Police K9 Tracks Car Theft Suspect After Shoe Is Left Behind

ABSECON, N.J. (CBS)—Police in South Jersey have nabbed a car theft suspect after he left his shoe behind before fleeing into the woods.

Absecon Police responded around 3 a.m. last Friday when a nearby resident saw a man breaking into a neighbor's car.

When the resident went to confront the suspect he apparently ran into the woods, but left his shoe behind.

Police say quick sniffing by their K9 Dozer led them right to the suspect, who police identify as Erik.

Maybe the shoe was also smelly, too.

"With roughly 40x the sniffing power of a human, you can imagine the scent Dozer was able to sniff into his snout from that sole shoe, polcie said in a release on Facebook. "We can say it wasn't the stiff December breeze causing Dozer's eyes to water. In fact the more I think of it, the more I think Dozer actually had a pretty bad night. Let's keep Dozer in our thoughts tonight as his sniffer recovers."

Police say they recovered various stolen items.

Anyone looking to retrieve items or have further information is asked to call 609-641-0667.
