Out Of Service SEPTA Regional Rail Cars Returning Soon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Nearly three dozen of SEPTA's Silverliner V regional rail cars are still out of service, but the transit agency says they'll be back on the rails by the end of the month.

SEPTA Director of Media Relations Carla Showell-Lee says their absence isn't affecting service:

"We've been running back to normal since the early fall."

She says the cars still out of service are being fitted with forged beams, which take longer to make than the pin foot beams used on the other 87 cars:

"SEPTA had already said they were going to go with the forged beam, because it's a long life, it's easier to inspect, and there's less parts involved, so even though the pin beam was fast, and it was safe, we're still going with the plan to have all of our cars outfitted with the forged beams."

But Showell-Lee adds that process will take place one or two cars at a time:

"I don't feel as though our customers are even going to notice a difference."
