Police: 4yo Accidentally Shoots 2yo Cousin In North Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Authorities say a two-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was shot by his cousin in Kensington.

This happened around 4:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day inside a home in the 3500 block of North 9th Street.

According to police, the boy and his four-year-old cousin were playing with a gun in the living room when his cousin accidentally shot him.

Chief Inspector Scott Small tells CBS 3 Eyewitness News the bullet went through the little boys hand and into his torso. The boy was taken by police to the hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Authorities say the boy's mother and her boyfriend were both home when this happened.

"Our main concern, of course, is for the two-year-old," Small says, "but also we want to know how this four-year-old was able to get a hold of this gun that was loaded."

Authorities say the four-year-old has been taken into protective custody.

"I don't think the four-year-old realizes what happened," adds Small.

Police say a preliminary investigation reveals the gun belongs to the two-year-old's mother. There's no word yet on any charges.
