS, Pa. (CBS) - With Halloween just around the corner, many are getting into the spirit of things with ghost hunts. KYW’s John McDevitt joined a paranormal investigation team at an old mansion in Chester Heights, Delaware County.

Ghost hunting equipment (Credit: John McDevitt)

Electromagnetic field meters, temperature guns, k-2 meters, these are just some of the equipment that was used in the ghost hunt lead by Laurie Hull, the director of Tri-County Paranormal. The psychic investigator was going over the gadgets with the group of about 20 who were all anxious to break up into teams and explore the three-story Victorian mansion and wooded grounds.

“There are friendly ghosts here. I mean some of them feel a little bit heavy like maybe they’re like a little bit upset or impatient with us.”

McDevitt: There are children here right?

“Yes, there are children here Timothy and Annette.”

Orbs are seen in this photo: There are 2 questionable images one on woman's shoulder the other is smaller near the center of photograph. (Credit: John McDevitt)

While in an attic room, one participant asked out loud if a spirit could make a noise. It was not audible to the human ear at first, but when a digital recording was played back, there was something else that appeared. It sounded like there was an answer of “not yet”.

There were unexplained light anomalies that were captured by participants in several photographs.

You can hear portions of the ghost hunt in this CBS Philly ‘At Your Leisure’ podcast…

Candy corn comas, chocolate bar gorges and the excuse to dress like a fool for the day. A 21st-century Halloween might be more treat than trick, but it also wouldn’t be complete without a few blood-splattered chainsaws and a headless zombie or two. This month, check out these killer haunted attractions, and get ready to scream! – Chelsea Karnash

The Bates Motel
Arasapha Farm
1835 Middletown Rd.
Glen Mills, Pa.
http://thebatesmotel.com
$40 for all 3 attractions, $75 for a VIP pass (skips the line)

Arasapha offers three of the nation’s scariest Halloween attractions: the 25 minute Haunted Hayride, the Haunted Corn Maze and of course, the famous Bates Motel. Both the Haunted Hayride and the Bates Motel are regularly ranked among the creepiest of the creepy in haunted attractions nationwide, and all three attractions feature live actors, tons of “scenes” (an insane asylum, a western ghost town and—ugh—a slaughterhouse, for example) and lots of gore. Not for the youngins’, the faint of heart, or the tight with cash.

Terror Behind the Walls
Philadelphia, Pa.
www.terrorbehindthewalls.com
$20-30, Quick Passes available online

The vibe at Eastern State Penitentiary is eerie as it is, but at Halloween, the historic prison takes on a decidedly spooky air. One of the nation’s best haunts, the prison offers six attractions. New this year are The Gauntlet, an outdoor maze, and Break Out!, which puts you smack dab in the center of a chaotic prison-break.

Best of all though, is the newly-returned ESP After Dark VIP Tour ($79 or $99), which is short on special effects and all the creepier because of it. During the hour-long tour, you’ll explore the dark cell blocks in small groups with only a flashlight…and a guide, of course. After the flashlight tour, you’ll be able to skip to the front of the line for the six Terror Behind the Walls attractions.

Oh, and since this year is TBTW’s 20th anniversary, they’re celebrating with a special encore performance post-Halloween. On Nov. 12, guests can mix and mingle with haunted house/tour operators from all over the country, meet celebs from paranormal TV shows and get their scare on inside the Terror Behind the Walls tour ($99).

Frightland offers eight (yes, eight!) haunted attractions that’ll have you screaming, including the Haunted Woods, Ghost Town and The Attic. There’s also an amusement park with rides, games and concession stands, plus live entertainment some nights. One tip though: The ticket booth is at the far end of the park.

$15-35, $50 for VIP pass

Pastoral Shady Brook Farm goes ghastly after dark with Horrorfest, a haunt fest that will have you jumping—with fear, not joy—as you trek through all four attractions. There’s the Hayride of Horror, the Barn of Horror (sensing a theme here?), 3-D Alien Encounter and the aptly-named Carnage. Just don’t bring kids under 10 (or maybe even a little older!) to that last one—it’s super-graphic.

