By Daniella Diaz
PHILADELPHIA (CNN) -- President-elect Donald Trump spoke with the President of Taiwan on Friday, according to a statement from his transition team, a move that could trigger a diplomatic disagreement with China, which claims the island as part of its own country.
"President-elect Trump spoke with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, who offered her congratulations. During the discussion, they noted the close economic, political, and security ties exists between Taiwan and the United States. President-elect Trump also congratulated President Tsai on becoming President of Taiwan earlier this year."

The call breaks decades of US policy toward China and Taiwan. It could be viewed by China as a serious shift from the so-called "One China" policy, which has been in place since the late 1970s.
