Historic Bellmawr Building May Be Moved To Spare It From Demolition
BELLMAWR, NJ (CBS) -- A structure in Bellmawr that dates back to the Revolutionary War could be spared from demolition, if the town's mayor gets his way.
The Hugg-Harrison-Glover house, and its future, has delayed work on revamping the 295-42 intersection. The "Direct Connection" project might get back on track with word from Bellmawr Mayor Frank Filipek that he has a place to relocate the building some five blocks away from its current site in back of a cemetery.
"There is a property that the Board of Education gave to us behind our street hockey rink that would be a perfect place," Filipek told KYW Newsradio.
Two issues now stand in the way.
"The key thing right now is the D-O-T to agree to work with us and some way for us to find the money," he added.
Moving the structure would cost about 400 thousand dollars. Camden County's been asked for a $50,000 grant. Private fundraising might come up with the rest.
The Department of Transportation has yet to receive written specifics on Filipek's plan but insists there is not now, nor has there ever been a deadline to tear the place down.
