By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – DeSean Jackson said his contract situation kept him from performing as well as he could have last season for the Eagles. Long-term deal or not, Jackson stands to make a lot of money next year. 94 WIP’s Howard Eskin has confirmed that the Eagles plan to use their ‘franchise tag’ on the wide receiver.

The franchise tag doesn’t necessarily mean that Jackson will be a member of the Eagles next year, but it does assure that if the Eagles do let him go, they’ll get something in exchange.

Here’s how it works; by placing the tag on Jackson, the Eagles must offer Jackson the average of the top five salaries in the NFL at his position (wide receiver) for one year. Those salaries range from Calvin Johnson’s $14 million and Sidney Rice’s $7 million, and the average is about $9.1 million. After making that offer, the Eagles are free to pursue a long-term deal with Jackson, perhaps lowering the average salary over the life of the deal and locking Jackson up for the future. The Eagles are also able to trade Jackson’s rights to another team. If the team is unable to sign Jackson to a long-term deal, or get sufficient value in a trade, they can sign him for just the 2012 season. The Eagles would be able to put the franchise tag on Jackson next year as well. Teams can put the tag on a player for a maximum of two consecutive years.

What do you want the Eagles to do, sign Jackson for one year, sign him for multiple years, or trade his rights? Let us know in the comments.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – If you go to Lincoln Financial Field on any given Fall Sunday, the number of Michael Vick jerseys in the crowd would suggest that he’s very popular. Outside of the stadium however, it seems people feel a little bit differently.

Forbes magazine combined surveys conducted by Nielson and E-Poll Market research to determine who the most disliked people in sports are. Vick topped the list, followed by Kris Humphries (New Jersey Nets), Tiger Woods, Alex Rodriguez (New York Yankees) and Kurt Busch (NASCAR) rounding out the top four.

To find out about what factors went into the study, and see who else made the top ten, read the rest of the article HERE.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Former New York Giants and New York Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress wants to play for the Philadelphia Eagles next season, according 94 WIP’s Howard Eskin via a Twitter report.

Last season was Burress’ first in the league since serving almost two years in prison for criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, after he accidentally shot himself in a New York nightclub. When Burress was released from prison, he was wearing a Phillies hat, fueling rumors he wanted to play for the Eagles last season.

Burress, 34 years old, caught 45 passes for 613 yards and eight touchdowns for the Jets last season. In 144 games with the Steelers, Giants and Jets, Burress has 550 receptions for 8457 yards and 63 touchdowns.

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – After watching the rival New York Giants win their second Super Bowl in five years, many Philadelphia Eagles fans were left to wonder, “could that be us next year?”

The Eagles will go into the 2012 NFL season with Andy Reid has its head coach for the 14th year, and Michael Vick as its quarterback for the third straight season. Can Reid and Vick pull off what Coughlin and Manning did? Legendary Philadelphia football writer Ray Didinger says it’s possible, but not likely, and the biggest problem might not be Andy Reid.

“Could they do it? Yeah, I guess you could say they could do it, ” Didinger said of the Eagles chances when he spoke to 94 WIP’s Angelo Cataldi and The Morning team on Monday. “The likelihood of them doing it? I would say no. I think that that’s part of the problem. I think it’s maybe the quarterback more than the coach. There’s never been a quarterback like Mike Vick, there’s never been a quarterback who plays the position like he plays it that’s won a world championship. You look at all the guys who have won it, you look at all the guys who have won Super Bowls, and they’ve all played from the pocket. You know, the scramblers, the runners, the highlight film guys, the ones who we said were going to change the game, well they are, but they’re not winning Super Bowls.”

As for Eli Manning, who took home his second Super Bowl MVP trophy (only Joe Montana has three), “he’s punched his ticket to the Hall Of Fame,” Didinger said.

Do you think the Eagles can win a Super Bowl with Andy Reid and Michael Vick? Let us know in the comments.

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – For a football team that’s not particularly well known for running the ball, LeSean McCoy had a great year. As it turns out, it was one of the best in the NFL. LeSean McCoy has won the 2011 FedEx Ground player of the year, the Eagles announced today in a release.

The release states McCoy ran for a league-high 17 touchdowns in 2011 and was named the NFC’s starting running back in the 2012 Pro Bowl. His 1,309 rushing yards ranked fourth in the NFL. He averaged 4.8 yards per attempt, and led the NFL with 84 runs for a first down. His 17 rushing touchdowns (and 20 overall) broke Eagles’ records that had stood since 1945. McCoy rushed for a season-high 185 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles’ Week 8 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. McCoy was nominated four times for FedEx Ground Player of the Week honors, winning twice.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees won the FedEx Air player of the year, setting the single season mark for passing yards with 5,476 yards.

This comes the day after Andy Reid’s first press conference since the end of the Eagles season (check out the highlights). The Eagles finished 8-8, far below expectations. McCoy’s season was considered one of the brightest spots of the season.

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – When Andy Reid spoke yesterday, it was the first time he’d said anything about the Eagles publicly since the season ended a month ago. Almost everyone that watched, listened or attended the press conference agreed that something was different about Reid. He seemed more open, more patient, and less confrontational.

Was it coincidence, a conscious decision by Reid, or was he told by the organization to change his public demeanor?

Eagles beat reporter Reuben Frank thinks that someone definitely spoke to the Eagles head coach about his tone when meeting with the media. Frank told 94 WIP’s Angelo Cataldi and The Morning Team, “I’m sure Jeff [Lurie] did say something. He mentioned that in his presser a few weeks ago that he’d like to see Andy that way, so I’m sure the owner said something to him. You know, ‘you can’t keep alienating people every time you open your mouth,’ and hopefully that got through to him.”

Frank doesn’t necessarily think this is a sign of things to come though. “I don’t really expect anything different once we get to the regular season next year,” he said. “I think we’ll see the same old Andy Reid. I kind of like that one better. I don’t like this nice Andy Reid,” he said. “I like the rude, grumpy one. I don’t know why.”

Do you think Andy Reid was told to act differently? Do you like this version of Andy better than the old one? Let us know in the comments.

