Philly Elementary School Gets Piano Lab Thanks To Grant From Famous Musician

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Music is beginning to flow from a Philadelphia elementary school, courtesy of a famous name.

The kids at Fox Chase Elementary School don't sound like Lang Lang yet. But they may someday, thanks to a $180,000 grant from the Lang Lang Foundation. The grant has provided a piano lab with 34 connected digital keyboards, says Fox Chase principal Rob Caroselli.

"All the kids are wearing headphones, so it's absolutely silent when you walk into the room which is kind of eerie," Caroselli said. "But it's pretty cool. And the teacher can control who she listens to, and through microphones she can talk to just certain kids or she can talk to the entire class."

Caroselli says the grant has taken a skeletal music program to one that kids are eager to join.

"The kids are really engaged with it," he said. "They love it -- all diverse learners are all engaged in it and everyone wants to play."

The Southwark and Steel schools also got the grants.

Fox Chase officially cuts the ribbon on its piano lab Thursday.
