Police: Murder Suspect Takes Own Life In 12-Hour Standoff With Officers

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)— A standoff between police and a murder suspect in Germantown came to an end early Wednesday morning after 12 hours when the suspect took his own life.

The incident began around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the 1300 block of East Haines Street. Police surrounded a home on the block where they say the armed suspect was inside.

Police say he fired three shots at officers.

Police say the man is connected to a fatal shooting that occurred around 1:13 p.m. on 1200 block of Sanger Street. A 25-year-old woman died after being shot multiple times.

Detectives said the suspect is immediately identified as someone she knew.

Police spokesman Sekou Kinebrew says the suspect fired at officers multiple times during the seven-hour standoff.

"At least one round fired from the suspect from the roof, and then from the front of the house, and then after we last spoke from the back of the house," said Kinebrew.

Kinebrew says around 1:30 a.m. officers heard a muffled gunshot come from inside the home. Fearing someone else may have been inside and that they may been injured, officers made their way into the home.

They say the suspect shot himself in the head.

No one else was injured.