$14-30, $45 for VIP pass

Like Shady Brook, Active Acres may be peaceful by day, but it’s scare-tastic Sleepy Hollow by night. Take a 1 ¼ mile hayride through the haunted woods, or travel by foot through the Field of Fright, a disorienting corn maze. There’s also the Haunted House in the Hollow, with 17 rooms and an expansive graveyard of the undead. Survive the three attractions, and you’ll be treated to a bonfire, Halloween-themed activities and refreshments.

$30, $40 for VIP pass

With sweet costumes, great props and an A-plus effort from the actors, Fright Factory, set in a decrepit warehouse inside city limits, is a spook-tacular alternative to Terror Behind the Walls. With four haunted offerings, the experience is just frightening enough to satisfy those looking for scares, but also packs the right amount of cheese for visitors who were reluctantly dragged along by friends or family.

Lancaster’s already got that “Children of the Corn” thing going on, and that feeling is amplified every Halloween at Jason’s Woods. With seven attractions like the Barn of Terror, Pirate’s Revenge and of course, the namesake attraction Jason’s Woods, this haunted set-up will keep your heart beating the entire time. Here are a few costumes that you probably can put together from stuff you already have.

…just work. Good ideas come to me daily as mid-October approaches. I have every intention of visiting the craft store, but somehow never get around to it. At the end of a day’s work, sitting on my couch is always more alluring than battling fabric, duct tape and agitated wannabe witches on the checkout line. I suspect that I will end up where many of us find ourselves the day before Halloween: invited to a costume party with no costume, scrambling to create a last-minute get-up.

Here are a few last-minute costumes to get you out of just this predicament:

Cockroach

Other than a bedbug, what could be scarier to apartment dwellers like myself? Sure, you could go for bedbug, but you’ll likely encounter tears and stories of great tragedy instead of tequila shots. To make this costume, just conjure up a cardboard box, tape, a headband, safety pins and a brown non-toxic marker. Draw and cut the wings out of the cardboard and safety pin them to the black or brown t-shirt of your choice. Create additional legs and safety pin them to your clothing. Cut out a pair of antennas and duct tape them to your headband. Lastly draw two brown marks on your cheeks so that people understand that you’re really going for it.

A Glitter Bomb

Normally there is nothing more annoying than glitter. But Halloween is the perfect time to indulge in the sparkly substance. Glitter bombing—primarily conducted by non-violent activists and drunk girls wearing obscene hats at bachelorette parties—is when you run up to someone and dump a ton of glitter on their heads. For this costume, dress up in all red , perhaps using a red shirt you no longer care about. Write a random countdown time onto your shirt. Find a piece of rope and artfully place this somewhere on your body—this will be your fuse. Buy a ton of red glitter and sporadically cover yourself in it. Finally, create a small pouch to carry around a bunch of red glitter. This way you can literally glitter bomb your friends. Though this costume will probably cause your friends to laugh at your inner-prankster, you’ll also ensure that everyone around you has to take a nice long hangover shower the next day.

Kim Kardashian

Friends are going to snap your photo all night, so why not dress up as everyone’s favorite celebutante? Then you can pretend the flashing cameras are the paparazzi documenting your night of fame. Take this occasion to wear that sequined super-tight tube dress you bought for New Year’s Eve but never wore. Stuff your tights with extra padding around the bum to resemble her famous derriere. Find some fake jewels and a black wig, and coat on the bronzer and eyeliner. With enough photos of you posted on Facebook, you may just land your own reality show by the end of the night.

Sexy-Whatever

Creating the Sexy-Whatever is like playing a game. Come home after work, pour yourself a drink and look around your home. Find the very least sexy thing you can. Is it a spatula, a shower curtain or a box of tampons? Now go into your closet (or if you’re a guy, the closet of a girl you know) and pick out the most scandalous outfit. This should be something you’d never be caught dead wearing in public… stripper heels and ruby red lipstick, for example. Now somehow connect the two. The spatula can be a dangling necklace. The shower curtain can be a cape. And the tampons can be duct taped onto your outfit. Now you have a sexy costume full of dichotomy and humor.