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Andy Reid spoke to the media for the first time since the season ended today, about everything from why it took so long for him to speak, to Steve Spagnuolo. Here are some highlights, let us know what you think in the comments.

On why it took so long after the season for him to speak to the media:

The press conference directly after the season, you have had no time to really put everything together. You guys were eager. You’re doing a job. You’re under pressure yourselves to make sure you’re doing your job. So you’re going to throw fastballs at me. And there’s just a time where you’re going to have to buy time and step back to give you the right answer. So I tried to do it a little bit different this year than I did it in the past years. I just didn’t think that was a smooth transition into the offseason. I felt like if I step back, I could kind of analyze things and then present it to you in a better way.

On the changes to the coaching staff:

We were able to finalize the spot that was vacant on our staff by bringing Todd Bowles. I had a chance to evaluate the coaches and what we did as a team. Coming out of that I felt like both sides of the football and special teams we’ve got room to imrpove, a tremendous amount of room to improve. Starting with the defensive side, I know the obvious question among you was Juan Castillo and his situation. Juan will reman as the defensive coordinator. Todd will coach the secondary.

On the Steve Spagnuolo rumors:

Steve Spagnuolo I know was another topic, and I understand, he’s a fine football coach. Steve and I are good friends. And we talked throughout the season, as we do every year. When Steve was released from the Rams I did offer him a spot here to coach, if he needed one. A place to land, with open arms. My feeling was if you can have two great coaches on defense, That’s even better than just having Juan himself. That’s about how far as it went there. We didn’t talk about titles or anything else.

On the turnover problem last season:

On the offensive side, we need to make sure we take care of business with the turnovers. We had five games that we lost in the 4th quarter which is something that I wanted to focus on in the last few weeks. We’re better than that. We need to make sure we dig in on that. I thought we made progress as the season went on.

Instead of “time’s yours”:

With that I’m going to leave the time to you.

On Jeff Lurie’s assessment of the season:

I do know 8 and 8′s not good enough. What he said I agree with. There’s no different feeling on this end. As coaches and players, we’re sitting here watching, and we don’t like to watch. It’s that simple. Even though we finished strong and hot and all that stuff it’s not good enough. And every season as I’ve told you in the National Football League is different, and it wasn’t good enough.

On whether he was ever going to move on from Juan Castillo:

I never really was at that point. I just stepped back and kind of evaluated that whole situation. It never really came down to that. That didn’t even work into the equation. Juan was going to be there. As you know in this league titles are thrown all over the place. My feeling with Spags was that both those two together could be dynamite.

On how the defense developed:

I saw progress. I liked the schemed we were teaching them. I liked the way we were executing the schemes. You could tell the players were all in. There’s some ex-players out here and they can vouch for this. If there’s an issue and the coach doesn’t know what he’s talking about, the players will voice that opinion. The players were all in and they believed in Juan and the scheme he was doing. I think it ended up working the way we hoped it would work a little earlier and it didn’t.

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Juan Castillo will return as Defensive Coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, and Todd Bowles will be the new secondary coach, a league source confirms to 94 WIP’s Howard Eskin. The Eagles and Bowles are still working on specifics of the deal, which are formalities.

Bowles was defensive backs coach for the Miami Dolphis last year, and has coached in that capacity for college and NFL teams since 1997.

Castillo’s hiring by the Eagles last year was controversial and surprising, as Castillo was previously the team’s offensive line coach. Castillo hadn’t coached defense since he did so for a high school team in 1989. His first year on the job was uneven, with a rough start and a strong finish.

There were rumors that the Eagles were looking to hire Steve Spagnuolo for Castillo’s position, but those died with his decision to take that same position with the New Orleans Saints. Spganuolo was previously an assistant under former Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson.

If you’re looking for positives in the Eagles’ retaining of Castillo, you would look to the strong finish the Eagles defense had this year, as well as some continuity the Eagles defense has lacked since the death of Jim Johnson.

So how do you feel about the Bowles hiring and the Eagles retaining Juan Castillo?

UPDATE: The Eagles have officially hired Bowles. Andy Reid will hold a press conference at noon on Tuesday to discuss the hiring.

By Al Novack

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek was one of five people in a car involved in a DUI crash early Thursday morning.

Accident investigators say a 2012 Audi was on the southbound ramp from I-95 to Packer Avenue at about 2:25 a.m. when the driver slammed into the concrete barrier. Authorities say the car was speeding, which caused it to spin out of control and into the concrete barrier.

Celek was a back seat passenger. No one was hurt.

The driver was identified by state police as 35-year-old Shawn Glynn of Philadelphia. He was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities say none of the passengers have been charged.

The Eagles released an official statement on Thursday:

“The team is aware of the accident and has been in contact with Brent. Thankfully, no one involved in the accident was injured and, to our knowledge, Brent is not facing any legal charges.”

And Celek also released a statement via an Eagles spokesman on Thursday:

“As far as the events of last night are concerned, the bottom line is I showed extremely poor judgment. I did not know that the person driving the car was over the legal limit, but that’s not an excuse. I put my life in danger and was in a vehicle that put other people’s lives in danger, and that’s just not the way I operate. It will not happen again.”

Brent Celek turned 27 on Wednesday. He caught 62 passes for the Eagles last season, including five touchdown catches.

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – While most of Philadelphia was hoping that Steve Spagnuolo would be the new Eagles Defensive Coordinator, Andy Reid wasn’t really considering it, Garry Cobb says.

Cobb, former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker and current 94 WIP host, told Angelo Cataldi and The Morning Team that Andy Reid definitely could have tried harder to hire Spagnuolo. “It doesn’t look like there was a lot of effort in bringing him in,” Cobb said. “With the relationship Andy Reid has with him, he could have at least come into town to interview him.” Spagnuolo was hired by the Saints last week as the New Orleans Defensive Coodinator.

Cobb doesn’t think Reid would bring in Spagnuolo just to appease fans, and isn’t concerned with the fact that he hasn’t spoken publicly in almost a month. “That’s something that Andy does give as much wake to as he should,” Cobb said about Reid’s concern with public relations.

