Delco Firefighters Help Deliver Baby Who Just Couldn't Wait

MIDDLETOWN, PA – It wasn't where most moms would want to have a baby, but there could be worst places.

Saturday evening, Isaias Santillan was driving his wife Autumn to the hospital to deliver their third child when they had no choice but to stop at the Middletown Fire Company.

As firefighters responded to Isaias banging on the fire house door they ran outside to see that labor was well underway.

"By the time I got gloves out of the truck the head was already delivered so there wasn't any time to wait," says J.P. Mensack, the firefighter and EMT who delivered the baby. As Mensack knelt down in the doorway to catch baby girl Inarah the rest of the squad surrounded them with blankets to block the cold 20 mph wind.

"The mom stated this wasn't the place she wanted to deliver and we said this isn't the place either," says Lt Eric Mellon.

In less than 5 minutes it was all over and paramedics took the Santillans to Riddle Hospital.

"She looked great, especially for as cold as it was she was great," says Eugene Smith, deputy chief of Riddle Hospital Paramedics.

The firefighters who never even got the Santillan's names in all the excitement hope to meet little Inarah once the family is settled.
