Gunman Wounded In Shootout With Police In Kensington

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police say a shooting involving officers in Kensington ended with a suspect and an innocent bystander wounded.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when police say they spotted a man tucking a gun into his waistband in the 1900 block of Clementine Street.

Authorities say when officers approached the man, he took off on foot and a chase ensued.

Police say at some point during the pursuit the man pulled a handgun, turned and began firing at the officers.

Police say the officers returned fire but the suspect continued to run.

Authorities say the chase ended when officers caught up with the gunman in the 2900 block of Amber Street.

"I believe it was five officers that engaged the male, discharging their weapons, striking the male multiple times in the torso area of the body, as well as the legs," said Lieutenant John Stanford.

The gunman, 33, was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition.

Police say a woman who was caught in the exchange of gunfire suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. She was taken to Hahnemann Hospital where she was treated and released.

The shooting is under investigation.