So who will be the man controlling the Eagles defense next year? Well, that’s easy Cobb said, “We already know who the Defensive Coordinator is going to be, Juan Castillo.”

by Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – “A peacefulness follows any decision, even the wrong one.” – Rita Mae Brown

As an Eagles fan, NFL Championship Weekend ended pretty much as poorly as we could have imagined. The only thing worse would have been the NFL changing the rules, and somehow allowing the Cowboys to play the Giants in the Super Bowl. A great day of football ended with a stake through my heart. Two of them, in fact.

We were left with the Giants and the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. It kind of makes me sick to my stomach to type. King Solomon would have been without words when presented with this kind of a choice.

It left me, as an Eagles fan, with a question that I know many people in the area are also facing; who should I root for?

I’ve heard a lot of folks saying they’re not even going to watch. I don’t believe it. I don’t care who’s in the Super Bowl, it’s the last football game of the year and I’m watching it. I’ve got to wait six months to see another game, so I’m not cheating myself.

I’ve also seen some nonsense that goes something like, “I’m just watching for the commercials.” For one, the commercials haven’t been good in about ten years. As well, I can’t watch a game and not root for someone. If I’m up late watching the Utah Jazz vs. the Memphis Grizzlies, I’ll find a way to root for someone (just FYI it’d be Memphis because of former Sixer Marreese Speights).

I’ve thought long and hard about it, and I’m doing something I may one day regret. In the ultimate match the of lesser of two evils, in this case, the lesser of the of the two most evils. I’m going to cheer for the New York Giants on February 5th. May the football gods have mercy on my soul.

I know they’re a division rival. I know it’s New York. I know it all, and I hate them just like you. But there is some reasoning behind this all. Here’s why:

Giants fans are going to be incorrigible no matter what. It doesn’t matter if they win this game or don’t win this game, they’re always going to scream at us about their rings from decades ago. Does it really sound any different if they say how many rings it is? Think about what it sounds like when Yankees fans do that. It all kind of sounds the same.

Giants fans didn’t really expect to be here, and won’t be crushed if they lose. If the Patriots go in and win it 53-3, Giants fans will still tell us “nice Dream Team, how’d you guys do in the playoffs?” And they’ll be right. One of the ways I’m going to feel better about all of this is if I see a group of fans more crushed than I am.

Patriots fans, Boston fans in general are the worst. 100% worse than any other fan on the planet. They’re smug, they’re arrogant, and they’re every other word you can find in the thesaurus that means the same thing. They expect to win, which makes winning a lot less fun. A loss to the Giants in this Super Bowl would obliterate them. It would leave them crying in their beer, still unable to pronounce words like “Harvard,” “yard,” “car,” and “Nomar.” They need revenge from their loss to the Giants four years ago, and I don’t want them to have it.

Bill Belichick and that hoodie, and Tom Brady and his Uggs, will bother me more than Tom Coughlin’s red face and Eli Manning’s “deer in the headlights” glare ever will.

There are also NFC pride, NFC East pride, and the “we beat the Giants this year so we can still hold out hope for next year” bits. I don’t wholeheartedly buy into these, but it’s something, and it’s more than I can say about the Patriots.

This was not an easy decision, and I’m not particularly proud of it. But this my friends, is the Super Bowl. It’s football, and no one said it would be easy.

So, who ‘ya got? Let me know in the comments.

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – One of the best days of NFL football in recent memory was highlighted by four of the worst mistakes.

Kyle Williams, Billy Cundiff, and Lee Evans all cost their teams a shot at the Super Bowl. Williams fumbled two punts, the second gave the Giants the field position needed to kick the game winning field goal. Lee Evans dropped a touchdown pass that would have won the game for the Ravens, and Billy Cundiff kicked it wide left for Baltimore, shortly after the Evans drop.

All three were costly, but which one was the worst? Angelo Cataldi and The Morning Team talked to Ray Didinger about the games and the gaffes this morning on 94WIP. They also spoke about Eli Manning’s clutch performance.

“It’s just such a fundamental and unforgivable mistake,” Didinger said of Williams first of two flubbed punts, “those two special teams mistakes are ten points and the difference in the game.”

LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW:

Angelo mentioned this morning that mistakes like these would cause a city-wide meltdown in Philadelphia. What do you think? How would Eagles fans have handled this?

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Well, it looks like Juan Castillo might get a second chance to get the Eagles defense to perform up to expectations.

94 WIP’s Anthony Gargano is reporting that Steve Spagnuolo, former Eagles assistant under Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson, will not return to the Eagles and instead will head to New Orleans to be Defensive Coordinator for the Saints.

Rumors swirled after the Eagles season ended that Spagnuolo might return to Philadelphia. When Spagnuolo was officially let go from his job as St. Louis Rams Head Coach, the rumors grew stronger.

This may open the door to retain current Defensive Coordinator Juan Castillo, whose team’s shaky start gave way to an Eagles defense that was much better during the second half of the season.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Donovan McNabb hasn’t played for the Eagles for two years, neither has Jeremiah Trotter. Terrell Owens hasn’t played for the Eagles for five years, and didn’t play in the NFL at all this season. Yet somehow, in Philadelphia, we’re talking about all of them still.

In the latest issue of GQ magazine, Terrell Owens spoke about his very public feud with Donovan McNabb during his career with the Eagles, and an apology that he never made.

GQ: How about the decision not to publicly apologize to McNabb for suggesting in an interview immediately after the Eagles lost the Super Bowl that the quarterback had “got tired” on the field? For a moment, he is silent. Could he actually be on the verge of admitting he made an error?

Owens: “Well, I probably should have done…,” he begins, rubbing his hand along the contours of his massive shaved dome. Then he stops himself. “No. No. Listen, I was in the locker room before the press conference, and my team captain, Jeremiah Trotter, read through that apology they wrote for me. He got to the bottom part, the part where it had the stuff about Donovan, and he did this.” Owens snatches a piece of paper from the table and rips off the bottom three inches. “This is the team leader we’re talking about; he told me not to do it.”

