Millennials vs. Gen X: Which Group Has The Competitive Edge In Life?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- This season of Survivor featured millennials (roughly ages 19-35) versus generation x (between 36-51), with a younger contestant coming out on top.

But, in the game of life, which group has the competitive edge?

"Oh God, I would say millennials," said Bridget Pinto of South Philadelphia. Her husband, Rob Pinto said, "I'll go generation x for a little more life experience."

Karin Lovolluo of Lafayette Hill added, "I think the boomers won. They took everything. Nothing left for us."

Both groups battle stereotypes, with 'gen x' often accused of being cynical and set in their ways and millennials? "Very lazy," said Pamela Fletcher of New Jersey.

"Special snowflakes," added Brooke Rogers of Abington.

Statistics do show differences, with millennials placing less value on marriage and children than the older set.

Research also shows a dissimilar approach at work. With an average 2-year tenure, many believe millennials have a sense of entitlement.

"When they (millennials) entered the workforce, gen x said 'Hang on, you don't deserve an award for being here. You have to work hard like we did,' explained Halden Ingwersen, a human resources expert, who has written about generational differences in the workplace.

She says millennials crave constant feedback, while generation x wants to feel valued. So, their differences are actually quite complimentary.

"If you take gen x and allow them to use their experience as a mentor, the millennials they work with are going to perform so much better because of that."

And in that case, everybody wins.
