Thanksgiving Travelers Head Home After Holiday Weekend

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A lot of Thanksgiving travelers were hitting the roads, rails and the skies on Sunday as they headed home from the long holiday weekend.

AAA Mid-Atlantic estimated some 50,000 Philadelphia-area residents would be flying for the Thanksgiving holiday. The lines at Philadelphia International Airport were moving along at a good clip for early morning travelers passing through security for Terminals D and E.

But airport officials say this is their busiest day of the year, and TSA spokesman Michael McCarthy says it's important for travelers to arrive at the airport early.

"Two hours will leave you plenty of time to get through quickly and easily, and get to your gate," he said.

A lot of folks were heading home or back to school. For Molly from Flemington, New Jersey, it's a return to Michigan State after a solid Thanksgiving weekend.

"It was great, a little hectic," she said, "but it's always good to come back home from college and spend some time with family."

And the perfect time to recharge.

"I'm kind of pretending like I have no school work to do or no finals to come back to," Molly said.

But she had complaints about her travels and says she's looking forward to doing it all over again. Next time it will be back home for Christmas.

Travelers are encouraged to check the status of their flights via the airport's website.