Trotter’s Twitter account suggests that Jeremiah doesn’t remember it quite going that way.

@JTrotter_54: <s>@</s>terrellowens yo man y u lying to GQ Mag I never told u that call me ASAP!!!!!

@JTrotter_54: <s>@</s>terrellowens <s>@</s>roadkarma what u said in GQ Mag. Thats a lie U got my # call me dude!!!!!!

Even though they don’t agree on what happened, it appears as if Trotter’s not going to hold a grudge.

@JTrotter_54:<s> @</s>terrellowens despite your recollection and my recollection r different I still love u man!!!!

Good to know there’s still some love there.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Eagles fans appear to have mixed feelings about Jeffrey Lurie’s decision to keep coach Andy Reid around for at least another year.

There was little surprise among the small crowd of fans watching Jeffrey Lurie on the big screen at Chickie’s and Pete’s, but there was a good deal of disappointment.

“To have a team with this much talent and not get them together to me is a big fault as far as the coach is concerned. And for him to keep him for next year is unbelievable.”

“Twelve years in the same job. Rest of the team knows how he goes about coaching. He doesn’t change anything. Everything’s still the same. Clearly this is not what you were hoping for. That’s correct.”

But Andy Reid still has his supporters.

“Andy Reid’s been there. He’s doing a great job and good for him. I hope he stays for awhile.”

“I don’t mind seeing Reid for one more year. But after that, if doesn’t do it next year it’s time to go”

Lurie made the announcement only days after his franchise finished a disappointing 8-8.

By Joseph Santoliquito

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — There was an undercurrent of excitement, mixed in with some pessimism and anxiety surrounding Eagles’ owner Jeff Lurie’s State of the Eagles postseason address at the NovaCare Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Speculation ran rampant as to what Lurie might say, covering everything from the future of Eagles’ head coach Andy Reid, to the status of defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, to nothing more of the same yadda-yadda fest of superfluous we-have-to-do-a-better-job shtick.

There were certainly plenty of things to discus about this disappointing 8-8 season. Like the five blown fourth-quarter leads, and the four blown fourth-quarter leads at home that established a new dubious NFL mark. There were the NFL-high 38 turnovers, and the positive way the Eagles closed the season, winning four straight against four non-playoff teams (Miami, New York Jets, Dallas and Washington).

There was the risky move Reid made by giving Castillo the defensive coordinator position, since Castillo last coached defense back in high school.

But a smiling Lurie walked behind the podium and spoke very candidly and terribly open about his own disappointment in Reid and his team this season, opening by saying, “This season was without question the most disappointing season since I’ve owned the team,” the Eagles’ owner said. ”You’re only human and you go through all the range of emotions during the season, but the primary emotions I think are anger and frustration.

“You think you have – you’re coming off an NFC East championship last year, [playoffs] the year before, going to the NFC Championship Game the year before, so you’re not in any way thinking that if you’re aggressive in free agency, make a trade for a Pro Bowl cornerback, continue to implement and improve the team with good, young players, and [QB] Michael Vick coming off a season where he was second to Tom Brady as MVP of the league, there is no way that I don’t think anybody in this room or certainly myself that we’d be sitting here with the season already ended. It’s not only unacceptable, it’s very, very disappointing and anyone who in my mind both doesn’t feel the disappointment and anger is just not getting what we’re all about. We’re a team, and Andy [Reid] is a coach who has been in the playoffs nine out of the last 12 years, and it’s just completely unacceptable to be 8-8 and watching these other teams play starting next week. Incredibly, incredibly disappointing.”

And you got the impression that any moment, Lurie was about the drop a bomb and announce that Reid would be fired. Instead, Lurie backed his coach, 11 minutes into his address.

“Just unfathomable that we could have the record we have the first half of the season. Not only was it ludicrous to think that we were gaining ground on Green Bay and New Orleans, but we were losing ground to many other teams in the league. It was terrible. At some point I guess, we had some games that we played awfully well. You all saw what we hoped we could be. Looking back on the Dallas game in particular and looking back on a few others in the middle of the season, you just thought that maybe the team had gotten it together early enough and now the team would play ball the way we originally expected. That didn’t happen. It happened in different football games but there was no sustainment of that excellence whatsoever. Yes, the team clearly gelled and came together in the last month, but that’s too late. There are no legitimate excuses in my mind for this team to take that long to gel and come together. I think there is a lot of optimism to be gotten from that gelling, from the scheme finally working, from the players being utilized and reaching some of their potential.

“We proved we could dominate the last four games of the year against teams that aren’t that competitive. There is a lot to be said about the players coming together and the coaches keeping this together. It was impressive. To hold on to that and be completely optimistic is fool’s gold. I took a real hard look at the season, and I do it every year. This year was the most complicated of any season in memory. The differential between the expectation and the result was dramatic. So the big decision was what to do about the head coach and the coaching staff.”

And then you thought this would be it … Lurie was about to utter what many fans have been clamoring for and that’s the ouster after 13 years of Reid as head coach. But Lurie reaffirmed that Reid would be back, saying, “There was always this odd dynamic of having a practice that was terrific and daily practices that were outstanding with the motivation, focus, attention to detail, and adjustments going in. In the games, we might have the lead for two or three quarters but the consistent losing of games in the fourth quarter was bitter for me and bitter for all of us. With the coaches, you have to look at the head coach. Does he have the fire in his belly, and does he have what it takes to take a team far into the playoffs and have a shot at the Super Bowl? It’s a grueling profession as we all know, and Andy Reid not only has the love of the players and their respect, but he also has the fire in his belly to be the best.

“Attracting talent, having the energy to succeed and motivation in a huge way, having the anger to move forward – do our players and coaches have that anger? You have to have the anger, motivation, dedication, the focus and the talent. My answer to all those questions is yes. That’s why I want to see our team coached by Andy Reid next year, and I can’t wait to see that team play.”