Here are a few of the bone-chilling (and lighthearted) classics to get you in the mood.

Young boys and girls turn their thoughts to ghouls, ghosts and candy this time of year. But kids of all ages, even those of us too old for trick-or-treating, can also have a little fun. There are plenty of gory horror films to help celebrate the holiday, but nothing beats the Halloween classics. We’ve collected some of the fun and spooky stories, songs, cartoons and movies to get you in the mood.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

One of the all-time classic holiday specials, Charlie Brown and the gang’s trick-or-treating adventures are almost half a century old now. But some things will never change. Charlie ends up with a bag full of rocks. And Linus believes in the power of the Great Pumpkin. It’s a touching display of naive stubbornness that speaks just as well for kids today as it did back then.

Trick or Treat

The first-ever trick-or-treating on screen happened with none other than Donald Duck. Nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie try and get candy from their uncle, who decides to prank them instead. In turn, the boys get help from a friendly witch and payback with interest on their stubborn uncle.

The Haunting

Modern horror movies rely on the gruesome, but shock, blood and gore don’t necessarily make for more chills. In this 1963 classic horror, four people spend a few nights in a house to determine if it’s haunted. Scary sounds, a woman losing her sanity and only one special effect make this movie’s creepiness pretty timeless.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

This classic collection of stories is comprised of familiar tales, or new spins on old concepts. While Alvin Schwartz does a terrific job with the phrasing, it’s up to you (or whoever is brave enough to be the storyteller) to really get the whispers, the long pauses and the big scary shouts just right. Stephen Gammell’s extra scary pencil drawings add another layer of terror for your audience.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Soundtrack

There’s plenty of tired old music choices for you to listen to. Thriller? You know the moves by heart. “Monster Mash“? Not again! But Danny Elfman’s terrific score for The Nightmare Before Christmas stands the test of time.

The Pumpkin King Jack Skellington’s discovery of Christmas and his completely distorted take on it make for a great musical concept. “What’s This” combines a Christmas tune with spooky lyrics like “there’s children throwing snowballs/instead of throwing heads/they’re busy building toys/absolutely no one’s dead!” Danny Elfman adds new life to the Halloween song.

They say we turn into our parents, whether we like it or not. And that’s definitely true for me, especially around Halloween. I am a Halloween candy thief, just as my mother and father were before me.

During and after Halloween, when my children aren’t looking, I sneak into their candy bags. I do it when they’re sleeping or watching TV. I even do it when they’re right in front of me. I can’t help it. I usually don’t keep so many treats in the house. So like many of us, I can’t resist the temptation when they’re around, no matter how much I want to malign the high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils that make them taste so darn good!

Here are some strategies to keep the candy mayhem to a minimum, for yourself and your little ghouls and goblins:

1. First off, try to make some of the scary snacks on the healthier side. Not all! Just some!

2. Let the kids exchange some candy for toys or books.

3. Allow one piece of candy per night for their dessert. You can do this for a limited time or as long as you have candy left.

Here are some great ways to “get rid of” the candy productively:

1. Send it overseas to the troops who can’t get candy so easily.

2. Put the candy in goody bags or a piñata for an upcoming party.

3. Use up the candy in cookies, or melt all the chocolate candy down and use as cake frosting, brownie filling or chocolate sauce for ice cream.

Now for the yummy, not-so-healthy Halloween recipes!

