Police: 2-Year-Old Dies After Accidentally Shooting Himself In Head

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- New details are emerging in the death of a 2-year-old boy who was shot in the head in the Olney section of Philadelphia on Thursday.

Police say 2-year-old Ibn-Kareem Lawson accidentally shot himself in the basement of the home on the 200 block of West Godfrey Avenue.

His father rushed him to the hospital, where the toddler was pronounced dead.

Investigators are calling the death accidental, but they're working to get more information.

According to police, the gun was in a basement in a closet. Police found the gun in a trash can outside of the home on Thursday night and discovered that it was a stolen gun.

"The gun was found last night after processing the crime in the trash container just outside the residence," said Philadelphia Homicide Captain John Ryan.

Authorities know someone moved the gun from inside the home and now believe they did so because it wasn't a legal registered firearm.

Police say the gun was reported stolen out of Cheltanham in 2015.

Police say several adults were inside the home at the time of the shooting.

No charges have been filed in this case in part because police say no one in the home has fessed up as to who brought the gun there.

Authorities have sent the gun to a forensics lab, to determine who had possession of it.
