Mother’s Day in Philadelphia means an early wake up call for thousands who take part in the race. Opening events begin at 7 a.m. and the 5K race and walk got underway at 8:15 a.m.

It is expected to raise an estimated $4 million for breast cancer research and education. Part of the opening ceremonies included a parade of survivors down the art museum steps wearing pink t-shirts and caps.

Organizers for the 21st annual Susan G. Komen race for the cure say this will be the biggest race and walk ever. All the money raised stays in the Delaware valley and is used for breast cancer research and education.

The stations teamed up with sponsors Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Wawa and Quality Plus Ford Stores to present the event. Time was made available in newscasts, in commercial break time and in special Komen programming during the five hours. Contributions came from viewers by phone and from local businesses including Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Dietz and Watson, Wawa, UnitedHealthcare, Thriftway/Shop n Bag, ACME Markets, Macys and Pfizer Oncology among others.
“The Women of Eyewitness News,” the station’s year-round breast cancer awareness team — Susan Barnett, Kate Bilo, Natasha Brown, Pat Ciarrocchi, Carol Erickson, Anne-Marie Green, Kathy Orr, Stephanie Stahl, Lesley Van Arsdall and Erika von Tiehl — spearheaded the effort to raise funds for the Race joined by CBS Radio staffers KYW Newsradio Anchor Vince Hill, who lost his wife Janis to breast cancer earlier this year, Ross Brittain, Valerie Knight and Frank Lewis of the Breakfast Club at 98.1 WOGL, Chris Stigall and Dom Giordano from the new Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, Sarah, Spike and Gordon from 94 WYSP and Glen Macnow from SportsRadio 610 WIP.
The Women of Eyewitness News will host the Race on site on Mother’s Day morning along with KYW Newsradio’s Vince Hill, WYSP’s Danny Bonaduce, 98.1 WOGL’s Valerie Knight, Talk Radio 1210 WPHT’s Dom Giordano and Steve Trevelise of SportsRadio 610 WIP. CBS 3 and The CW Philly will also air live coverage of the Race 6-9 a.m. that day and stream its coverage live on www.CBSPhilly.com/cure.

“I walked in and she said I have something for you and then she said we have something further and then she handed me those tickets and I couldn’t believe, because I don’t ever win anything and to win those tickets was a dream come true,” said Monahan.

The tickets were donated by Matt Rutkowski, owner of PennyGreen Landscaping in Runnemede, who has made it a tradition to give away his playoff tickets.

“It’s a good feeling,” said Rutkowski. “There’s so many things going on today to be able to sit back and have that to think about can get you through some bad days.”

And he has a pair of World Series tickets to give away.

For the second straight day 2,200 women and even some men are getting ready for Philadelphia Susan G. Komen 3-day for the Cure. It’s another chance to show the community how many lives are affected by breast cancer each and every day.

Yesterday’s emotional opening ceremony at Willow Grove gave walkers a chance to reflect on their personal journey’s with breast cancer and remember the many lives that have been lost because of the deadly disease.

CBS 3 is a proud supporter of the event and joined participants in Mt.Airy on Friday. As this army of pink hits the pavement again today, they know the battle to cure breast cancer, can’t be won without a fight to the finish.

“It’s amazing,” said walker Reilly Weston. “I never felt so supported and so loved by so many complete strangers.

This is the Komen Philadelphia 3-Day For The Cure, sixty miles that started in Willow Grove and will end Sunday at the Navy Yard. For some of the 2200 walkers, it’s part of the journey of breast cancer.

“I’m walking because I’m a survivor. I was diagnosed in 2008, and I wanted to experience this,” said Denise Johnson.

CBS 3 is a 3-day sponsor, and we caught up with the women of Eyewitness News in Mount Airy. Natasha, Erika, and Anne-Marie along with our producer Cathy Molique walked side by side with women who are celebrating survivorship and sisterhood.

Lunch on a hillside along Germantown Avenue was a welcome break after the first ten miles. Pink gear from head to toe signaled the inspiration carried by families.

“It’s amazing. You see them, especially at the end of the day, they’re limping, they’ve got bandages. It’s amazing what they do, and we’re all out here to find a cure for breast cancer,” said Godfrey.

Many of the women walk in teams. Christina Posencheg is part of Busted Lion.

“We are walking for friends, sisters, mothers, mothers-in-law. We’re the No. 7 fundraising team and raised over $36,000,” Posencheg said.