Eyeball Cake Pops

(Makes about 30 pops)

Supplies:

* 1 cake mix (any flavor) or a store-bought cake

* 1 can chocolate frosting

* 2-pound bag candy melt discs, white or yellow (can get at party store)

* Lollipop sticks

* A piece of Styrofoam or old egg carton (to hold cake pops)

* 1 tube black decorating frosting (Duff Goldman makes a good one)

3. Freeze for 15 minutes.

4. When cold, form cake mixture into balls and place balls onto wax paper on cookie sheet.

5. Freeze the mixture for 15 minutes.

6. Meanwhile, melt your candy melt discs in a double boiler.

7. Dip lollipop stick into candy melt.

8. Dip candied stick into the cold cake ball.

9. Dip each cake pop into your melted candy melt discs.

10. Place the cake pop stick into a Styrofoam block or old egg carton while the shell hardens.

12. Drizzle red decorating gel down the white eyeball to look like veins.

Halloween will always be associated with my first big win in life — the day I won a massive jar of candy corn at the elementary school Halloween party by guessing the amount. The principal of the school announcing my winnings over the loudspeaker is one of the highlights of my life. Such glory… no wonder I love candy so much!

Beyond the “corny” memories, I loved that everyone wore their costumes to school. We got to wear makeup and high heels. And it didn’t even mind that we could barely breathe behind the ubiquitous plastic princess masks. (I think there were only 3 costumes to choose from back then.) Everyone ate hotdogs for dinner, making for a quick mealtime before our parents let us collect and eat candy from strangers at random houses in the neighborhood. Boy, have times changed. And I’m not only talking about safety and health precautions.

Nowadays, in our very involved parent culture, parents must also know how to make Halloween crafts. Now THAT is really scary! I’m not a crafty person by nature, and I cringe at the thought of glitter and glue spilled all over my house. But even I have learned how to channel my inner Martha Stewart over the years to create inexpensive and EASY crafts for Halloween. The kids have loads of fun being creative, and it’s a perfect way for a family to spend some quality time together. At this point, I may even enjoy these crafty activities more than they do. Halloween doesn’t have to be just for kids.

Here are some of my favorite Halloween craft projects I’ve collected over the years:

American history is rich with tall tales, legends and hauntings. A subject of movies, books and countless debates, these fantastical stories have captured our human curiosity for generations. And while they may be just stories, there is probably some truth to them too.

Here are some of the more frightening tales:

Photo Credit: Samuel Walker & Company, 1876

The Salem Witch Trials

Perhaps the most underplayed event in American history, the Salem witch trials and the large number of executions to follow, gave Colonial America its first few tastes of the supernatural. In the 1500s, hundreds of women were burned, hanged, drowned or beheaded after accusations of witchcraft. Though historians would later attribute the panic and outbreak to a bad crop during harvest, documented reports suggest these women possessed powers associated with the dark arts. From casting homemade spells to taking flight to falling into fits, there is a legacy of unexplained events. Now a tourist hot spot during autumn, Salem still possesses an eerie energy. Were these witch trials the result of settlers adjusting to a new world? Or did the early colonial women uncover something darker that had already been there lurking?

Bigfoot

Perhaps the most famous of the modern American legends, Bigfoot (sometimes referred to as Sasquatch) has been a topic of conversation for years. Biologists and animal experts have gone on record a number of times saying that it is possible for a creature like this to both exist and survive in the heavily wooded areas of our country. Since these areas are uninhabited by humans on a regular basis, it is not unlikely that a creature could live untouched by man. Many photos, footprints and reports of personal encounters have been proved to be hoaxes. However many other stories cannot be disproved and therefore must remain mysteries.

The Stanley Hotel

Often hailed as one of the most haunted places in the country, The Stanley Hotel was the inspiration for Steven King’s novel The Shining. Reports of paranormal activity are daily occurrences, especially in the ballroom. Guests have reported seeing people walk the hallways and then suddenly disappear, hearing the sounds of children laughing in empty sections of the hotel and having objects move completely on their own. Many ghost hunting teams and researchers have done specials on the Stanley and come out with different and contradictory conclusions, meaning the cause of these events has yet to be determined. Keep this in mind next time you fall asleep in a strange bed far from home and hear something go bump in the night.