Lurie also said Castillo’s future will come down to Reid, though there has been growing speculation the Eagles would go after former St. Louis Rams’ head coach Steve Spagnuolo, a former Eagles’ assistant coach and former Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. Spagnuolo would replace Castillo, and move Castillo back to the offensive line, assisting offensive line coach Howard Mudd.

Lurie made sure he positively spun his coach’s gruff, terse public persona during postgame press conferences by saying that Reid is very protective of his players, that Reid is far from arrogant and truly a very humble guy. The public Reid may come off harsh to fans and media alike, but it is an issue Lurie would like his coach to improve on in the future.

“It’s a tough media market, it’s a big market; when you can sacrifice your own popularity for your players, believe me it wins a locker room for a long, long time,” Lurie said. “And that’s what he accomplishes, but he loses his ability to communicate the way he does with all of us; he may one-on-one with you guys. But that’s what I face as the owner. I have a coach that handles press conferences and communicates with the media in a way that’s incredibly protective of his team and that creates a tremendous unselfishness on his part because he’s going to suffer in popularity, that’s the dynamic here. We all have to realize it. I think it’s one of the reasons why he’s been so successful, but it’s sometimes frustrating, and you know I can use a line of Andy’s and say Andy’s got to do a better job of that.”

Lurie confirmed team president Joe Banner will remain with the team, and Reid will continue having the final say with draft picks. To encapsule everything, it’s more status quo. And it could be for some time. Lurie seems set and there may not be any changing that, even after going 8-8 and enduring “the most disappointing season,” in the owner’s own words.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — From the moment Vince Young uttered the words “Dream Team,” the Philadelphia Eagles had to live up to that regrettable label.

They were way overhyped.

The Eagles struggled early and never recovered. A four-game winning streak at the end came too late and they finished 8-8, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2007 and just the fourth time in coach Andy Reid’s 13 seasons.

“It’s going to motivate us to work harder,” quarterback Michael Vick said Monday. “It’s very disappointing.”

After an offseason spending spree brought several accomplished players to Philadelphia and added to a roster that already featured Vick, LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson, the Eagles were the talk of the NFL. They were defending NFC East champions and seemingly on the rise.

So when Young compared his new teammates to the Miami Heat, some people scoffed but most expected the Eagles to make a serious run at the first championship since 1960. Even team president Joe Banner declared the Eagles “all-in” and called this a Super Bowl-or-bust year.

But the team quickly imploded.

“There were definitely red flags,” said defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins, who won the Super Bowl with Green Bay last season. “A lot of people see Super Bowl, or I think they let the fact that the Super Bowl is there, and so many people talk about it right away. You can hear people nowadays, they come out of the draft talking about Super Bowl and I think it kind of gets thrown around too loosely now.

“It’s obviously the ultimate goal in where you want to get to, but you have to understand that you have to work hard. It’s something that is a process and you have to take it each step at a time to get to it and I think a lot of time people just want to jump from preseason to the Super Bowl without doing what it takes in between.”

Various factors contributed to a four-game losing streak that dropped the Eagles to 1-4 and doomed them from the beginning. Vick couldn’t finish two games in September because of injuries, the offense made critical turnovers and the defense struggled mightily as new players tried to adjust to new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo’s system.

Finishing games was a problem, too. The Eagles lost five games in which they led in the fourth quarter. One play could’ve made the difference in a season where the division was mediocre. The Eagles weren’t eliminated from playoff contention until right before their next-to-last game kicked off and they ended up second behind the New York Giants (9-7).

“It will be tough to sit at home and watch the playoffs, but we have to maintain a positive outlook about what we could be and go into the offseason knowing that we can play with the best teams in the league,” wide receiver Jeremy Maclin said. “Philly is not used to not being in the playoffs. I think guys will be hungry. This offseason will be very critical for us and I think it will be good.”

It’s uncertain whether the team will make major changes. Reid was criticized heavily this season and many fans want him gone. They chanted “Fire Andy!” during a loss to New England. Reid refused to discuss his future after Sunday’s game and wasn’t available to reporters on Monday. He’s expected to return, but his coaching staff may look different.

Castillo seemed completely overmatched in his first season coaching defense after 13 years teaching the offensive linemen. Reid’s decision to promote Castillo defied logic and was intensely scrutinized throughout the year. Castillo’s defense played well during the final four games, but it came against lesser competition. The quarterbacks the Eagles beat were Matt Moore, Mark Sanchez, Stephen McGee and Rex Grossman.

“I think he did a nice job,” Reid said. “The defense played strong, and I thought he was proud of his coaches and players. They all played well and coached well.”

That’s hardly an endorsement.

Rumors already are swirling that the Eagles will hire Steve Spagnuolo to replace Castillo. Spagnuolo was fired Monday after going 10-38 as the head coach in St. Louis. He was an assistant under longtime Eagles coordinator Jim Johnson and was defensive coordinator for the New York Giants when they beat Tom Brady and the previously undefeated New England Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl.

For now, it’s just speculation. Reid isn’t talking and neither is management.

As for personnel changes, the Eagles may not be too far off. They were the only team in the league whose offense (fourth) and defense (eighth) ranked in the Top 10.

Jackson and cornerback Asante Samuel are the biggest names that may not return. Jackson heads into free agency after a tumultuous year. He held out for a new contract in training camp, was deactivated for a game for disciplinary reasons and had his production slipped.

“I think I have learned a lot about how this is a business and professionally how to come to work and not let things affect me,” Jackson said. “I can admit to certain things affecting me during the season. I just want to apologize. I could have handled things a little differently. Now, sitting here after the season is over, I can sit here and say I was able to put things behind me and fight for my teammates and this organization. I know that something good will come out of this situation. I was able to get to that and move forward. We will see how it plays out.”

Samuel was the odd man out after the Eagles acquired Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The trio didn’t mesh together. Samuel criticized management in October and likely will be gone.

Unless Reid or Castillo join him on the way out, fans won’t be happy.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It has been reported that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie will hold a press conference on Thursday….what he will discuss is not known…but on Monday, one day after the team’s season officially ended, some fans at Philadelphia’s oldest bar offered advice they would give Lurie — if they were his most trusted advisor.

