Police: Tractor-Trailer Operator Charged With DUI After I-295 Crash In New Castle

NEW CASTLE, DE (CBS) -- Delaware State Police say a tractor-trailer driver has been charged with DUI after a fiery crash shut down parts of I-295 early Sunday morning.

Officials say the crash occurred around 2:38 a.m. Sunday as Jeffery B. Mosier, 55 of Pageland, South Carolina, was operating a tractor-trailer carrying construction equipment, was merging onto I-295 northbound from northbound on I-95.

Police say that for unknown reasons, the tractor-trailer struck a construction impact attenuator that was centered between the I-95 and I-295 split before overturning and catching fire.

Mosier was outside of the vehicle after it overturned and was transported from the scene by EMS to Christiana Medical Center, according to police.

Officials said upon Mosier's arrival at the hospital, a DUI investigation was conducted by troopers.

After being treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries, troopers took Mosier into custody.

Mosier was charged with his 4th Offense Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Refused Breath/Blood Test While Operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle, and Failure to Remain within a Single Lane.

Police said Mosier has three previous convictions for DUI that range from 2010 to 2014.

State Police went on to say that the tractor and trailer was completely destroyed as a result of the fire make them non-identifiable.

The crash caused a large brush fire and parts of the structure of Basin Road (SR141) overpass to also catch fire.

Police say the area of the I-295 crash was closed for approximately seven hours.
