Dick's Sporting Goods Will Stop Selling Assault-Style Rifles

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) -- Dick's Sporting Goods is taking action in the wake of the deadly Florida school shooting.

The company unveiled new policy changes on Wednesday that ends sales of assault-style weapons and bans certain gun buyers.

"We were so disturbed and saddened by what happened in Parkland, we said we had to do something," said CEO Edward Stack.

Stack announced three big changes: all company stores, including field and stream locations will stop the sale of assault-style rifles permanently; all gun purchasers must be 21 years of age or older regardless of state law; and large capacity magazines will no longer be sold.

Laura Wehrun of Medford says she's glad the company made the changes, which is the reason she stepped foot inside the Cherry Hill location today.

"It's the only reason we came out here. We got the little guy a new ball, and a couple other things just to support the business," she said.

However, Second Amendment rights activists describe the move as insincere and overreaching.

"Dick's Sporting Goods, in my opinion, is doing this to ride a wave," said Maj Toure, founder of Black Guns Matter. "To say you're going to come into a state, do business and not respect those states' laws is foolish."

Toure says this move will just send business to other companies.

"We're going to choose to do our business at Cabela's or some other organization," said Toure.

Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School returned to class for the first time today after 17 people were killed two weeks ago.