At McGillins Olde Ale House the beer was flowing — and so were the opinions — many of which surrounded head coach Andy Reid.

“13 years has been long enough,” said Zach. “If I didn’t do well at my job for 13 years, I’d probably be looking for a new one. It’s time for a change. They still make the same mistakes. That’s the biggest thing. Yeah, they won four games, but they still run out of timeouts and they still can’t run a two minute drill. That’s the coach’s fault.”

“Number one…big draft pick, new quarterback, new coach,” said Steve.

“New coach, new coach…sorry new coach. It’s just time,” added Ed. “Andy has done very well for the years he has been here, but it’s just time for a change.”

Even a fan from New York shared his opinion.

“Tell him to buy the Giants!,” said Brendan.

By Joseph Santoliquito

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The grand scheme had the last game of the season on New Year’s Day against the Washington Redskins marked as a rest game, since the Eagles, by now, were supposed to have locked up either the NFC East or a playoff berth. Not playing to go 8-8. Not deactivating LeSean McCoy for next season, rather than saving him for a Super Bowl run.

That was the plan.

Unfortunately, what this season turned into was a monumental disappointment, despite the Eagles’ season-closing 34-10 victory over woeful Washington before the audible diehards at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.

Right after the game, there was substantial speculation about the future of Eagles’ head coach Andy Reid, whether he wants to come back, whether he thinks he’ll be back.

“I have no answer for you, I haven’t thought about all of that and I’m not going to start right now,” Reid responded to queries about his future. “I’ll think about it when I want to think about it. I haven’t gone there. I thought it was a heck of a game and I appreciate you asking. It was a good hard-fought NFC East game. I appreciate the way the guys battled throughout this season. I don’t want to get caught up in that. We didn’t win enough of them to keep moving on.

“We’re playing good football right now. That’s a high-and-tight thing, because we won’t be able to see against playoff teams. I think we can play anybody and win games. Right now we’re playing good football, good enough to play anybody. I think they all wanted to be in the playoffs. I think we all did, the whole organization did. Everyone has worked very hard for that, and to win a championship and so on. You have that part of it. I think the other part of that is finishing up positive, so you can utilize that and learn and grow that feeling so it comes into the following year. At the same time, you’re humbled, because you didn’t make the playoffs. This wasn’t good enough, but today it was, so we’re going to enjoy this a little bit.”

There were many positives to glean from the Eagles’ victory, like the way the defense played the second half of the season, the play of defensive tackle Derek Landri, rookie center Jason Kelce, the late-season play of tight end Brent Celek and the season-long play of McCoy, who snapped a number of franchise records and will be heading—deservedly so—to his first Pro Bowl (after posting a team-record 20 touchdowns and 17 rushing scores, joining the legendary Steve Van Buren (1945 and 1947) as the only other Eagle to ever finish the season as the league leader in touchdowns).

There were also many, many negatives to glean, too. First and foremost were the NFL-high 38 turnovers, including two on Sunday against the Redskins (29 turnovers came from the quarterback position). There were the resonating five blown fourth-quarter leads to the Falcons, 49ers, Giants, Bears and Cardinals in their eight losses. The dubious adjunct to that stain is that four came at home, establishing an NFL standard for most fourth-quarter leads lost at home in a season.

There was the erratic play of quarterback Michael Vick, who finished with 19 touchdowns and the turned the ball over 18 times. His 14 interceptions this year was a career high for picks thrown in a season.

“The majority of my interceptions came from tipped balls, and I take responsibility for that, it’s my responsibility for getting the ball up,” Vick said. “That’s never happened to me before. I’m not going to dwell on that. I don’t think our season was decided based on how many interceptions I threw.”

Vick ended his day completing 24 for 39 for 335 yards and three touchdowns, concluding this season with 18 touchdowns and throwing for 3,303 yards.

“You have to take all of the positives and take everything we did,” Vick said. “That’s the unfortunate part about this [four-game winning streak to close the season], it feels so right right now. Everybody’s gelling together right now, our team is getting closer as a unit. Everybody understands the coaches and what we’re trying to do and the philosophy. We’re talking about it, and it feels right. That’s going to be a direct carry over into next season. We’ve all talked about it as a team and we know what needs to be done. We’ll fly under the radar and definitely try to shock some people next year.”

Pounding Washington, a team the Eagles should have plowed, was a nice way to close. There was Vick’s play, and Chad Hall’s seven-yard, second-quarter touchdown, when the mighty-mite lowered his head and rammed through Redskin defenders DeAngelo Hall and Perry Riley.

Dion Lewis, playing for McCoy, showed some explosive speed and proved he could be a viable backup to Shady next season. He scored his first career NFL touchdown, rushing for 58 yards on 12 carries, including breaking off a 20-yard run.

Landri, playing for Mike Patterson, was a terror inside. He pressured Redskins’ quarterback Rex Grossman all afternoon, in his face and forcing Grossman into making more bad decisions than he usually makes. He also burrowed through the Washington front to use his considerable jumping ability to block a 36-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter.

It was all fine trimming on an 8-8 season—after going 5-1 in the NFC East. It was a rather down NFC East, won for the first time by a team that will have less than 10 victories this season.

But the NFC East champion will be heading to the playoffs. The Eagles will not.

“Next year will be totally different,” Vick vowed, “I promise.”