The Jersey Devil

The woods of New Jersey hold many secrets, one of which is the legend of the Jersey Devil. Though there is no solid accurate description of what this entity looks like, it is often portrayed as a winged creature with demonic features. The legend states that an unknown woman gave birth to a child, who she immediately offered to the devil. Shortly thereafter, the child grew wings and flew off screaming into the night, where it has remained ever since. Every year, hundreds of eye witnesses report a flying creature in the Jersey woods. Some even say that it has claimed the lives of lost hikers and campers who wander too far. Whether or not you buy into the story, it’ll make you think twice about that evening woodland stroll.

Here are some of the many interesting ways it's used, including a few you may not have thought of.

Apples and cider are popular this time of year. But the pumpkin is king. No other fruit or gourd gets this much love, as a food or a projectile or a canvas for artistic expression. Pumpkin pie and roasted pumpkin seeds are delicious seasonal treats. But what other food is hurled for distance via giant air cannons and catapults? And would a family ever get together to carve decorative shapes into another fruit? (Actually, the tradition comes from Ireland and Britain, where turnips were used but still…) The great pumpkin, in all its creative uses, provides loads of entertainment.

Here are just some of the more outrageous activities involving pumpkins:

Going for Distance

Pumpkin Chunking is the flinging of pumpkins for distance using some sort of mechanical contraption. Slingshot, trebuchet… you name it, it’s probably been tried. Competitions happen all over the United States every fall, usually after harvest time. Now in its second decade, Delaware’s Punkin Chunkin’ contest is the gold standard for tossing pumpkins as far as backyard scientists can manage. (The current world record is 5,545.43 feet!)

Pumpkin Destruction

While some people fling pumpkins for distance, others use them for for more destructive purposes. Ever wonder how much damage an 1100 pound pumpkin falling out of the sky would do to a car? You’re about to find out.

Some people just want to celebrate the majestic pumpkin as one of the glories of Mother Nature. Watch this pumpkin grow to half a ton in size over the course of a summer. And then watch it blow up.

Body by Pumpkin

We consume a lot of calories around Halloween with all the candy and other treats. But the pumpkin has got you covered. This versatile gourd can help keep you thin and make your workout a little more festive in the process.

Pumpkin Picasso

Pumpkins are for carving. But all pumpkin carvers aren’t created equal. Some people, like Ray Villafane, are regular Picassos of the trade. This guy can turn an average pumpkin into a masterpiece. And he’s spent the last 15 years perfecting the art of pumpkin carving, with amazing results.

Mad Scientist Pumpkin Carving

Art isn’t everyone’s strong point. Steve Spangler adds a little mad science to his jack-o’-lantern to create an oozing monstrosity perfect for any porch.

Sure, spring’s got flowers, but it’s also got showers. And summer has sunshine, but all that sunshine gets hot. As for winter…well, snow’s fun for, like, a day.

But fall—fall has Halloween and Thanksgiving, bright blue skies and crunchy leaves, and colorful foliage that looks more like something out of a 19th century Thomas Cole painting than real life.

Hands down, Wissahickon is the best part of the city’s Fairmount Park system. As you meander (or bike, or jog, or hike) along one of the densely wooded park’s 57 miles of trails, the city smog and crowds will seem miles away. In their place, birds will be chirping, fallen leaves will satisfyingly crunch beneath your feet, and sunshine will filter softly through the branches of multi-hued trees. Sound lovely? It is. And you know what makes it even better? A hot chocolate or apple cider at the adorable Valley Green Inn post-walk.

Valley Forge in autumn can only be described as hauntingly beautiful. That beauty is clear to anyone who visits the 3600 acres of meadows, woodlands and rolling hills, transformed into a living landscape painting by fall. But it’s juxtaposed by the fact that more than 2000 men died here during the long, hard winter of 1777-78, when George Washington’s Continental Army camped in what’s now the park. Amble through the vividly colored forests and stumble upon 18th century relics—like Washington’s headquarters or the reconstructed log cabins of his men—and its hard not to feel the pull of history. So yes, while Valley Forge is truly beautiful in fall, it’s also haunting—in a good way.