Bird Seeds

Andy Reid won his 136th career game, tying Hank Stram for 22nd place on the NFL’s all-time list (including playoffs)… The Eagles swept the Redskins for the seventh time under Reid …He is 27-12 against NFC East teams the second time he faces them in a season (3-0 this season) … The Eagles finished the season with a 5-1 record against NFC East opponents, their best divisional record since 2006, and the sixth time Reid has held a 5-1 record or better against divisional foes … The Eagles set team records this season with 356 first downs and 6,386 total net yards. The previous records were 332 first downs (1981) and 6,230 yards (2010). The top five net yardage totals in team history have occurred in the last six seasons … They also racked up 4,276 gross passing yards, which is the third-highest total in franchise history … Prior to this season (Jackson – 961, Maclin – 859, Celek – 811), no Eagles team had ever featured three receivers with over 800 receiving yards apiece … K Alex Henery connected on his final 16 consecutive field goal attempts, which is the third-longest streak in team history … Henery set a team record for field goal percentage (88.9%) in a single season, connecting on 24 of his 27 tries … Henery’s 118 points were the most ever by an Eagles rookie kicker, surpassing Paul McFadden’s 116 in 1984… Prior to this season, the highest field goal percentage in a season by a rookie with at least 20 attempts was 86.2% by Kris Brown (1999) and Ryan Succop (2009), according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Henery and Cowboys rookie kicker Dan Bailey (32-for-36, 88.9%) are both currently ahead of that record. Bailey plays tonight against the Giants … RB LeSean McCoy finished the season with a team record 20 touchdowns and 17 rushing scores. He can join Steve Van Buren (1945 and 1947) as the only Eagles ever to finish the season as the league leader in touchdowns … McCoy’s 120 points led the team and were the seventh-highest total in franchise history. The last non-kicker to lead the Eagles in scoring was Calvin Williams in 1993 (10 touchdowns, 60 points). In fact, this is the first Eagles team ever to have two players with 100-plus points (McCoy, Henery) … McCoy’s 1,309 yards this season were the fifth on the Eagles single-season rushing list … QB Michael Vick threw for 335 yards and a season-high three touchdowns with a quarterback rating of 104.1, marking the second time in his career that Vick has posted a rating of 100-or-better in three straight games. It was Vick’s eighth 300-yard game and his third of the year … Vick set career highs with 423 pass attempts, 253 completions and 3,303 yards in 2011. He became the second player in NFL history to have 3,000 passing and 500 rushing yards in two seasons (Randall Cunningham – 3 in a row from 1990-92) … WR DeSean Jackson became the fifth player in NFL history to eclipse 900 receiving yards in each of his first four seasons, joining Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, Bob Hayes and Joey Galloway … Jackson scored on a 62-yard touchdown reception, which was the Eagles longest of the season. 22 of Jackson’s 30 career scores have covered 30-plus yards … In eight games against the Redskins, Jackson is averaging 62.8 yards on six touchdowns (four receiving, one rushing, one punt return) … In their last four games (all wins), the Eagles defense has held opponents to 11.5 points and 265.0 total net yards per game, while allowing 18 of 61 (29.5%) third down opportunities and 1-8 on fourth down. Opponents scored just four touchdowns on their last 13 red zone possessions during that span… Over the last 11 games, the Eagles held opponents to just 17.8 points per game while forcing 19 takeaways … S Nate Allen recorded his second interception of the season. Three of his five career interceptions, and both this season, have come against the Redskins. He has had a pick in all three of his career games against Washington … DT Derek Landri blocked a 36-yard field goal attempt, the first of his career and the second by an Eagle this season … The defense held Washington without a touchdown in three red zone opportunities … WR Chad Hall caught his second-career touchdown. Both of his scores have come in season finales … WR Jeremy Maclin tallied his seventh-career 100-yard receiving game after leading the team with eight receptions and 105 yards … WR Jason Avant finished the season with a career-high 52 receptions. His reception total has increased in each of his six NFL seasons … TE Brent Celek has 2,789 career receiving yards, surpassing Keith Jackson (2,757) for the third-highest total ever by an Eagles tight end. Celek scored a touchdown in three straight games for the second time in his career… The only duo in team history that combined for more sacks than DEs Trent Cole (11) and Jason Babin (18) was Clyde Simmons (19) and Reggie White (14), who combined for 33 in 1992 … The Eagles 50 sacks this season tied for the ninth-best total in team history and the most since amassing 56 in 2002.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Eagles will play out the string on Sunday against the Washington Redskins at the Linc, and they will do so without Asante Samuel.

Head coach Andy Reid today said the cornerback has been ruled out for the game because of that hamstring injury which also sidelined him last week against the Cowboys. Samuel did not practice all week. He intercepted three passes in his fourth season in Philadelphia.

Running back LeSean McCoy is listed as questionable with an ankle injury, but Reid says he does expect his leading rusher to play in this game.

Tackle Todd Herremans (ankle) and defensive tackle Trevor Laws (knee) are both listed as probable for Washington.

The Eagles are 7-8 and eliminated from playoff contention. The Redskins will bring a 5-10 record into this one.

Mathematically speaking. It didn’t matter whether or not the Eagles beat the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at Cowboys’ Stadium.

By Joseph Santoliquito

DALLAS (CBS)— Now it’s over. Mathematically speaking. It didn’t matter whether or not the Eagles beat the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at Cowboys Stadium.

The game became feckless about halfway through the first quarter, when the New York Giants victory over the New York Jets was final, eliminating the Eagles from any chance of making their impossible four-game parlay from happening.

So window dressing was applied to what has been a miserable season of lost opportunities in the Eagles’ 20-7 victory over the Cowboys, who will be playing for something next week when they visit the New York Giants for the NFC East title and a playoff berth.

Meanwhile, the enigmatic Eagles will play for nothing. Sure, players can apply some padding to record-breaking seasons for contract time, while others will be playing for jobs. That’s all that’s left for the 2011 Birds next Sunday when they host the Washington Redskins. The Eagles can close with a four-game winning streak to finish 8-8—still yet, a game that was rendered meaningless by the Giants’ victory, giving anyone having a little too much New Year’s Eve cheer an excuse to sleep in.

The same might be said about these Eagles. Way before anything was put on the sorry, insecure shoulders of New York Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez and the hopes that he might somehow outduel the Giants’ Eli Manning, the Eagles could easily look back on the five blown fourth-quarter leads to the Falcons, 49ers, Giants, Bears and Cardinals in their eight losses as to why they’re not playing into January.

It didn’t matter Sunday because the Eagles could look at—though they will try and ignore—the dubious NFL distinction of four blown fourth-quarter leads at home that set a new NFL standard. Or a fourth-quarter defense that was among the worst in the NFL, before the Dallas game, yielding 100.6 yards per game in the fourth quarter, which ranked them 26th in the NFL.

The point is, when it mattered the Eagles placed themselves in these dire circumstances. No doubt many across the Delaware Valley were angry when the Eagles-Cowboys game interrupted the more meaningful Giants-Jets game. But the Eagles were well aware of what was happening.

“I appreciate my team’s effort,” Eagles’ coach Andy Reid said. “That’s a tough situation and a couple of lessons that can be learned, number one, don’t put it in someone else’s hands to get yourself into the playoffs; number two, they focused in on the Dallas Cowboys and that was the most important thing. You have to take care of business early. We’re coming together as a team now, but not proud of the guys doing it now. As a head coach, I have to make sure I get that part done sooner than later. Guys are playing good, aggressive football.

“I don’t know if we’re necessarily a team people want to see get in the playoffs, we’re playing that type of football. I’m going to enjoy this one for a little bit. This game means a lot to the players, as well as next week’s competition against the Washington Redskins. I think all of the guys have confidence in each other and they’re playing good football. The reality is we didn’t make the playoffs. We have one game left and the season isn’t over. We’re going to keep on playing.”

The real waste is the amazing performance of Eagles’ tailback LeSean McCoy, who left the Dallas game late in the third quarter limping off the field with an injured left ankle. McCoy was carted off the field early in the fourth quarter and later returned with 10:28 left in the game. Eagles’ safety Kurt Coleman was lost earlier with a strained biceps injury.

After three quarters against the Cowboys and Dallas back-up quarterback Stephen McGee, the Eagles had amassed 352 totals yards of offense to the Cowboys’ 151 yards. The Eagles had six plays of 20 yards or more, with 19 first downs to the Cowboys’ 10. Michael Vick played well, completing 18 of 32 passes for 293 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Vick seemed somewhat irritated that he wouldn’t be continuing after next week. But he stands by this team.

“If we got into the playoffs, we would have done some damage,” Vick said. ”We’re happy that we’re finishing strong. I’ve watched this offense and defense gel. You see a totally different football team. We’ll see what happens as this team moves forward. We had a lot of new guys and a new system; a new coach on defense [Juan Castillo] and new players. You might not believe me, because some of you guys aren’t in that locker room. But I’ve been around a lot of teams and I know what it takes to win football games. I know what type of team and what type of personality and character that you have to have. We just lacked that early. It’s the truth. I wouldn’t sit here and say something at this podium that I didn’t believe in and didn’t know. I’m just happy that we won the game today.”

Eagles’ rookie kicker Alex Henery has booted 14-straight field goals, including a season-long 51-yarder in the Dallas victory. But again, more window dressing, since it was Henery’s two missed fourth-quarter field goals could have spelled an Eagles’ victory over Arizona—and control of their own playoff chances. Meanwhile, former Eagles’ kicker David Akers set an NFL record for most field goals in one season with his 41st field goal this season playing for his new team, the playoff-bound San Francisco 49ers.

The Eagles’ defense has been very strong in three successive games, beating Miami quarterbacks Matt Moore and J.P. Losman, then squelching the erratic Sanchez last week and stifling Dallas backup Stephen McGee, replacing Cowboys’ starter Tony Romo who was pulled after the Cowboys’ first possession with a bruised right hand. The Eagles could take some solace in sweeping the Cowboys and outscoring them 54-14 this season. The last time the Eagles swept Dallas was in 2006.

Though again, it amounts to more picture-window scenery that looks good outside, but dusty and faded on the inside in what’s been a hollow season.

Birds Seeds

Andy Reid won his 135th career game, passing Weeb Ewbank for the 23rd on the NFL’s all-time list (including playoffs). He improved his career December record to 38-15 (.717) … The Eagles swept the Cowboys for the first time since 2006 … Andy Reid is 26-12 against NFC East teams the second time he faces them in a season (9-4 against the Cowboys, 2-0 this season) … The Eagles outscored the Cowboys 54-14 this season, their largest margin of victory over the Dallas since outscoring them by 55 points in 2002 … Since 1999, the Eagles are 48-3 when allowing 10 or fewer points … DE Trent Cole picked up his 10th sack of the season, and has now reached double digits in each of the last three seasons and four times in the last five … The only player with more double-digit sack seasons in an Eagles uniform was Reggie White (8 times) … The last time the Eagles defense featured two players with 10-plus sacks was in 1995 (William Fuller – 13, Andy Harmon – 11) … Only one duo in team history has combined for more sacks than Cole (10) and DE Jason Babin(18) this season. Clyde Simmons (19) and Reggie White (14) combined for 33 in 1992 … In their last three games (all wins), the Eagles defense has held opponents to 36 points, 683 total net yards, 12-45 (26.7%) on third down and 1-6 on fourth down. Their 16 sacks are their highest three-game total since also posting 16 in the first three games of the 2006 season … According to Pro Football Reference, the Eagles have shut the Cowboys out eight times in the first half of a game. This season was their first time doing so twice in the same year … The Eagles have totaled 99 points and 1,301 total net yards in three games against Rex and Rob Ryan this year, while converting 17 of 35 third downs … QB Michael Vick’sthree top performances this season have come against the Ryan-coached defenses, throwing for a combined 846 yards on 54 of 82 with five touchdowns and a 115.2 rating … The Eagles scored their third opening-drive touchdown of the season.
By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — As the Eagles departed for Texas and tomorrow’s game with the Cowboys, they announced that they will be a bit shorthanded on defense for this one.

Cornerback Asante Samuel has been ruled out with a hamstring injury that kept him out of practice. Cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is expected to take his place in the defensive backfield.

Elsewhere on the injury front, defensive tackle Trevor Laws is listed as “questionable.” He has a knee injury.

At 6-8, the Eagles are still alive for the NFC East title. In order to claim it, they need to win out, have the Jets beat the Giants tomorrow, and then have the Giants beat the Cowboys the following week.

Should the Giants win tomorrow in an early game, the Eagles are eliminated from playoff contention.

The Eagles and Cowboys will kick off at 4:15pm.

———-
